The A-10 Warthog Project

The A-10 Warthog. A jet that is so ugly that it’s cute. Your first reaction to it is, man, that’s ugly! It’s almost as if a regular jet suddenly had two growths spurting from its backside, but it’s hoping that nobody else notices. Like the old person with the huge goiter protruding from their neck. If they act like it’s not there then nobody else will notice. I just want to go up to it and say, “Mr. Warthog, I hate to inform you of this, but you have two giant tumors protruding from your behind. You might want to get a doctor to look at it.” lol

Well, my Dearest has decided that this will be his winter project. He ordered a kit that he has to build himself and it arrived this past week. The box was huge! And it was full of styrofoam pieces. That’s it. Just foam. Can you imagine?? He was happy, though, and that’s all that matters. This is what a box of Warthog-shaped foam looks like:

You can’t tell, but this is going to be HUGE. I can’t recall the dimensions, but I’m thinking that when it is all said and done it will have to be close to 5′ long. Not only do you have to glue the pieces together, but there is a LOT of building to it. You cover it in wood and then assemble the electronic parts together (at least, I think so… I’m just an observer. I’m still getting this whole plane thing down). Here is the beginning pile of wood (I’m told that when it’s all assembled that there will be a LOT more wood than this):

Here is the progress on this project after the first weekend working on it.

You can’t see all of the hard work that Jay has put into it. He spent a lot of time lining the inside of it with balsa wood, plus other parts of the jet.

Can you see the wood that is lining the inside? Β All of the blue tape is holding the parts of the jet together while the epoxy dries.

Here is another picture of parts that Jay managed to get lined with wood:

He told me what those parts were called. The vertical something or another… I think… lol. To all of you non-aeronautic people it’s one of the parts that are on the tail of the jet and helps to steer the jet in various directions.

While I’m bragging on my pilot I would like to show off a few more things that he has designed and made himself. Jay makes his own fiberglass housings for his modified fans. Again, if you have no idea what that is, this is what it looks like:

The white round part is the fiberglass housing that Jay designed. In fact, he showed me how to make them, too. Can you see the bracket, there? He designed that as well. πŸ™‚ (He’s really smart when it comes to this type of thing). Would you like to see a close up?

Okay, so if you’re a girl it probably doesn’t look very impressive. However, if you’re into RC planes or jets then you’re really impressed with this. Especially when you find out how little it will cost for one of Jay’s creations instead of buying from a hobby shop. Jay has had a lot of interest in both his fans and the brackets. Apparently he’s sold some of each and I told him that I thought he should get some kind of recognition. Now, most of these will either be painted over or hidden in some way, but I designed a logo of sorts for Jay to use. I cross stitch it on evenweave and then he includes it in the manufacturing of the fiberglass bracket. This is what the first one looked like:

We’ve done a bit of modification to the cut-out (round instead of square), but this way I feel that at least he will be putting his signature on it in some way. What do you think?

Kitten WIP 10-16-11

I have been working on my second quilt square, a little kitten. Here is what it looked like a few weeks ago:

I’ve added a little more of the black striping and began to put in some of the brown. Here it is today:

He’s going to be a cutie! πŸ™‚

Ace & TJ’s Grin Kids

I wanted to take a quick moment to share something with you guys that has really touched my heart. Most of you who read my blog know that I grew up with a wonderful, yet mentally retarded and multi-handicapped sister. Chrissy was a lot of responsibility for my family and we sacrificed a lot for her, but I know that we would all do it again in a heartbeat if we could have her back with us. In fact, it was Chrissy who influenced my younger sister to go into the special education field. So when I learned about Grin Kids I knew that this was the work of some very special people.

Ace and TJ are two morning radio personalities who live in Charlotte, NC. My sister, Kimberly, introduced me to the radio program shortly after she moved down there and I have been hooked ever since. Yes, I live in NY where Ace and TJ do not broadcast, but I listen to their podcast every day at work. I feel like I am part of their radio family even though the only chance for me to actually hear them on the radio is when I’m visiting my sister. The group of people who work on this show are some VERY good people. They all have hearts of gold and are very generous with their time and money.

