Summer Cross Update 5-9-15

Summer CrossSo I know that it’s not May 9th, but since that’s when I took the last picture of my progress than that’s the date for this post.

I don’t have a whole lot done, so I wanted to remind you what the finished product is going to look like. So pretty!

Summer Cross 4-23-15When I last posted, at the end of April, this was the state of my progress. I was working on grapes. Summer grapes? I won’t get into that again…

Summer Cross 5-9-15And here it is as of the 9th. The grapes really stand out next to those green leaves. There was a bit of a decision for me to make because I wanted to work on this one in the same way that I worked on the Winter Cross. I am going to stitch the left arm and then work my way clockwise around the cross. The problem was that the daisy to the right of the grapes overlap onto the right hand side of the cross. This doesn’t sound like a big deal, but if you’re weird like me then you know that this could be a struggle. Actually, the biggest pain for me was the fact that the daisy overlapped two of my working pages. So I had to constantly flip between the two pages and hope that I wasn’t miscounting. Once I am done with the daisy I will return to the left-hand side of the cross and continue working my way around in that manner.

I know… I make such a big deal out of silly things!

Sugar Control Diet – Week #14

Clematis 6-27-14Week #14

Weight Loss: 3 pounds

Total Weight Loss: 18 pounds

Mood: HAPPY!!

The sun is shining, my sinuses are unhappy, and my hands are all torn up from playing in the dirt yesterday. Plus, I lost three pounds this past week! YEAH!!!! If I could do a cartwheel, I would!

I don’t recall doing anything special this week in regards to my diet. Although, I was craving a lot of meat. Since it was warming up I got the grill out and grilled burgers. There’s nothing quite like the taste of charred flesh! Mmmm….

Now that the weather is cooperating I plan on being outside more often doing various things in my yard. I have a whole list of projects that I want to accomplish, and I’m making a list of flowers that I want and where I want them to go. The only issue is that we need to get our front porch and our basement entrance fixed. I’m hoping we can get the concrete guy out here soon to do that so that I can then plant my flowers.

This year for vegetables I’m going to grow cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers, peas and I’ll try beans again (they haven’t done well the past two years). I also want to add zucchini so that I can make my own zucchini relish instead of having to buy relish at the store. Not that it will save me a lot of money, but zucchini relish is GOOD.

Okay, so that didn’t really have much to do with my diet except that I will be getting more exercise now. I’m so happy that good weather is finally back!

A Cat Show!

Cat BenchNo, not a cat show at my house. Though, if you ask nicely enough Chester might show you where she sleeps most of the day. Or Bob might show you his favorite places to run.

There was a cat show here in town and I decided that I wanted to attend it. I’ve never been to one and I really had the urge to go Oooo and Awwww over cats without the temptation of taking them home. As I explained to Jay, even if they had kittens there for sale (which more than likely wouldn’t be the case) they would be purebreds and WAY beyond my price point. These cats would also not be neglected and in need of a good home. After these points were made Jay decided that it was safe to let me attend the show unsupervised.

2015 Cat ShowThis show was not held in a very upscale place. It was in one of the older-looking ice rinks in town and the place definitely did not get all dressed up for the occasion.

I had never even seen a cat show on TV so I had no idea what to expect. I’ve seen the dog shows, but this was COMPLETELY different. Which makes sense if you own a cat and understand their behaviors. A cat, for the most part, is NOT going to act on command and stand at attention while a judge looks them over.

White PersianThe cats weren’t even pretending to be involved in the proceedings! I had to take a picture of this Persian because he was so adorable. He just decided to sprawl out and enjoy himself while he waited for his turn in this ring.

Every time I look at these pictures I have to say, “AWWW!!!!!”

Cat Show JudgingI watched this judge from afar because I was trying to determine what she was doing. I couldn’t get close enough to hear, but I loved how she handled the cats. You can tell that she absolutely loves them and enjoys her job.

Cat Show ContestantI’m not sure what she was judging, but in order to keep the cat from trying to escape she had to play with them. The sisal-covered pole helped, too. I saw many cats, especially the Siamese, instantly stretch up and start scratching.

