Sugar Control Diet – Week #10

Bob SleepingWeek #10

Weight Lost This Week: 0 lbs

Total Weight Loss: 14 lbs

Mood: Exhausted

Well, I did it. I made it through the Easter season without being tempted to buy a bag of jelly beans. Typically I’ll buy at least one bag of the SweeTarts and one bag of Starburst jelly beans. I managed to resist, though, which is saying a lot! Super-concentrated sugar like that is my downfall. I don’t have the will power to be able to only eat a few at a time; once I get going I can’t stop!

This week I was tempted to pop a few pieces of candy into my mouth, but I managed to somehow resist the urge. I do have candy in my house, and I know right where it is, but I have been able to behave myself. I honestly don’t know how I’m managing to do that. I keep having thoughts of jelly beans and pasta and gluten free pizza running through my head. Even though I’m allowed to start adding a little bit back in I haven’t been brave enough to start on the pasta or bread. I’m afraid that once they hit my tongue that it will be all over and I’ll gain back every pound that I’ve lost.

Speaking of the weight loss, I definitely have noticed it. It’s just a bit discouraging that I’ve been on this diet for ten weeks and am only averaging about a pound a week. I know that’s a healthy amount of weight to lose and it will be easier to maintain, but I was really hoping to have averaged about 2-3 pounds a week.

There’s not much else to report this week. It was busy so I feel like I’m still trying to rest from everything that was going on. I love the fact that spring has finally decided to peek its head in, but now comes allergy season and all of the sinus issues attributed to that. Can I survive my sugar control diet while being grumpy due to stuffy sinuses??

Winter Cross Update 3-30-15

Winter Cross 3-8-15Backstitching isn’t my most favorite part of stitching. My favorite part is the middle where you can see a lot of progress, but you know that you still have quite a bit left to do.

So when I realized that I had to start backstitching the leaves on this cross… I found other things to do. Then I decided that I had to make myself sit down and work on it. If I didn’t, then it would forever stay at this stage. We can’t let that happen!

Winter Cross 3-30-153-30-15…

You can’t really tell in this picture, but I’ve completely outlined the bottom poinsettia, and most of the right hand side of the cross. I am currently working my way around the bottom. The silly thing is that once I really started on this I loved seeing the leaves start to pop out, so then it was like I couldn’t stop! I guess that I’m just never happy!

Sugar Control Diet – Week #9

Food Fail 3-30-15Week #9

Mood: Stressed!

Weight Loss Week #9 – 3 pounds!

Total Weight Lost – 14 pounds!

Mood Update: Still stressed, but with a smile!

Mmmm… doesn’t that look yummy? No?! Are you sure?! Yeah… this was my fail this week. Usually I like to show pictures of things that I can take pride in displaying. This week I decided to show you that even I have some food flops. Big ones. I believe that I mentioned last week that I had a food epiphany regarding black licorice flavored gummies. On Saturday I had some time so I thought that I would do some creating in the kitchen. Except, I misplaced the recipe that I was going to try. Since I couldn’t find that I decided to try a different recipe for Paleo Egg-not Pudding. It had a simple list of ingredients (all of which I already had) and it didn’t seem too complicated. Yup. Riiiiiiight….

I will give this another try at some point, but not right away. I’ve been doing a lot of reading about how good for you gelatin is and how we don’t get enough of it in our diet. I gathered a bunch of recipes, most of which require the use of a blender and lots of boiling down of berries, and now I will have a terrific excuse for needing to chew on my gummy treats. Once I attempt to make them. It might be a while before I try that again, though.

I’m very happy with my weight loss this week! When I stepped on the scale I had to stare at the dial for a minute to make sure that I was reading it correctly. It was very early (I try to hop on it when I get up before I feed the cats), and I wasn’t sure that I was completely awake. I even half-stepped off the scale to make sure that I was seeing the correct number. I was! It hadn’t gone up like I had expected.

This week I must confess that I had to taste a little of the carrot cake cupcakes that I made last weekend. I shared half of one with Jay and it was delicious! Except, about a half hour later it felt like a rock in my stomach. I could hear my stomach poking at it and saying, “What kind of junk are you dumping in here??!! I just got this area all cleaned up and then you bring something like THIS in?!” I didn’t have any more after that, but that was mainly because I made my mother-in-law take the rest of them to work with her. lol

The other reason why I was surprised to have lost weight is because this was a VERY stressful week. By the time that I got home from work on Thursday I’d had enough. I burst into tears and I could feel that all of my muscles were tense and on edge. It took a while, but I eventually calmed down that night. Luckily I have a husband who lets me rage on and on until I have exhausted myself. Usually he’s just happy that he’s not the reason for my rage!

