Friday Night Fly-In

Have you missed reading my posts about RC airplanes? I know, me too! In the winter Jay’s group gets together on Friday nights to fly their little planes in a local high school gym. With Jay’s work schedule, though, he has either had to work on Friday nights or he’s so exhausted that he doesn’t have the energy to attend. I had been looking forward to attending one of the Friday Fly-ins, so I was very happy when we loaded up the car this past Friday night with various miniature airplanes and headed out.

I didn’t know what to expect because I had only seen the giant planes in flight. Instead, they have to use little guys in the gym:

(It was tough to get shots because the planes were constantly in motion and then my camera batteries started to die).

On your mark…. get ready… get set….

GO!!

Can I tell you how hard it is to take pictures of white planes in a white gym??

Yes, there are planes in that picture… somewhere.

The biggest problem with flying in a gym is that your plane doesn’t have reverse. So, if you don’t turn sharp enough you run into the wall. And then this happens:

Jay decided to take the baby out and let him stretch his wings a little bit. Unfortunately, the baby has too much ‘Go’ for the gym.

Have I told you that Jay is a man of many talents? One of his talents is the fact that he can land a plane on the wall. Don’t believe me?

Isn’t that awesome? He makes it look so easy, too. I actually had a chance to try my hand at flying one of his indestructible planes in the gym. It was a nice, slow one that reminded me of a dragon fly. Yep. I crashed it. Twice. At least. *sigh* I don’t have the hand-eye coordination for it. I am happy, though, watching Jay do his thing.

🙂

Christmas 2011

I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas. With any kind of luck the family get-togethers were fun and not stressful. I took some pictures from my Christmas, although I just realized that I didn’t get any of me, Jay or his family. I’m not much of a shutterbug, so I hope that I can be forgiven. It never occurs to me that I should take a picture until after the moment has happened.

I am lucky enough to have some gift wrapping specialists at my house. This year Chester helped me. Her job was to make sure that I had correctly wrapped the gifts and put them into structurally-sound packaging.

Apparently this was VERY tiring work.

A lot of people measure the success of their Christmas by the number of expensive gifts that they received. I measure it by the enjoyment of the company. In my case, it was a VERY good Christmas. I attended Jay’s family events with him and had a very good time at all of them. I grew up with a large family and since the feud I have missed being part of the larger gatherings. Jay comes from a rather large family so I managed to get a healthy dose of that on Christmas Eve. We had brunch with his mom on Christmas morning where his aunt, uncle, some cousins and his grandma were all there. Then it was off to my house to have Christmas with my parents, my aunt Dianne, and my sister. Oh, and the Gift Inspector (who took his job very seriously):

One never can be too careful!

Jay really spoiled me, though. He gave me Glenn Beck’s recent book, “Being George Washington” even though I know that he doesn’t care for Glenn at all. Jay tried to outdo himself, too, by giving me a Kindle Fire and an iPod Nano. Both gifts which I have been faithfully playing with ever since. No matter how much I love my Kindle and iPod, though, neither of these are cherished as much as the wine rack that he made for me.

Isn’t it beautiful?! It’s made out of oak and he did such a great job on it. The joints are perfectly joined. The decorative pieces were beautifully done. The fact that he spent time making me something really is what makes this one of the best gifts he could have given to me. I didn’t know that I needed a wine rack, but now that it’s mine I wouldn’t give it up.

I wish that you could see it in person. It takes a lot of talent to be able to put something like this together. I have some experience working with tools, but I could never do anything like this. We all have our talents, though, and this is Jay’s. Well, besides his plane modification talents. I put two coats of poly on this and then stored the bottles of wine that I received as another gift at his mom’s.

While I’m on the topic of home made gifts, do you mind if I do a little showing off? I gave Jay’s mom a piece that I had stitched a while back. I did it using some silk floss that I loved and a pattern that I had bought because I wanted to stitch it, but had no idea who I was stitching it for. Here is what the finished cross stitch piece looked like:

The floss used for the saying is variegated, so that’s why it is different shades of purple. It’s not your eyes. I really liked this piece and decided that Jay’s mom needed it for Christmas. I needed just the right frame and mat for it, though. When framing my pieces I’m kind of picky. It has to be just right or else I’m not happy with it. I wasn’t too thrilled with the frame at first, but once I had it all together I was pleased as punch. What do you think?

Living Room Update

Hello! Long time, no see! I haven’t had internet at home, but I’ve been getting a lot done. lol With the help of my sister I have managed to get most of the totes that I had in my spare bedroom unpacked. Lots of stuff got thrown out and others are being donated. After all, I’m only one person. How many juice glasses could I possibly need??

Just because I enjoy showing the transition I’m going to show you the living room as it looked before the paint went on the walls:

To be a little dramatic I will skip the middle pictures and take you immediately to my most recent ones.