SiameseSpeaking of Siamese, they were the noisiest of the bunch. Which isn’t surprising since they are naturally one of the most vocal breed of cats. They also were not fond of the activity. I noticed that the Siamese and the other exotic breeds seemed to be the most nervous in the surroundings.

More PersiansThe Persians were the most laid-back. Again, not surprising. They all laid in the cages as if to say, “I can sleep anywhere. Just leave me alone!”

My sister has a Himalayan (which is part Persian) and as she puts it, “He’s for decoration only.”

Persian JudgingAs I was walking by another judging ring I noticed that all of the cats being judged were of the long hair variety. This intrigued me (as they’ve always been my favorite) and so I stopped to watch. This judge was also very good with the cats and really enjoyed working with them. She was also very informative and funny! As she judged each cat she would talk about what she was looking for, particular aspects of the breed that she was judging, and any other interesting tidbit about the breed or color of the cat.

Checking the roundnessAs you can tell, she didn’t need to entertain this cat to keep her still. The cat kept trying to get away, but not quickly. lol

I believe that this one won the highest award in its category from this judge.

Playful PersianThen there was this little guy. According to the judge he was five months old, and thus still very much a kitten. As she was trying to judge him he was wanting to play with EVERYTHING. She said, “Apparently this guy doesn’t realize that he’s supposed to be subdued and laid back!”

Adorable PersianAfter she walked away and was judging the next cat he was still messing with the ribbons on his cage. The other Persians would just sit there, or sprawl out, when placed back in their cages, but not this guy.

At this point I had to keep myself from going over there and rubbing my face in his fur and giving him kissies. He was THAT adorable!

Persian Still PlayingAnd he’s still at it… even after the judge was finished with the next one. She was taking her time with them, too. This one she explained to us the difference between the calico and tortoise-shell colored cats… she judged the features of this Persian against her criteria… and she took her time really looking at this cat…

While Mr. Busybody was playing with everything and anything!

Fluffy PersiansThey were so sweet, though. If it wasn’t for the high maintenance that they require, I would possibly be interested in getting a Persian as my next cat.

But the fur would drive me insane. I already know that.

Persian Winner of DivisionI returned home, without a cat, and proceeded to show Jay the pictures that I had taken. He indulged me, though he did shake his head at me. I can’t help it. How could you NOT want to rub your face in the fur of one of these puffy beauties??

It was definitely an enjoyable day.

Summer Cross

Now that the Winter Cross is finished, it’s time to start the next one. It was a difficult decision as to which one I should start next. Do I start the one that I like best of the remaining three? How about if I start one that, theoretically, I will be getting ready to hang up after I’m finished with it? Do I draw straws to figure out which one should be next?

Summer CrossSince it took me a little over a year to finish the Winter Cross I determined that I should start on the Summer Cross. This way, in a little over a year, if I can get it done in time it should be close to the end of June and ready to be placed on the wall.

Also, this one had a rose in it. I love roses.

There are also enough color changes to keep things interesting. When I was looking at the Autumn Cross I shuddered because it’s just a whole palate of various shades of orange, brown, and gold. I am not an Autumn person, so that one is going to be difficult for me to stitch.

Summer Cross 4-23-15This is my progress as of April 23rd. I started this on Tax Day, so not a whole lot managed to get done. I believe that this is a bunch of grapes. Now, living in grape country I would have put grapes on the Autumn Cross as that’s when they are ripe and ready for picking around here. There’s nothing better than driving down the road in October and smelling the grapes. Mmmm…

But, here they are in summer. Oh well. Perhaps next time the designer will think to consult with me first. 🙂

Winter Cross Framed

Winter Cross 4-9-15I am still so excited that I managed to finally finish this piece! Halfway through it I thought that I might have been insane to start it.

I’m glad that I did, though. I’ve had a spot reserved for it on the wall since I refinished the dresser in my living room. I knew the exact look I wanted for it, too.