Grin Kids is their charity for terminally ill and chronically disabled children. From their website (www.grinkids.org):

Each year, Ace & TJ’s Grin Kids charters a 737 to take these children, with their sibling, parents, and health care workers to DisneyWorld in Florida. Because of their special needs and financial strain, this is an experience that many of these children and families would not be able to know without the help of Ace & TJ’s Grin Kids.

Over the years, Ace & TJ’s Grin Kids has taken over 241 Grin Kids and their families to DisneyWorld. And during the 5-day vacation, all expenses are paid, including air travel, ground transportation, Disney Park-Hopper passes, meals, hotel rooms at a Disney Resort, and Disney Dollars for souvenirs.

Grin Kids is funded exclusively by listener donations. Some are large, some are small, but without the listeners, the “Radio Family” participating in various fundraising events, the Grin Kids trip would not be possible year to year. “

This is a very great thing that these guys do for these families. Growing up we never took a real family vacation. Chrissy was unable to enjoy the same things that Kimberly and I enjoyed, and also we didn’t have a lot of money to spend on vacations. It took us six months to set up the care that we would need to watch Chrissy when I graduated from college so that we could be gone for four days to Gettysburg. Having this kind of background and these kinds of experiences makes me realize full well what a lot of these families are dealing with on a day-to-day basis. So a family vacation might not sound like that big of a deal to some people, but to these families this is a miracle. Not only do they ALL get to go and share in the experiences together, but they get to do it in one of the most magical places on Earth.

What really touches you, though, is not just the fact that it’s an all-expenses paid trip. Yes, that’s a pretty awesome thing, but how these kids react while at Disney is what gets me choked up. Remember I said that I listen to the show while I’m at work? When the show goes to DisneyWorld with the Grin Kids the radio family is introduced to the families on the trip and how they are reacting to the whole thing. To hear that a terminally ill child has been in complete bliss and has laughed happily the entire time gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes. For a few days these families can forego the stress of worrying about the next round of meds, or perhaps the next seizure, or even the next doctor’s appointment and the news that will come out of that. Instead, for a few days their child is enjoying the magic and wonderfulness of Disney just like everybody else. There is true joy and happiness for this child, instead of pain and struggle. They get to meet Mickey and Minnie and the Disney Princesses. They get to experience the flashing lights and high-pitched strains of music in the Small World ride. They get to see the bright, flashy colors and pounding music of The Lion King stage show. They are filled with wonder, awe, and pure happiness.

I honestly wish that I could experience this with the families. If I lived in the Charlotte area this would be one of the charities that I would volunteer for on a constant basis. Unfortunately, I live in NY where the only way that I can experience this is by listening to the interviews and watching the videos. Please take the time to watch a few of these videos and pictures, but make sure to keep some kleenex handy. Then go and meet the kids

All that I ask is that if you should be feeling charitable at any time during the year please consider making a donation to Grin Kids. You can donate through their site at any time. Knowing that you helped to make a mother cry happy tears when she hears her child really laugh for the first time will be all the thanks that you will need. If you are unable to donate, I completely understand. I just ask that you keep the Grin Kids, their families, the many volunteers, and Ace and TJ in your prayers. May God bless them all.

Life Choices

There are times when you make huge decisions and you’re never sure if you made the right choice. You have to do what is best for you and then live without any regrets. When I was getting ready to transfer to a four year college (after completing my associates degree at the local community college) I was trying to decide if I wanted to continue down the path I had started on. You see, these were my options…

OR

My intention was to major in accounting, get my degree and then get my CPA license. However, I have an intense love and obsession for the Civil War. I looked up what I would need to do in order to take the test to be a license battlefield guide at Gettysburg National Military Park. I dreamed of spending my summers leading tourists on interesting and inspiring tours of the battlefield and the town. To instill the love of the Civil War in the mind of a child, so that the history would continue to be told, was what I wanted more than anything.

So there I stood, getting ready to transfer to a college to finish up my accounting degree and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue with that or perhaps get a degree in history. The problem was that the school where I was attending could only give me a degree in history in general. There wasn’t even a concentration in Civil War history. The next issue, though, was that once I had my degree in history what would I do with it?? I read the paper and knew that there weren’t a ton of jobs out there for history teachers, let alone those steeped in the Civil War. I may have dreams, but I’m a realist for the most part. A degree in history would essentially be what I affectionately refer to as a ‘throw away’ degree. In other words, it’s not practical to make a living with if you want to be a success, or at least don’t want to be a starving artist.