So, that’s how this past week went. I don’t really have any goals for this week. It’s Holy Week so I’m not going to have a whole lot of chance to cook or prepare many meals. There will be more stress, too, but hopefully without any break downs!

Dresses for Missions Update 3-26-15

In our church bulletin a few weeks ago there was an update on our Dresses for Missions group. Apparently so far we have managed to send 1500 dresses to Haiti! That is a lot in just over a year. Keep in mind, though, that most of those are not dressed up and decorated like the dresses that I make. In order to clothe more little girls the rest of the ladies get together and sew a whole bunch at one time. Once they have sewn the binding on, hemmed it and added ties a dress is considered finished. When I’m making one, a dress at that stage is considered a blank slate!

Dresses Choosing FabricI thought you might be interested to see the process that I go through when making a dress.

The first thing that I do is sit in front of my shelf and decide which fabric I want to use. Which one is calling to me? Which fabric do I already know that I want to use with a particular trim?

There are times when I know what fabric I want to use, but I have no idea how I want to trim the dress. So I lay out the fabric and play with the laces and ribbon.

Dresses Option 1I automatically know that I’m going to make a ruffle to put at the bottom of the dress. Typically I cut the fabric to a 6″ width so that once I’ve hemmed it and attached the ruffle to the dress there is actually about a 5″ ruffle at the bottom.

So I look to see what lace do I want to add to the bottom. What ribbon would look good to cover up the seam where the ruffle is attached to the dress? How about a pretty piece of lace to dress up the top. And then I have to figure out what color binding I want to use for the arm holes and ties.

Dresses Option 2Do I go for a wild look or a soft look? Will a tom-boyish girl prefer this or will a girl who loves to get dressed up to the nines prefer the look?

Dresses Option 3Perhaps I should go a completely different way and not put lace at the bottom of the ruffle, but instead dress it up at the top of the ruffle.

Dresses Option 4Do I go for bold? Subtle? In-your-face? Just a bit of an accent?

Honestly, it all depends upon my mood for the day and what is calling to me. You might remember this fabric from a dress that I posted a few weeks ago. It works for this post, though so that I can show you how I love to use the same fabric, but get sort of two different looks out of it.

Dresses for Missions #17 1-12-15This was Dress #17 that I posted at the beginning of January. This one has the same kind of style as the very last option that I posted above. Very bright and fun.

Dresses for Missions - 23 3-20-15Dress #23

This is what resulted from the session up above. It’s slightly more girly and soft, even though you have the punch of bright green lace at the top. It dresses it up a bit more and says, “I may be demure and lady-like… but I’m fun!”

It’s not a drastic difference, but your eye is drawn to different things. The top one you pick up a lot more of the orange in the fabric because of the orange ribbon. Whereas in the bottom one you see more of the light pink that runs throughout it.

Hopefully you found it interesting to see how many different combinations of things you can come up with just using one piece of fabric and a bunch of trim.

CNC Router – Wine Glass Coasters

CNC Wine Rack 2For Christmas Jay made me a wine rack. It is beautiful and really does a great job. As we were designing it I suggested that he cut out wine glass shapes and use those as the side supports.

CNC Wine Rack 3As he was cutting out the supports he had the idea of cutting out extras and make them into coasters. I liked the idea, but then said that we needed to make a wine bottle-shaped holder for them. This led down a very busy path for both of us.

CNC Wine Coaster Holder CutoutsJay cut out the shapes and glued the bottles to their bases. He then created a jig that he can use to drill the holes to correctly position the pegs to hold the coasters (as you will see later). He also cut out more wine glasses, too.

CNC Wine Coaster BlanksApparently I am the finishing department in our enterprise, so once the CNC Router had done it’s job the blanks all came to me. I used elbow grease and some sandpaper to round out the edges and smooth any rough spots.

CNC Wine Coasters StainedNext came the staining. Here we have three different colors of stain that I’ve used for the coasters. I was asked to make four sets, but only had room for three on my work table.

CNC Wine Coaster Holder StainedI stained the holders a lighter color so that there would be some contrast.

Then each coaster and holder received five coats of gloss polyurethane. I wanted them shiny and smooth!

After the poly was dry I glued felt onto the back of the coasters so that if somebody placed them on a piece of furniture the coaster wouldn’t leave any marks.

CNC Wine Coaster Set 3My thought is this: There are some people who want to protect their furniture so they request that a coaster be used all of the time, even if there’s no danger of condensation pooling at the bottom of the glass. Typically wine won’t condensate, so the poly’d coasters are perfect for this as they weren’t meant to soak up any moisture. If you happen to spill something on them they are easily wiped up.

