The Wedding That Didn’t Take Place

*The events in this blog post actually occurred, but names, places, and pictures have been changed in order to protect the innocent. *

This weekend I attended a non-descript wedding at a very boring place. I traveled to Altoona, PA for this Wiccan ceremony. It was a wedding for Jay’s step-niece and I was very much looking forward to attending it. I got all dolled up and we headed to the church. After parking the car we walked around the front of the church, climbed the stairs, entered the church and immediately we were stopped.

“Names??” Umm… Jay HotPants. *checks the clipboard* “Okay. Your name?” I looked at the woman and told her Kerry LeBeau. She checks and asks me again. I tell her again. Jay is looking at her clipboard and spots my name… with my last name spelled incorrectly! He tries to point it out to her, but she hugs the clipboard to her chest. Jay tries to peel it away so that he can show her, after she asks me how to spell it and I refrain from saying “I-T”. Suddenly another guy appears.

“Is everything okay?” he asks? Before he can get it all out, though, one of Jay’s relatives comes running up and says “They’re fine!” What was all of this about?? It turns out that the groom is part of a bureau and has a job that he’s not allowed to tell anybody what he does. I like to picture him as Jack Ryan from the Tom Clancy novels, but I’ve been told that it’s the wrong service. It doesn’t matter to me.

We get seated and Jay looks around. “They’ve got a sniper in the choir loft!” he says:

I looked, but didn’t see anything. Just the organist. As we waited for the show to start Jay filled me in on the whole service thing and how pictures weren’t allowed to be taken. There was a special photographer who was contracted to take pictures, and that was it (his identity has been concealed for his own protection).

Finally Canon in D started and the girls started walking down the aisle in their beautiful red gowns with bouquets of white flowers.

Then the Trumpet Voluntary started up, we all stood up, and watched the gorgeous bride walk down the aisle.

It was a beautiful ceremony! The witch doctor who performed the ceremony did an excellent job. He was funny without being obnoxious. The bride carried a bouquet of about 2 dozen deep red roses. Gorgeous! We then were asked to recess down the aisle before the bride and groom did. We were confused, but did as we were asked. Since this wedding took place during a darker time of the day, we were given lit candles to hold as the bride, groom, and party walked out of the church and into the limo. Come to think of it, we were probably being used as human shields.

We arrive at the reception and there is cocktail hour. I thought that I was going to get hassled at the door again, but we were recognized from the ceremony and were let in without any issue. It was here that I noticed a disturbing trend. It seems that I have completely fallen out of fashion! What happens is that you’re supposed to wear beige stilettoes with your short, tight black dress!

I had no idea! Silly me wore tasteful black flats. And a longer dress without a plunging neckline. It was also at the cocktail hour that I noticed my name spelled incorrectly yet again. Apparently it was a theme at the wedding. lol.

We were waiting in line for something to drink when one of Jay’s cousins came up to him and asked if Jay was going to bring some more planes to destroy at the Labor Day picnic next year. Now, you might recall my story of how Jay completely split one of his jets in two by snagging an overhead wire. Without thinking Jay says to his cousin, “Yeah, I have a couple of jets for you guys to destroy. Make sure to bring plenty of ammunition!” You can imagine the number of ‘official’ heads turning at that comment!

Yet again we were reminded that we couldn’t take pictures nor do much of anything. Every time you stood up and walked around you had eyes on you. It was kind of disturbing. Jay and I finally left at 10 because we were both tired and the dancing hadn’t even started! Luckily, I was able to get somebody to take our picture as we were heading out:

Warthog Project 11-6-11

The 12 hour shifts are starting to catch up with us. Between working and sleeping, it doesn’t leave much time for anything else. However, a little progress has been made. Jay was busy this week in his spare time. Do you remember how the wing spars looked last weekend?