Thus, I became an accountant. I decided that I would major in accounting so that I could afford my obsession.

For the most part I LOVE my job. It’s detail oriented and I’m good at it. I have earned some respect in the company so that people come to me for answers to their questions. It’s very rewarding for me.

Today I was working on our September planning variances and their explanations when the company president’s new assistant was brought around to meet everybody. Whenever a new person is brought to my cubicle to meet me they instantly look around at the various things that I have hanging up, instead of at me. I’m completely fine with that because I don’t hide the fact that I’m a huge Civil War fan. Yes, I do have pictures of Lincoln, Lee, Jackson, and Longstreet hanging on my cubicle walls. This girl today wasn’t any different. The woman who introduced us said to her, “Kerry is interested in the Civil War, if you couldn’t tell.” She told us that she is as well and that she got her degree in history. I told her that I had decided to go into accounting to fund my obsession. She replied that she decided to go into what she loved. I don’t feel that it was a put down to me, just a statement.

I thought about this after she left, though. If I had gone ahead and received a degree in history, what would I be doing now? Instead of having a good job that I love and earning decent money that is allowing me to buy a house, would I be taking whatever job I could find? I worked as a secretary when I was in college and I didn’t care for the work. It wasn’t challenging enough for me. The duties of a secretary are not anything that I enjoy doing. Yes, I know that their title is ‘Personal Assistant’, but it’s a secretarial position essentially. I have nothing against secretaries, or assistants, and if somebody loves doing that job then that’s great! It’s not for me, though. And that’s the thought that was running through my head. I would feel like I had thrown away the money I paid for tuition if I had received a degree in history and then ended up working in a completely different field.

Yes, I can happily say that I made the right decision for me. No regrets. πŸ™‚

Prepping For A House

If you ever decide to buy a house, let me give you a little hint. DON’T! You will be better off to find a baseball-sized rock and repeatedly hit yourself in the head. That will save you a lot of time, effort and money and still have the same outcome. lol Yes, I’m being a bit dramatic. I am in the process of buying my first house and it has been long and frustrating. Mainly because of the lawyer. After all, I don’t feel that it should take TWO MONTHS just to send out a form letter, but what do I know? I’m just an accountant.

Now that I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel I have decided that it would be okay to purchase a few things for my new place. Would you like to see what I’ve squirreled away?

First we have the end tables that my mom bought me for $15 at the flea market:

You can only see the one, but it’s sitting on the second one. Yes, she got both of these for $15 total. No, I don’t know how she manages to do it. lol. I have no idea how my living room will be set up, but these will be in there somewhere.

The next items were found online due to the morning news program that I watch while getting ready for work. They had a daily deal for some stainless steel mixing bowls with anti-skid silicone on the bottoms.

Everybody needs a set of stainless steel mixing bowls, right? I already have my Pyrex bowls in the attic so I’m all set there. The next part of the deal was a set of stainless steel kitchen utensils (ladle, serving spoons, etc).

Because I don’t like to be cold at night I have fallen in love with flannel sheets. I have two sets, but I’m always afraid that I’m going to wear them out. Sears had a sale going last week where the flannel sheet sets were 40% off, plus I had an additional 10% off coupon. So I bought myself a new set.

I’m not usually a red person, but these struck my fancy so I decided to go for it.

Now, when I move I’m taking Bob and Chester with me. Bissell and Elmer will be staying at my parents’ house. A few years ago I bought a drinking fountain water dish for the cats because the running water encourages them to drink more, and I’m always worried about Urinary Tract Infections in the boys. I had figured that I would be taking the water dish with me, but my mother decided that she would need it since she would still have two cats plus the dog. So I had to order another one because Bob and Chester love it as well. I haven’t removed it from the box, but it’s the same model as this one:

With any kind of luck Bob will be able to recognize when his tail is in the new one. lol

Finally, my BIG purchase. Technically I haven’t purchased this yet, but I talked to the owner of the store yesterday and he said that it should be ready for me by the end of the week.