CNC Wine Coaster SetAnd then we added pegs on the back to hold your wine glass markers. I received a set of these for Christmas and had no idea where I was going to store them. Now I have a place!

Not everybody has wine glass markers, though, so I figured that if we were going to give these away (or sell them if we can figure out a reasonable price) I should include a set of glass markers, too.

I’m not good at jewelry making, so hopefully these didn’t turn out too bad:

Wine Theme Wine Glass MarkersWe have a wine-themed set…

Leaf Wine Glass MarkersA set of leaves with rhinestones as accents…

Hearts Wine Glass MarkersA set of hearts…

Beach Theme Wine Glass MarkersA beach-themed set…

Bell Wine Glass MarkersAnd bells!

Jay’s mom wants to give a few of these to her friends as gifts, so I’ve been trying to get them all done. What do you think? Is this a marketable idea?

An update to the CNC Router – Wildlife post from a few weeks ago:

Jay’s uncle picked up the routed doors and took them home to be finished. He then sent pictures to Jay of the finished product.

CNC Router - Finished Cabinets

You have to look really close to see them, but the two ducks are the top left, the moose and elk are bottom left, the jumping deer is top right and the bear is bottom right.

CNC Router - Finished Moose

I was worried that once he stained them the grain of the oak would overshadow the routed image. Maybe you just have to look at it from a different angle. You can actually see the moose in this one.

CNC Router - Finished Ducks

And here are the ducks. The flying one is on the left with the swimming duck on the right. I hope that he was really happy with them!

Sugar Control Diet – Week #8

Carrot Cake CupcakesWeek #8

Mood: Tired with a headache

Weight Loss Week #8 – 0 pounds

Total Weight Loss – 11 pounds

*sigh* Another week without seeing the scale budge at all. It’s a bit discouraging. Jay says that I need to just take it one step at a time and not get discouraged by this, but all he has to do is look at a treadmill and he loses 10 pounds. Curse his inherited metabolism of a hummingbird!

Actually, this just proves that I can’t rely completely on a change in diet to shed the weight. I need to do some exercising. Which, for me, is easier said than done. After a long day at work I would rather sit in my sewing room than hop on a treadmill or sweat to the oldies. I have been doing research on treadmills to figure out what I want and how much it’s going to cost me.  A year at the gym would technically be cheaper, but would I be more willing to use a treadmill that’s in my house as compared to having to drive to the gym?

In the meantime, I keep making new discoveries on the food front. Did you know that Chobani makes a line of yogurt that uses Stevia as the sweetener instead of sugar or high fructose corn syrup? They have a raspberry lemonade flavor that is FABULOUS! It’s the perfect blend of sweet and tart. I have been subbing this in for my serving of fruit during the week when I eat lunch.

The weird food thing that I noticed this week hit me yesterday. Once in a while I’ll get a craving for something sweet like gummi bears or M&M’s. What I’ve really been craving this week, though, is meat. It sounds so strange. I’ll be playing the piano at home and suddenly I’ll have the biggest craving for any kind of meat. I keep sliced turkey breast on hand and a couple slices of that usually helps. But doesn’t that sound strange? Who gets cravings for meat??

Dresses for Missions Update 3-18-15

My Creative Space - SewingWhen I’m stuck in my cubicle at work and I dream of escaping I don’t dream of a sandy beach or a wooded glen…

I dream of being in my sewing area surrounded by my fabric, lace and ribbon.

I’ve often prayed, “Lord, please let me win the lottery so that I can quit my job and spend more of my time helping to clothe your children.” Apparently that’s not part of His plan. *sigh*

Dresses for Missions #21Dress #21

This dress was a little more difficult to figure out how I wanted to dress it up. I didn’t quite have the right color of blue ribbon, but yet I also didn’t have the right color of orange, either. Since it was so busy already I didn’t want to add even more confusion to the mix, so I finally managed to figure out something simple.

I had another piece of iridescent lace that had an orange sparkle to it, so I used that around the hem. I then used some white cotton lace to accent the bottom and to go along with the orange cotton lace at the top.

Dresses for Missions #22Dress #22

I believe that I’ve used almost all of the pillow cases that my mom and sister had given to me last summer. With that being the case I had to dig into my fabric stash for my next dress. Actually, I’ve had this fabric for a while and have been wanting to make a dress out of it.

With these dresses I love adding the ruffle at the bottom, so I had to do that. I had specifically purchased red lace to go with this fabric so I tried to pick another frilly lace for the bottom of the ruffle. I know that the ruffle should probably be enough without the lace, but what can I say… I’m a lacey kind of gal!