This week the delicate procedure of actually inserting it into the wing commenced. Now, keep in mind, once everything is done the jet and wings will be glassed so you won’t see any of the ‘ugly’ patches. Here’s the installed spar:

I think that it looks really good. It looks a lot better than what I could have done! This morning the left wing spar was installed. This is really tough because you need to make sure that everything lines up perfectly! I keep telling Jay that he’s damn good, but I don’t think he believes me.

The left wing spar last weekend:

A wing spar this weekend:

The bubbled-up stuff is glue that will be cleaned up once everything has fully set.

The other thing that was worked on this weekend was the tail thing. Now, Jay will laugh at my description and so I’m partially doing this for his reaction, but the other part is that I don’t want to start tossing terms out there thinking that I’m right and then finding out later I was completely wrong! lol. Also, I’m not sure how to spell most of the words. 😉

So, this is what the tail thing looked like last weekend:

The blue tape was holding the steering devices onto the tail thing. These were hinged today:

Don’t they look so much prettier?? I like blue, but the tape wouldn’t make a good hinge for the steering device.

The last thing that was worked on this week were the shoes. Okay, so that’s not the proper term for them. They are canoes or something like that (I’m a bit tired so not sure if I’m remembering correctly). Either way, they look like shoes to me. lol. They go on the wings:

Don’t they look like slippers?? I think so. :-p

What else was accomplished? LOTS. Here’s a shelf that was put together in order to get some kind of organization done in the man cave:

The other thing that was built was a new toolbench caddy thing:

Isn’t it cute? I think so. Well, that’s all for the Warthog project this week!

Kitten 11-6-11

Yet again I feel like I haven’t had much progress on this piece. I was busy all week, and this weekend I spent Saturday running around and doing a million other things. So don’t expect a lot. lol

Last week:

This week:

Once I’ve finished filling in the ball of yarn I am going to start doing the outlining. That’s when you’ll really notice the kitten start to ‘pop’.

Kitten WIP 10-30-11

I didn’t think that I had done much stitching on my kitten this week, but when I just went back and looked at the pictures I guess that I have! This little guy is just too stinkin’ cute! It makes me want to scratch his belly. lol

Last week’s progress:

You can tell that he’s getting into something, but not quite sure what. Here he is this week:

Isn’t he darling?? Once I have finished the yarn on this half then I will go through and do the outlining. I’ve decided that I want to completely finish this half of him before I have to take the fabric out and move it on my hoop so that I can do his back legs and tail. I have stitched this pattern before, but it doesn’t get old. 🙂

Warthog Project 10-30-11

Another week has gone by and there has been more work done on the Warthog! Woo-hoo! This week was spent exclusively on the wings. Are you ready to see some pictures? This is how we left it last week:

Remember, only the wings were worked on this week:

It might not look like there was a ton of work done, but I hope that I can show you just how much work. Here’s another picture of the wings from last week:

Here is a somewhat close-up view of this part of the wing after it was completely covered:

This picture is also showing the wing spar that Jay designed and built for this jet. You see, the instructions say that you’re supposed to construct the wing all in one piece. What?! How in the world are you supposed to store or transport this jet if the wing is all in one piece?? I was helping Jay mock the wing together and the darned thing was taller than me, and I’m 5’10”.  I had Jay put his arm next to the wing so that you can kind of get an idea as to how long just half of it is (he refused to get completely in the picture because he didn’t want my female friends beating down his door and trying to woo him away from me… lol):

They say that the length of your arm from your fingertips to the middle of your chest is about three feet long. So, that shows you how long just one wing is. This thing is going to be huge!

Anyway, I was talking about the spar. Here’s another picture of it close up:

In this picture it’s all together. If you scroll back up you can see that it’s in three different pieces. You have the long piece that fits into the section of wing that goes directly under the fuselage (not sure if I spelled that correctly), and then a piece in each wing that will slide into the main part and connect them to each other.

See how that will work? The long, thin part that is sticking out over the middle of the wing fits right into the bracket of the spar:

Isn’t that pretty?? Isn’t Jay so smart!

Here’s how we left it tonight:

I can’t wait to see what next week’s post will hold!