This is a Rainbow Vacuum cleaner, E series. These are expensive machines, but they last for ever! They are also very good for people who have allergies (like me). You see, they are a bagless canister vac. The reason why they are so good for people with allergies is that the dust and dirt gets sucked into the canister, which has water in the bottom of it to catch and hold all dust particles. When you are done vacuuming you dump the water and dirt either outside or down the toilet and that’s it. The E series also has a hepa filter to make sure that it isn’t letting anything escape back into the air.

They have different floor heads and attachments with them:

So I will be able to use it on my hardwood floors to suck the dust and cat hair up and out of the environment, instead of just pushing it around with a dust mop. The one that I’m buying is reconditioned, but the guy has gone over it with a fine tooth comb to make sure that everything is working correctly. He has ordered a new hepa filter for it, along with a new set of attachments. I am spending a LOT on this vacuum, but it’s a steal as compared to what I’ve been able to find elsewhere and it will last me at least 10 years if not more. My mother has had two Rainbows and I believe that they both lasted her at least 10 years, and they were used when she got them.

That’s my exciting news for this week!

Cat Square WIP 10-3-11

I haven’t posted my current square on here because until recently it just looked like some black blobs on my fabric. You can begin to see the cat, though, so I can now start taking progress pictures. He’s going to be stinkin’ adorable when I finish him. He reminds me a lot of Elmer:

As I get more stitched on him you will see… lol. Silly Elmer!

I Am

I Am… very powerful words to Christians. It is the name of God. I Am. We were all created in his likeness and thus are a reflection of who He is when we say I Am. It’s something to really live up to. I was reminded of this when I read the Unbound post at (in)courage.

The little girl reminds me of what I try to do a lot. It reminds me of what we all try to do. After all, fashion magazines wouldn’t make nearly as much money if we didn’t all think that we had to live up to some ideal that society has set for us. I am a 5’10” woman with brown eyes, brown hair, and a peasant stock build. There is NO WAY that I will ever be able to slim down to a size 2. There is no way that I am going to dye my hair blonde or wear blue contacts. It’s just not going to happen. And yet I feel like I’m not as worthy as the blonde sitting next to me just because the studies all say that guys prefer blondes with blue eyes and size 2 waists.

This is me. Kerry, plain and tall. I don’t like that picture at all. I would destroy it if I thought it would do any good. Whenever I look at it I see everything that is wrong with me. It makes me wonder how such a great and cute guy like Jay could ever want to date me. I mean, look at me. There’s nothing that says that I’m a hot woman with a lot going for her. Then I read that blog post about the little girl wanting to change her appearance to be something that she wasn’t, just to impress others. I AM…

I AM… a Civil War obsessed woman who owns over 300 books on the war and even sews my own Civil War dresses just because I like wearing them.

I AM… a sister who felt like I had to care for and watch over my other two sisters. And I am also a sister who misses Chrissy VERY much despite the fact that she was a lot of responsibility.

I AM… a girly girl who LOVES dressing up in beautiful dresses with large skirts. My senior prom I spent most of the time walking around and feeling beautiful despite the fact that I wasn’t wearing a typical prom dress.

I AM… a celiac. It makes me very careful about everything that I eat and even touch. It makes it hard to date me because I have to be selfish and make sure that my health needs are put at the top of the priority list.

I AM… me. Plain and simple. I may wear glasses and go barefoot half of the time (or maybe that’s half barefoot… lol), but that’s who I am. Like me or leave me. What you see is what you get. I’m not going to starve myself in order to cave to a definition of beauty that I will never reach. Why should I? I am going to continue to be me. I am going to swoon at pictures of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. I will continue to worry and watch over my younger sister as best as I can. I will always love cats and want to cuddle them. And no matter what, I will know that I am beautiful and special. And that Jay, or any other guy, is lucky to have me in his life. After all, why go for typical when you can have me??