If you scroll back up to the first ‘Before’ picture my curio cabinet sits about where that paper bag is sitting against the wall. The room looks so much bigger without anything in it. Wow. I just noticed that my poor music shelf appears to be bowing underneath the weight of my books. Oops. lol

That is Chester in the picture. She is currently perched on a gift that I have to give my best friend, Pauline. I’ve asked Chester what she was going to do when that was no longer there. She looked at me and told me that I would just have to wrap up another box for her to sit on. *sigh* She’s such a spoiled cat! In this picture you can also see the wine rack that Jay made me. Isn’t it gorgeous??

I didn’t know what I was going to do with my grandma’s curio cabinet, but I had a slight idea. Well, as I was going through a tote yesterday, looking for something else, I stumbled upon some of my Lincoln memorabilia. That took the high spot of honor. I had also managed to collect a few sets of wine glasses (guess it’s a good thing Jay made me a wine rack!), so those went in there, too. Here’s a close up look:

It’s not the best picture, but it does give you an idea. No, Betsy Ross doesn’t exactly fit in with the Civil War theme on the second shelf, but I have a soft spot for her since I was born on Flag Day. Actually, I have a soft spot for anything patriotic, but I don’t have a whole lot of patriotic stuff. I’m not much of a knick-knack person because then that requires dusting. I hate dusting. I would rather clean a bathroom than dust, but there are some things that I just can’t resist and so I have some dusting to do. Oh well.

Warthog Project 12-18-11

It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve updated things on the Warthog. Progress has been made, but I haven’t been here to see it. I really wish you could see how big this thing is in person. It’s amazing to see it all put together.

Since the last time I posted about it the fuselage has been glassed and glazed, plus a few other things have taken place.

First off, the nose was glued on:

Remember the pointy things that go on the wings as a sort of decorative piece?

They have been attached permanently to the jet.

The other thing that has happened is that the wingtips have been shaped. This is what the shaped wingtip originally looked like:

The block of balsa wood was glued onto the end of the wing and then sanded into shape. What shape? This shape:

Another view:

Jay did such a great job on these that I want to brag a little more and show it off at one more angle:

Isn’t that pretty? Okay, maybe I should redefine my definition of pretty. lol

But wait! What happened while we had our backs turned? Jay and I became the proud parents of two baby A-10’s!

Aren’t they adorable? *sheds a tear* They grow up so quickly! Look, the adolescent warthog even has the same wingtip as its daddy:

The baby, however, is still quite attached to its daddy. What’s better than a piggy back ride from your daddy?

Awwww!!!! Feel free to share this with other people when they ask, “Do you know what the cutest thing is?” You already have the answer. It’s this! lol

Updated House Pictures

It feels like it’s been forever since I’ve posted on here. Or, maybe the fact that I’m addicted to the internet and haven’t had any access at home is what makes it feel like that. I will get internet access at my house on the 27th, but until then I have to steal time online when I can. I have been driving around town until I found an unsecured wireless connection that I could get onto. If this post suddenly ends it’s because the cops have come to chase me off. 😉

I moved in last Saturday and I have finally managed to get my kitchen under control. I didn’t do a lot in this room. I’ve basically just cleaned it and put my stuff in there. That doesn’t sound like much, but when there’s an inch-deep layer of dust and dog hair that’s a lot of work that had to be done.

Here is what it looked like when you first walked into the kitchen before:

Obviously this was when I was working on the house and this was the base of operations. It really drove me crazy to have everything all piled up and crazy like this. I have finally managed to get it somewhat under control.

No, it doesn’t look very different. Yes, the washer and dryer are still in the kitchen. We’re trying to stop the leak into the basement so that I can move the machines downstairs. Where the water is leaking in is exactly where the washer and dryer belong, so it will probably be spring before I can move them out and get to work on the kitchen. I have managed to make it my own a little bit. Here’s a shot of my counter:

Isn’t the snowman cute? That was a house warming gift from Jay’s mom. It’s one of the few festive pieces that I have displayed in my house right now. I’m too busy trying to get things unpacked to worry about Christmas decorations. Yes, the ‘GF’ on my toaster stands for gluten free. When I was at my parents’ that’s how I had to let people know not to use my toaster.

The entry way before and after:

And finally the view from the Living room:

Again, not a lot of change. The livingroom, though, has shrunk. It’s amazing how small it feels when there’s furniture in there.