"Maid to Match"

It has been a while since I’ve actually read a book straight through. I’ve got quite a few started, but I always get sidetracked and leave them sitting around with bookmarks waiting for me to return to them. Last weekend I decided to take an easy read with me to Jay’s because I thought that I might have some down time. I am a morning person, and Jay tends to sleep in later than me, so I spent a few hours reading this last weekend. It surprised me that I was able to breeze through 200 pages without any problems.

“Maid to Match” is about an 18 year old parlor maid for the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. She is up for the position of Lady’s Maid for Mrs. Vanderbilt, which has been her ultimate goal in life. Her mother trained her for this position and she knew that it would be a great opportunity. Tillie, as she is called in the book, wants to travel and see new things that she’s only read about. It’s the late 1800’s and people don’t often travel beyond their own small town. Since this is a romance novel (without any graphic scenes) you know that there’s going to be a monkey wrench tossed into her plans. And it arrives in the form of Mack Danver. I don’t even have to describe him to you because you already know that he’s an Adonis. He is, of course, the most gorgeous guy with a killer body and the perfect combination of stormy moodiness to drive any heroine crazy.

I don’t have to tell you the story because you know very well how it goes. It’s your typical romance. When I had finished reading it I was disgusted because things like that don’t happen in real life. And even if they did, what good does it do me to read it? After all, I’m not a tiny petite gorgeous woman who somehow manages to hide her beauty from almost all men (though she doesn’t realize how pretty she is) until the Man of the Year comes into her life. Most of the time I just get irritated by the leading woman because she does some really dumb things. Tillie wasn’t too bad, though. In fact, she was better than most.

The thing that really struck me about the book was the mindset of the characters. The fact that the mother started training her daughter to be a lady’s maid from an early age really got to me. I realize that back in the 1800’s most women only aspired to be wives and mothers. I suppose that I should be happy that the mother was actually teaching her daughter how to do something in order to make her own way in the world, instead of grooming her daughter to catch a rich husband.

The other thought that hit me while I was reading this was the fact that they considered Mrs. Vanderbilt to be almost like royalty. That thought led me to thinking about princesses and how almost every little girl grows up wanting to be one, and yet this girl was raised with the dream of being a servant for a princess (of sorts). That led me to thinking about those dumb Occupy Wall Street people. They want everybody to live like princesses, but they don’t seem to realize that you can only be a princess if there is somebody below you to treat you in that manner. Otherwise you are all just a bunch of nothings. I hate to tell you this, but in order for there to be various classes that would allow for a rich upper class to look up to, you need some bottom feeders as well. Personally, I feel that the Occupy Wall Street people are the bottom feeders and they are just too lazy to succeed in the time honored American way.

Anyway, I just wanted to review this book. It’s not bad for a romance novel. If you are looking for something intellectually stimulating, then walk away right now. If you’ve been to Biltmore then it’s fun to read the book and know exactly what it looks like as they say which room the characters are in.

Warthog Project 10-23-11

Work on the Warthog has continued all week. I want to remind you that this jet is not one that you pull out of the box, perhaps use a little glue, and then you’re off flying it. This project is basically a block of Styrofoam that has to be lined with wood, shaped, glued, epoxied, and what-have-you before it’s fiberglassed and taken to the airfield for the maiden voyage. I will post the Warthog pictures like I do my stitching; first a picture from last week and then an updated picture this week. That way you can really get a good sense of how much work was done.

When we last saw the Warthog it looked like this:

It was just beginning to come together. A few of the parts had been lined and glued. Now, here it is a week later:

We have the beginning of the wings, the fan housings are built up, and there’s more wood showing. This weekend there was a lot of sanding going on as well. This thing is massive. I’ll have to take a picture of Jay standing next to it so that you can get a better idea of the size.

We’ll start at the front and work our way back. Last week’s cockpit:

Nothing too impressive. You can see that the inside is lined where the batteries will sit. Here is the cockpit this week:

Isn’t that pretty?? Also, you can see that the nose has been taped on as well. It doesn’t look quite as much as its namesake, with the stubby nose.