Gettysburg: Day 3

Tonight I drove to Erie so that I could listen to a presentation on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg. This is my favorite battle of the entire Civil War. If you really know me, then you would think that’s odd since General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson had been dead for well over a month by the time of this battle. Most people say that it’s their favorite because it’s the only one that they know. I can’t explain why it’s my favorite, all that I can say is that there’s something that pulls me to it. When I am in Gettysburg it’s like I’m home. And yes, the picture above is a piece that I actually stitched. I have yet to frame it, but this was definitely a piece that I did for myself.

It has been quite a few years since I’ve been to Gettysburg National Military Park, but I am dying to go back. Since I was last there in December of 2007 they have built the new visitor’s center, restored the cyclorama, and have done a LOT of restoration work to the actual land in order to get it back to how it looked during the battle. This way when you’re standing on Little Round Top you will be able to see the same thing that the 20th Maine saw when they were fighting Hood’s group of Texans.

I took Jay with me tonight and I think that he had a good time. He could only stay for part of it because he had to go to work, but I was happy that the speaker told Jay the same thing that I had told him earlier. Jay had asked me what was so special about the third day of the battle and I told him that it was the turning point; that was where the Union won the battle. Up until that point the Confederates had the upper hand and were kicking butt. However, after a series of misunderstandings and poorly executed strategies, plus some really spectacular fighting on the Union side, there was a change in the outcome and the Union was FINALLY left holding the high ground and the victory. I definitely don’t know as much as the speaker did about the battle, but I had known enough that I think Jay actually took me seriously. lol

This is the Strong Vincent monument on Little Round Top. Little Round Top saw their fighting mainly on the second day of the battle. Vincent, a native of Erie, PA, helped to direct the units to LRT and helped to keep the Confederates from flanking the Union Army and completely destroying any chance of the Union winning the war. Vincent was mortally wounded and died a few days later.

The third day involved the infamous Pickett’s Charge. When Cemetery Ridge was mentioned I leaned over and told Jay that it’s my favorite place to watch the sun set on the entire battlefield.

That’s the stone wall where the 69th PA managed to hold off the onslaught of Confederates as they reached the wall and breached the Union line. What I wouldn’t give to be able to see the sight of those 15,000 men walking that mile of ground. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it!

If you’ve never been to Gettysburg then I highly suggest that you visit. It’s a gorgeous little town despite the devastation that took place 148 years ago. You don’t have to be a Civil War buff in order to enjoy the museum, either. Just be a fan of history. That’s it.

When reading about Gettysburg, or the Civil War in general, please keep in mind that things can be interpreted in different ways. Also, keep in mind that pieces of fiction are just that… fiction. They might come very close to the actual history, but it’s not always accurate. For instance, the movie “Gettysburg” does a good job of telling the story, but a lot is left out and some of it is embellished. They had to shorten it for content and also make it interesting enough without being boring. Some people would say that they didn’t accomplish this, but I love the movie. That is, if you can get past the HORRIBLE acting of Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee. I should be grateful because if he hadn’t done it then the program might never have been made. They tried to get Robert Duvall to play Lee (he’s actually related to Lee through his mother), but at the last minute he had to drop out. The producers and director were scrambling when Sheen agreed to do it. A better portrayal of Lee is done in the movie “Gods and Generals” by Robert Duvall.

If you’re interested in reading about the Battle of Gettysburg you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a book. There have been over 35,000 books written on this battle alone! I always bring up that fact when people think that me having over 300 books on the Civil War is a bit extensive. Ha! However, my favorite book to read is “Gettysburg: A Testing of Courage” by Noah Andre Trudeau. Not only does he cover the military aspect, but you also get a glimpse into the civilian side of things. It’s not often that this is done. I highly recommend this book.

I don’t want to go on at length, but I have one more thing that I want to leave you with regarding this post. There are a series of paintings, and I’m not sure of the artist, but they show the veterans sitting at various places in Gettysburg. They are thinking about what happened there and what they saw. It’s rather haunting to look at these for very long, but they also give me goosebumps so I would like to share one with you. This one has Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (the Colonel of the 20th Maine) sitting on Little Round Top and remembering his part in that ferocious day.

Weekend Fun

This was a VERY good weekend πŸ™‚ I was able to spend some unexpected time with my very handsome pilot. This guy:

We had a great time just hanging out and enjoying each other’s company. We had dinner with his mom and I was VERY touched because she made sure that everything, including dessert, was gluten free! It really touches me when people go above and beyond to try to make things gluten free when they haven’t ever had to eat or cook like that.