The drapes are still in really good shape so I just washed them to remove the dust and animal fur. The litter box will eventually go in the basement once Chester is no longer afraid to go down there. *sigh*

If you’re wondering, the white ‘sticks’ in the picture are actually Bob’s eyebrow whiskers. It took me a minute to realize what they were. I was sitting on the loveseat and Bob feels that if I’m sitting then he needs to be on my lap. You’ll see pictures of that later. When my dad moved the piano in he told me that if I moved again he was NOT moving the piano. *Sigh* I guess that I should take up playing the flute or something. 😉

Isn’t Bob cute? This is his permanent position lately. He has become the Velcro Kitty. He’s not spoiled or anything.

Nope… not at all. lol Chester wanted a chance to get into the picture, too.

My House Progress

Finally I can say that it looks like I’ve been doing something at my house. I’ve been working there every night after I get out of my paid job. I’ve done a lot, but you couldn’t tell that I had done anything. It was starting to get rather discouraging. The paint has finally started to go up on the walls and the house is starting to look finished. Not all of the rooms are done, but enough are so that I can move in on Saturday.

I bought a vanity and sink this past weekend so my dad stopped by on Monday to help me install it. It’s so nice having a big sink in there! Just to show the difference, here was the bathroom when I first got the house:

Here is what it looks like now:

Not much of a difference, is there? 😉

The living room now has two coats of paint on it. The first one was a bit splotchy, so I did it again. I haven’t painted the trim, but it’s amazing what a difference a coat of paint will do.

Before

After

A shot of the front window in the living room

Then I decided that I was going to paint my bedroom blue. I picked out a color and put it on the wall, and BOY! Is it blue!! The picture really doesn’t show the true color. Think of how blue the caribbean ocean is, and that is close. lol

Before

After

Is that blue or what?? When I was painting I had to laugh because I had blue paint all over my hands and it looked like I had been murdering smurfs or something. lol My intention is to eventually do a ragging technique in white over the top of it to tone it down a little, but I won’t have time for that this week. It will have to wait.

A couple more before and after pictures of the bedroom

The last room that has been painted is my second bedroom. This is the guest room and also where I will be stashing my stitching supplies. It will have a white metal daybed in it.

Before

After

More before and after pictures of the guest bedroom (please excuse the drop cloths…)

I really like that shade of green. It’s calming and soothing… for when I need to get away from the Smurf Blue in my bedroom. 😉

Moving day is Saturday so I have been trying to pack my things, and even enlisting my mom’s help with that, but it seems endless. Even Bob has been helping.

LOL!

Warthog Project 12-4-11

It has been a little while since I’ve updated my blog because I’ve been busy with other things. However, I wanted to share with you the landing gear that Jay made last week. It was the only thing that he had time to work on, but they look really great. There’s a lot of little, intricate and detailed work that he had to do on them. First up is the nose gear.

This is what all of the gear looked like before:

Fairly plain jane and not really similar to what is actually on an A-10. That just wouldn’t do, so Jay added to it. I think that it turned out really good! I couldn’t get any decent pictures of it so you will have to take my word for it that it looks really great.

And this is what it will look like when there’s actually weight on the gear:

Like I said, these pictures aren’t the greatest, but you can tell that the gear turned out really REALLY good. I think that Jay is so talented!

Bathroom Progress

Lately I feel like I’ve been treading water when it comes to my house. I have done a lot there, but I can’t really tell (except for the floors). After I saw how beautiful my hardwood floors turned out, it made me realize just how much I hated my bathroom floor. Okay, so I hated the bathroom altogether. This is what it looked like:

The floor was gross. The walls were pink. The bathroom sink and vanity were tiny. The shower curtain over the window…. I hated all of it. I decided that I didn’t want to live with it like it was and since I had some time I would just redo it before moving in. I am going to keep the toilet and tub as is, I just wanted to replace the floor, paint the walls, and get a new vanity and sink. I asked my dad to help me with parts of the remodel.

We turned the water off, removed the sink, and put the toilet into the tub for safe keeping. Then I spent Monday night tearing out the old tiles.

The black is the adhesive for the old tiles, and the spots are where I filled in the nail holes with wood filler. The tiles came up easily enough, though the first one was upset that I was disturbing it so it decided to get some revenge. A piece of it tore into my thumb and now that’s a bit sore. Oh well, it’s not a true do-it-yourself project unless you have a scar to show for it, right? 😉

Here’s a close up of the floor:

I used up the last of my vacation time at work to take Tuesday afternoon off so that my dad and I could install the linoleum that I bought on Saturday. When I had been in Erie with Jay we had stopped at a couple of carpeting places. I was looking for linoleum that didn’t have any kind of pattern to it. This way my dad and I wouldn’t have to work harder to make sure that the pattern lined up correctly. I knew that if it didn’t then it would drive me crazy to look at for the rest of the time that I lived in the house. Little things get to me like that. lol. The only vinyl that the first place had was the ugliest thing! I looked at it and asked Jay, “Is it just me, or does that look like a skinned pig?” It was a mottled pinkish-whitish piece with a bit of red and brown veining. It wasn’t pretty. He looked at it and replied, “I’m not sure what a skinned pig looks like, but I imagine that it would look something close to that.” Luckily at the second place I found exactly what I had been looking for.