Like I said, this week the back half had a lot of attention paid to it. Here’s a better picture of what it looks like now:

You can see that parts of the wings are slowly being added, not to mention that the holes where the servos will go have been lined. Here’s a better picture of the wings:

I wish that you could see how Jay does this. He takes a piece of styrofoam and cuts the size of wood that he will need. Then he glues it and sets it aside until it is dry. When the glue has dried he then sands all of the seams smoothly and does any shaping that needs to happen. This will all be covered in fiberglass when it’s all said and done.

The last couple of pictures involve the tail part of the plane. Here is how they looked last week:

And now this week:

Isn’t it impressive how much nicer the wood looks? I wish that you could see it in person because it’s beautiful. The work that is done to get these just perfect looking is astounding. Jay really is very talented.

Now, I want to show you a picture of some of the electronics:

I can’t tell you what all of these do, but I can tell you that there are several hundreds of dollars sitting in that pile. The thing is, I don’t think that’s all of what he will need to fly this thing. At the very least, the batteries are not included in this pile.

Many people might not understand why a person would want to do this. After all, isn’t the point of a remote controlled plane to fly it instead of building it? Maybe to some, but to others half of the enjoyment is flying an aircraft that they created themselves. I am actually quite amazed by the whole process and the oodles of talent that is needed in order for this to look awesome. And I know that it will. I hope that all of you continue to look forward to the progress of this project. I know that I can’t wait to see it next weekend!

Kitten WIP 10-23-11

This week I didn’t have a lot of time to work on my kitten. I can’t remember what I was doing, but apparently I was busy. lol. I walked most of the week during lunch so I didn’t get a chance to work on it then, either. I did find a few hours this weekend to do some stitching while Jay worked on his Warthog.

Here is the kitten last week:

He was starting to take shape. You could tell, finally, that it was a kitten with his little paw raised. Here he is this week:

He has really filled in, hasn’t he? He’s got his pretty blue eyes and a mouth. I just want to pick him up and give him kisses! lol

More House Dreams

Today I signed the insurance papers for the house, so apparently I have a closing date of November 1st. My lawyer has yet to tell me that, but let’s not get me started on them! In order to feel better about the whole situation I’ve been trying to think of what colors I want to paint the walls; how I will arrange my kitchen; and where my furniture will go in the living room. There are a couple of things that I’m really looking forward to in my house.

1) The Library

Okay, so that’s not what my actual library will look like. Yes, this is the library at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. When I first walked into that room on my visit to the Estate I turned to my friend Sarah and said, “Sarah! Somebody was in my head and brought my dream library to life!!” Look at all of those books! Doesn’t it just quietly whisper to you to pick out a book and take a seat by the cozy fire? I realize that the library at my house won’t be nearly as wonderful, but it will be great to have an entire room to house my books. This is what my library looked like a few years ago:

I have drastically outgrown this shelf. I currently have two big plastic totes filled with books sitting in front of that shelf, plus 5 copy paper boxes that are also filled with books. This is all in preparation for moving. The sad thing is that I haven’t even started packing the books that are ON the actual shelf. Oh, and that’s not the only bookshelf that I have right now with Civil War books on it. I can’t wait to have all of my books on shelves!

2) Playing the Piano whenever I want!

That is, as long as it’s not in use for a cat bed. *sigh* Seriously. The cats think that it’s a large, good looking cat bed. They are always amazed when I open up the keyboard and they hear the noise coming from it. My giant cat bed currently sits in the living room so I don’t have a lot of opportunities to play it. It seems that either somebody is watching TV or else my dad is upstairs in bed (which is right above the living room). Thus, the fact that I can play the piano at 10 pm if I want makes me happy! The only ones who will complain will be Bob and Chester. And unlike kids, there’s no law against putting cats in time out by shutting them in the bathroom for 15 minutes. 🙂

3) A completely GLUTEN FREE Kitchen!!!