Typically when I frame a piece I will use the pre-cut mats that you can purchase at A.C. Moore or Michael’s. This piece, though, was different. Due to the image that I had in my head I decided to break down and pay to have mats cut specifically for it. I measured it, though, so that I could fit it all in a standard size frame.

Winter Cross Framed 4-18-15What do you think?

In order to get a deep rich look to the mats I had to go with fabric mats, which were a bit pricier. I knew that if I cheaped out, though, I wouldn’t be happy. I went with a deep red for the inside and I framed that with a deep hunter green. I knew that the frame would have to be fairly rich-looking, too, to keep the feel that I was going for.

I think that this worked out quite nicely.

Winter Cross Hanging 4-26-15This isn’t the best picture, but it gives you an idea of how it looks. It is flanked by the Our Father and the Creed, which I received as gifts from the RCIA last year when I was getting ready to be baptized and confirmed. On this table sits my grandmother’s bible, Jay’s grandmother’s rosary (which was another baptism gift), a decorative box that Jay’s mom gave to me, plus both mine and Jay’s baptismal candles. Jay refers to it as my Catholic shrine. I told him that in order to really qualify as that I need a statue of Mary within a half-buried bath tub. 😉

Airplane Stuff

It has been a while since I’ve posted anything on my blog regarding airplanes. The biggest reason for this is because Jay has been too busy playing with his 3D printer, CNC Router, and his new laser head for the router. There are way too many toys and not enough time!

Recently, however, one of our friends from church has been itching to get into the RC Airplane habit/obsession. For the past year or so I’ve given him all of the copies of Jay’s magazines once they have piled up to a point where I need to get them out of the house. Apparently Dave, our friend, takes them home and just pours over them. Well, he decided that he wanted to go out to the Weak Signals RC show in Toledo this year.

Rascal Lit Up 7-30-13The Weak Signals show is where Jay picked up his SIG Rascal 110. We hadn’t been out there since then so we told them that they could head out with us.

It was an enjoyable day. I didn’t take any pictures at the actual show so you’ll have to take my word for it that we went. Jay didn’t have anything in mind that he wanted to buy so he just made a list of a few little things to pick up for the better prices that you get at the show (batteries, motors, etc).

Toledo 2015 HaulThis was his haul…

It doesn’t look like much, but the balsa kit is going to end up being quite large. That will take up its own post at a later date.

Ziroli A-1 CowlTo give you an idea of how big this airplane is going to be, here’s a picture of the cowl for it —>

I left the beer bottle in the picture for size reference. We are thinking that Jay might have to purchase a trailer in order to transport this one.

Toledo 2015 GoodiesAs you can see the rest of his haul is fairly boring. Batteries, shrink tube, quad propellors, aileron extension wire, deans connectors, etc.

The T-shirt is mine. 🙂

“We called it Corsair. They called it Whistling Death.”

Now that Jay has this kit waiting in the wings he has decided to get back to his other jets that he had started, but not finished. Technically, he didn’t decide to get back to them. I essentially pointed out that he shouldn’t start another new airplane until the other two are finished. The Yellow A-4 is back on his workbench and I will post some updates on that later this week. After that he has to finish up his Panther that he was scratch building. It will be Fall before he can start on the new one.

Sugar Control Diet – Week #12 & 13

Bikini Babe 1982Weeks #12 & 13

Weight Change – 0 pounds

Total Weight Loss – 15 pounds

Mood – Frustrated

Well, nicer weather is FINALLY beginning to arrive so it will soon be time to break out the bikini! All I have to do is lose a few more pounds and I’ll be able to fit back into this cute little number…

Actually, I had a discussion with Jay the other day regarding swimming and bathing suits. He was amazed that when I was growing up that I spent the majority of my summers at the local park taking swimming lessons and spending all afternoon in the lake. I still love to swim and I love being in the water. I just don’t want other people to see me in my bathing suit. Also, he wants to go out to Vegas at some point so that we can lay by the pool all week sipping on drinks. Yeah… that doesn’t appeal to me. Not only because of the bathing suit thing, but also because to me laying in the sun is a huge waste of time. I have things to do! Places to go! People to avoid!