Sugar Control Diet – Week #7

Cake Topper on CakeWeek #7

Mood: Tired, but happy about a productive day

Weight Change Week 7: 0 pounds

Total Weight Loss: 11 pounds

I’m disappointed that I didn’t lose any weight this week. Although, I have noticed a little bit of a trend. The weeks that I’ve really hit the peanuts and cashews hard are the weeks where I don’t lose any weight. So, I guess that I will lay off of them for a bit and see how it goes. It could be completely unrelated, or it could be the catalyst. We will definitely have to see.

I am also going to partially blame it on the fact that I had a mudslide last night at dinner. I have to admit that I’m still scared to re-introduce the stuff that I’ve been cutting out of my diet for the past month. However, my Nutritional Therapist said that I could have one to celebrate… so I did. I am very disappointed to admit that it was not nearly as satisfying as I had thought it would be. I told Jay that it just tasted… sweet. It could have been how the bartender mixed it, but I really couldn’t distinguish any of the flavors in it. I tasted the oily flavor of the whipped cream, but the rest of it was just… sweet.

You know, maybe it’s kind of like how you build something up in your mind about how good it used to be, and then when you experience it again it’s a bit of a disappointment. I guess that’s the way that I’m feeling about this whole sugar thing.

And again, my brain has recalibrated itself. This is a bit scary for me because never in a million years would I have expected this to happen. Here’s what happened: I was thinking about the bag of gluten free black licorice gummies that a friend had given to me last weekend. I was trying to determine if I would have the will power to eat just one at a time. You see, I LOVE black licorice and it’s hard to find it in a gluten free form. As I was contemplating this it suddenly hit me. I have a recipe for Paleo gummies (they use stevia as a sweetener, not real sugar) and even though it calls for orange flavoring I could always swap it out for anise flavoring and I could make my own black licorice gummies! Also, if I don’t add any coloring to it I can make black licorice gummies that won’t turn my mouth blackish blue! I actually became excited at this prospect!

The first food that I’m going to begin to re-introduce is potatoes since I had to give them up due to their starchiness. Today at my parents’ house I had a baked potato and it was good. Much more satisfying, actually, than the mudslide last night. Some time this week I will make a batch of tater tots. Mmmm… tots!!

Oh, and last week the grocery store had my favorite gluten free pizza on sale, so I bought one. I have it in the freezer and I’m waiting until I can add in the gluten free bread again. But it’s on hand.. waiting… 🙂

Winter Cross Project – 3-8-15

Winter Cross 2-22-15Now that this piece is nearing completion, I have to figure out how I want to frame it. Should I have Jay make a frame for me? Or should I use one that I have stashed away? Should I make it so that I can switch the crosses out each season, or do I frame them all individually and store them in their frames?

I have lots of decisions to make…

Here is how it looked the last time that I updated you. I was almost finished with the text.

Winter Cross 3-8-15The text is finished! All that remains is to finish outlining the bottom half of the cross, the butterfly, and various little viney things coming off of the bottom part of the cross. I also have to decide if I want to stitch in the randomly placed French knots that I think serve as berries or something. French knots are hard to do when they are out in the middle of nowhere, though, with nothing to anchor the thread behind.

Almost done!

CNC Router – Wildlife

CNC Router 2For the past week Jay has been working on a special project. His uncle contacted him and asked if it would be possible for Jay to use his router to carve various animals into wood for his uncle’s new workshop cabinets.

Of course, Jay said yes.

Jay and I are always trying to figure out how we can turn this hobby into a profitable business for us. Unfortunately, we haven’t yet been able to come up with an answer. When his uncle asked Jay about this we thought that maybe it could lead to other things.

First, Jay had to trace pictures of various wildlife and translate it so that the router could understand what it was supposed to do. We haven’t been able to find a quick and easy way of translating drawings into good router pictures, so he spent a lot of time manually tracing these pictures. With that being said, I think that he did an excellent job and I think that his uncle will be VERY happy with the results. What do you think?

I apologize if you can’t see the animals very well in the picture. If you click on them it might help you to better see the images. His uncle bought some expensive plywood that has an oak veneer on it, and so the pictures don’t stand out against the grain unless you’re standing right in front of it. They just don’t translate well to .jpeg. I have no idea how his uncle is going to finish these, but I hope that he finds a way to make them pop. Jay has an extra piece that he used for practice, so I’m going to take that to see which stain that I have will really make it look nice. That way I can at least show his uncle an example of how various stains will look. If we get to see the finished product I will definitely post pictures so that you can see, too.