I can’t wait until I don’t have to worry that there might be crumbs in the mayonnaise or peanut butter jars. Knowing that any crumbs that might be on the counter are gluten free will lift a ton of worry from me. I will know that everything in the house is gluten free and I don’t have to worry about cross contamination or somebody accidentally using my toaster and possibly not telling me. Can you imagine??

Those are the three biggest things for me right now. When the stress and frustration start to get to me I just close my eyes and I imagine walking into my kitchen to grab my slices of GF toast from the toaster. Then I walk through the living room where I stop to give Bob and Chester kisses as they sleep on the piano, and then continue down the hall to the library where I am reading the latest book that has been written about Stonewall Jackson. Doesn’t it sound heavenly??

R/C Planes!

I believe that I might have posted a time or two about the very handsome guy whom I’ve been dating. The one who used to fly planes in the Navy; is still a certified flight instructor; is a parachute jumping instructor (whatever the technical name for that is besides “Insane”); and who loves to build and fly remote control aircraft. If that still isn’t ringing a bell, maybe this picture will (yes, I need new pictures…):

You might be wondering to yourself, “Self, just how many planes can one person own?” Would you like the answer? Many. Would you like to see Jay’s hangar?

HA HA! Get it? Hang-er… Phew! I kill me! *wipes tears of mirth from my eyes*

That is actually his basement workshop. Considering the number of jets that he has I have to say that I’m quite impressed with how he manages to store them. He builds his own storage units out of PVC pipe so it’s relatively inexpensive. Of course, I won’t tell you that some of those jets hanging on the inexpensive PVC are easily worth $500+. Nope. It’s not a cheap hobby, but I would rather see the money being spent on that than on drugs, gambling or alcohol. Call me picky…. lol

This picture is a little messier, but still has some organizational elements to it. You will notice the beautiful PVC shelf in the corner. There is Jay’s new Bobcat in the bottom left hand corner. The yellow one hanging on the wall is the plane that he was getting ready to fly in the picture at the beginning of this post. The red one on the bottom of the PVC pipe shelf is his ‘Fabu’ (fake Habu) with which he showed up some pretentious guys at eJets that he could fly just as well, if not better, than they could with his plane that cost a fraction of what theirs cost. The second one down on the shelf (the white one, under the gray one) he took to eJets, as well. This one he holds the record for number of times skipped on the runway during landing. That jet doesn’t have landing gear, so you have to land it on its belly. I can’t recall how many skips he got out of it, but other guys spent all weekend trying to beat him and never did. lol

Where planes go to die:

This is the dead pile. These need to be cannibalized for whatever can be salvaged, and then they get junked.

Finally, have you ever wondered what would happen if you hit an overhead wire with your Styrofoam jet?

This was a one-in-a-million hit. It was Labor Day weekend and we had gone out to his family’s camp for a picnic and fun. Part of the fun always includes Jay taking one of his jets and the family watching him fly it. This actually made me sad because this was the jet that Jay was working on when we started dating. I saw it from the beginning… and I was there for the end. This was quite the speedy little jet. He was doing fancy rolls and turns with it, and went under the power line. The jet had only been in the air for maybe a minute, if that, when he went under the power line and pulled up just a little too soon. It happened so fast! One moment there was a jet, and the next it was just a bunch of pieces flying in all different directions! Jay managed to hit the line on the end of the jet’s nose almost perfectly! The line cut the jet in half (including the electric fan!) and did a spectacular job of destroying it. When I saw it my heart sank! I looked over at Jay… and saw him jumping up and down in excitement!! He’s a realist and knows that you’re going to destroy your planes. That’s just how it is. However, he believes that if you’re going to do something then do it in a spectacular fashion, and by god he did! He was so proud of that one. I was amazed. Everybody felt terrible about it, but he just waved it off. It wasn’t the first one that he crashed this year. lol

Anyway, thank you for putting up with my bragging again. I will try to vary my topics a little. 🙂