Today I had to attend a Celiac Awareness walk that was put on by the Celiac Sprue Association’s Erie chapter. It’s always a good time. They have an awesome chinese raffle and a wonderful lunch, including a GF Dairy Queen ice cream cake! I didn’t actually participate today since I was the Udi’s girl.

It was a beautiful day, but I was anxious to get back to Jay so that I could spend what few hours I had left with him before he had to go to work and I had to head home. And since he works third shift I was looking forward to taking a nap with him since I was exhausted after being out in the sun all day. lol

Well, I got back to his place and what do I find on his counter waiting for me?

A dozen red roses! Out of the blue! They had a card in them that really touched me and I had to hold back the tears. He’s so sweet, though he won’t admit it. I keep telling him that I’m the luckiest girl in the galaxy. It’s definitely true. That’s why I do my best to try to spoil him, though not too much. πŸ˜‰

I would like to share something that I designed for Jay. He creates his own fiberglass brackets and housings for his jet’s fans. He’s so smart when it comes to that sort of thing. He even taught me how to lay up a fiberglass housing so that I can help him. Well, he saw my angel square that I was stitching and wanted to know if I would be able to do that on the fiberglass fabric since it’s woven very similarly to my stitching fabric. I drew up some designs and showed them to him this weekend. This was his favorite:

I am not an artist by any stretch of the imagination, but I did my best to create something that made me think of him and that was fairly simple in its design. What better is there to represent my Dearest than a jet?? And his initials, of course. I was pleased as punch when he was falling over himself with excitement. He automatically thought of other things on which he can imprint this design. I didn’t think that he would be impressed with what I had come up with, but luckily he proved me wrong. I don’t mind being wrong in these cases. πŸ™‚ Thanks for letting me brag.

Genealogy 101

Have you ever wondered about your ancestors? Do you look like any of them? Do you share any of the same characteristics? Perhaps the same type of hair? I think it’s kind of eerie how much the back of me looks like my great grandmother. She is the one on the left in the older photograph. I wish that their camera could have picked up more detail so that I can see just how similar my hair is to hers, but this is the best we can do.
I had never seen this picture of my great grandmother until my grandma passed away and we were going through her things. My grandma didn’t talk a lot about her life. In fact, my dad didn’t know how his parents had met until I asked her one day when we were visiting. I can’t remember the story exactly (which annoys me!), but he used to work for a casket maker, or something, and he would take naps in the caskets. His work was near where my grandma worked.
I don’t know much about either side of my family, actually. I wanted to know more, but I really had wanted to know if I had any ancestors who had fought in my beloved Civil War. I did find some on my dad’s side (I don’t think that any of my mom’s family was here yet), but that caused me to go digging away into my family history. I’ve been doing genealogical research for a few years now. When I discovered that the local history center was doing a Genealogy 101 class tonight I jumped at the chance to sign up. I should have realized that I would be the youngest one there… by about 15 years! Oh well. I’m used to it. lol
The Fenton History Center puts on various programs and really is quite a treasure in the community. Reuben Fenton, governor of NY State from 1865 to 1869 and one of the founders of the Republican Party, lived in Jamestown. His mansion that he had built in 1863 is now the home of the local history center. They have a very nice research library with a ton of sources, both local and not-so-local. I would really like to get back into researching my family, but I don’t really have the time or space for it right now. Once I move to my new place I will be a LOT closer and can spend more time working on it.
I have an ancestor from my paternal grandmother’s side who was kidnapped by Mohawk Indians when he was around the age of 8. They took him across the border into Canada where they held him hostage with some other people. Somehow he managed to escape after something along the lines of 6 months and he managed to find his way back to his village. Can you imagine an 8 year old doing that now??!! The problem is that I can’t recall where I found this information so I need to find it again.
Here’s one last comparison with which to leave you. On the left is a picture of my dad when he was young. On the right is a picture of me and my dad when I was young. Can you see the resemblance between the two of us when we were both young?? I definitely don’t have to worry about being adopted. πŸ˜‰