Last weekend it was very nice weather, and I had an appointment for a pedicure, so I thought that I would try on a pair of my capris that I was unable to wear last summer. I was keeping my fingers crossed because they had fit me just fine two summers ago. I almost did a jig when I realized that they fit again! Woo-hoo!

For the most part I am still eating more protein and vegetables than anything, but I have been eating “regular” stuff now and again. I had spaghetti for supper last night. That was the first time that I’ve had pasta since January. I REALLY enjoyed it, but attempted to control myself and not eat too much. I’m not sure how well that worked, but I gave it a try.

I have noticed that if I eat too much of something starchy that I then have ravenous cravings for sugar. The best way that I’ve found to combat the urge is to go do an activity that I get so involved  in that it takes my mind off of everything else. The best activity for this is to work on my Dresses for Missions. It keeps my mind busy and I quickly forget about the sugar. Let’s hope I can keep it up.

As soon as the weather remains a bit steadier in temperature I want to get out and start working aggressively on my gardens. Everybody else around me has been cleaning out their beds and planting flowers, but I’ve hesitated. It’s only the end of April so there is still a good chance of a heavy killing frost. My hope is that once I can get back outside to play in the dirt that not only will I not think about sugar cravings, but the added activity will help me to lose more weight. To get down to my ideal weight I would like to lose another 30 pounds. I’m not sure how doable that is, but I’m going to give it a shot!

Dresses for Missions Update 4-24-15

Well, I did it! This year for Lent instead of giving something up I decided that I was going to sew at least one dress a week in order to help clothe God’s children. I wanted the little girls to put on the dresses and feel like a princess. The dresses that I make with the ruffles take longer to sew together due to having to gather the ruffle and all the fun that goes along with that.

Dresses for Missions #24 3-25-15Dress #24

It seems like with every new dress I have a new favorite dress that I’ve sewn. This one fits that bill. When I was finished I felt like it was a beautifully classy dress, almost like a Blue Willow dish. I used an embroidered eyelet lace around the hem, a white embossed ribbon around the ruffle, and then an embroidered eyelet trim at the top.

Dresses for Missions #25 4-3-15Dress #25

This was clearance fabric from Valentine’s Day. It was a girly enough pattern that I felt I could use it without somebody saying, “Well, that’s nice, but you can only wear it on Valentine’s Day.”

I found some pretty, sparkly blue ribbon that matched the blue hearts and then I had some heart lace trim that I used along the neckline. The ribbon is my favorite part of this one.

Group Dresses for Missions 1 - 2 4-23-15Group – Dress #1 & 2

The other ladies in the Dresses for Missions ministry manage to sew a lot of dresses, but trimming is always the last step. To help them out I will sometimes take a group of the dresses to finish them. I add the binding around the arms, turn the tops down to make the pockets for the ties, and then add the ties. I was also asked if I had lace at home for the dresses, so I guess that they also wanted me to lace them up a bit. I treated these ones a lot like the pillowcases that I use; I added lace on the bottom and if I felt like it needed it I would add some at the neckline. It took me almost every free moment that I had between Sunday and Wednesday to do these, but I had them done to turn them in a week after I brought them home.

Group Dresses for Missions 3 - 4 4-23-15Group – Dress #3 & 4

Some of these dresses were darling! The dress on the left had some really bright stars on the fabric so I used bright green for the arms and bright yellow for the ties. Then the lace at the bottom was a nice pink that matched the background of the top part.

Group Dresses for Missions 5 - 6 4-23-15Group – Dress #5 & 6

These two were made exactly the same, so I took great pleasure in making them different. The dress on the left was trimmed in brown and I used a brown lace on the bottom. The dress on the right has an olive green trim and ties, and then a thicker knit lace on the bottom.

Group Dresses for Missions 7 - 8 4-23-15Group – Dress #7 & 8

The dress on the left had the darling roses on it so I didn’t want to detract from those, however, I DID have to add the extra lace on the top. It just called for it. The dress on the right allowed me to use some lace that I had received in a lace grab bag that I thought I would never use. Where would I ever use peach colored lace??! Right here!

Group Dresses for Missions 9 4-23-15Group – Dress #9

Okay, so the ribbon on the neckline doesn’t exactly go, but let me give you my reasoning for using it…

First off, it was darling. Secondly, it matches the light lavender lace that I used on the hem. The blue material at the bottom has a light lavender color running through it, plus there are a lot of dark purple flowers on the main body of the dress. Oh, and the main body has a checkered kind of pattern running through the background, as does the ribbon. It’s lacey and it’s purple. Some little girl is going to love it!

So that’s what I’ve been doing this week. And I loved every minute of it! There’s something soothing and relaxing about sewing. I love starting with pieces of material and ending up with an actual dress. I just wish that I could see the look on the girls’ faces when they are handed their lace-trimmed dress.

Sugar Control Diet – Week #11

Cucumber Plants 6-27-14Week #11

Mood: Dreaming of green…

Weight Loss Week #11: 1 pound

Total Weight Loss: 15 pounds!

Yea!!!

Now that most of the snow is gone and the temperatures are finally climbing out of the 30’s I am beginning to dream of spring days, playing in the dirt, and sunshine on my shoulders. I am allergic to almost everything outside, but that doesn’t stop me. I can’t wait to get the shovel out and start turning the soil. I have been thinking about it and I’m going to plant some zucchini this year. The last several years I’ve hoped to run into people who had so much that they were giving it away. Apparently nobody does that anymore so I will have to plant my own.

Zucchini relish… Mmmmm…. This diet has me looking at all labels and trying to take as much sugar as possible out of my diet. At least, as much added sugar as possible. I was horrified when I realized that most of the hamburger relishes that I looked at used high fructose corn syrup. Yuck! When I was younger my mom made a ton of zucchini relish one year, so I think that will be my major canning project this summer. I love grilling burgers and hot dogs and then covering them in relish. Jay isn’t impressed, but that just means more for me!

I had another diet realization this week. I know that my friend Jamie is doing cartwheels as she’s reading this… *Sigh*. I was busy this last week and I think that Jay was working third shift so I finished up some tater tots and then had some leftover cheesey potatoes. Within 15 minutes of eating that I found myself digging through the drawer where I keep our candy. I needed something sweet! That’s when I stopped and forced myself to close the drawer. I realized that I had loaded my body up with the starchy sugar from the potatoes and now it wanted more. I didn’t want to spiral down into that endless tunnel so I grabbed a bottle of water and made myself go upstairs to mess around in my sewing room. I figured that was the farthest away from the candy drawer that I could go. My craving eventually died down, but it really hit me just how close I always am to just wanting to dig into the sugar.

I’ve been wanting to make some gluten free pasta for myself, but this potato incident has me hesitating. I’m not sure that I’ll be able to summon up enough will power to walk away the next time. I did have some gluten free pizza yesterday and that was very tough to walk away from, so I won’t be doing that very often. For the most part I’ve been trying to stick to what I was eating when I was completely off of sugar; lots of meat, veggies, and some fruit mixed in there for good measure.

It’s definitely starting to get tough now!

Winter Cross Finished!!

Winter Cross 3-30-15Last week when I posted I didn’t have a lot of stitching left on this project. I was working on backstitching the bottom part of the cross.

Winter Cross 4-9-15And here it is completed! I put the last stitches in it this morning.

So now I’m sad. I don’t have anything to stitch on in the morning. Last night I decided to order the fabric for the next one, but I was so disappointed! I believe that I used 32 ct Opalescent White Lugana for this project. I can’t get this fabric in 32 ct anymore, only 28! Instead I had to order 32 ct Opalescent White Belfast Linen. I’m not sure how I’ll like that. Lugana is an evenweave, so you don’t have the flubs and uneven-ness of linen. *sigh*

So now to decide… which cross should I start next?