It’s kind of a tannish-yellow with marbling running through it. It’s quite nice in person. So Tuesday afternoon my dad and I laid the vinyl flooring. It turned out pretty nice!

The new flooring alone makes a big difference, doesn’t it? I stopped for the paint after we finished putting the linoleum down. I decided to go with a warm white (it’s called Sandbar White) because I wanted the bathroom to look bright and clean. Also, I can change the look of the bathroom just by changing out some accessories. Tonight after work I painted the ceiling, walls, and the trim. I haven’t re-installed the trim, but it has been washed and repainted as well. What do you think?

The walls turned out to be almost the color of french vanilla ice cream. With the pink walls beneath, though, it gives it kind of a pinkish cast. It doesn’t really show up well in this picture. I did learn a couple things tonight. 1) I get bored very easily with painting. 2) Even though it’s not art class, I still suck at painting. lol I wanted to try to show the contrast between the wall and the floor (again, the trim will be installed later):

Do you like it? Is it too white? Too plain? I haven’t quite made up my mind on it yet. I’m not going to repaint it, though. It’s definitely done. lol

Silliness

I figured that if I used ‘Silliness’ as my topic for this post then I had to use a corresponding picture. This one does a pretty good job of it. 🙂

While perusing Facebook this evening I came across a post that had me laughing at the comments that were going on in my head. I thought that maybe I would share some of them with you. lol Are you ready? Here is the original post:

ALL GUYS NEED TO READ THIS. When she pulls away, pull her back. ~ When you see her start crying, just hold her and don’t say a word. ~ When you see her walking, sneak up and hug her waist from behind. ~ When she’s scared protect her. ~ When she steals your favorite hoodie, let her wear it. ~ When she says that she loves you, she really does mean it. ~ When she grabs at your hands, hold her’s and play with her fingers. 🙂 ~ When she tells you a secret, keep it safe and untold. ~ When she looks at you in your eyes, don’t look away until she does. ~ ♥ When she reposts this bulletin, she wants you to read it ♥. ~ When she’s mad, hug her tight and don’t let go. ~ When she says she’s ok, don’t believe it. ~ Call her at 12:00am on her birthday to tell her you love her. ~ Treat her like she’s all that matters to you. ~ Watch her favorite movie with her even if you think it’s stupid. ~ Don’t talk about other girls around her. ~ Grab her and hold her while kissing her in the pouring rain. ~ When she runs up to you crying, the first thing you say is: “Whose butt am I kicking baby?” ~ Guys: repost this if you would do it ~ Girls: repost this if you would love a guy like this… ♥

Now that you’ve read it I will cut it up and add my own little personality to it. lol

When she pulls away, pull her back. <– If she’s seriously angry I wouldn’t try this move because it might just anger her even more and that’s never a good thing.

When you see her start crying, just hold her and don’t say a word. <– This is a good one. Try it.

When you see her walking, sneak up and hug her waist from behind. <– Don’t do this if she’s carrying something sharp or something hot… you might end up in the ER. lol

When she’s scared protect her <– Or, better yet, just kill the darn spider so that she doesn’t have to be scared anymore. And no, taunting her with it is not on the list of To Do.

When she steals your favorite hoodie, let her wear it. <– This is actually good advice. You can score some brownie points with this one.

When she says that she loves you, she really does mean it <– As much as I would love to vouch for all women on this one, I can’t. This one is true for me, though.

When she grabs at your hands, hold her’s and play with her fingers. 🙂 <– First of all, I can’t stand it when people post these things and don’t correct misspellings or incorrect words. Shouldn’t this read ‘hold hers and play with her fingers’? I’ve never heard of ‘her is’ fingers. Man, I guess that I must be stresses! 😉 Also, if she’s grabbing at your handS then she has some issues. One hand, I can understand. But both?? Sounds like she’s a bit greedy and could potentially be high maintenance. Watch out for this one.

When she tells you a secret, keep it safe and untold <– I know that people are stupid, but do you really have to tell them that a secret is something that should be kept safe and untold?? Besides, has this woman not met a decent guy? First off, guys don’t say more than they have to and if they DO talk about something it usually isn’t going to be your latest secret. They like to talk about guy things… like killing deer, the football game, or farting.

When she looks at you in your eyes, don’t look away until she does. <– I’m really starting to worry about this woman! Is she psychotic? Should she be on some kind of medication? It would freak me out to have somebody looking at me in my eyes, at least if it’s intense like this would lead me to believe. Am I alone on this?

When she reposts this bulletin, she wants you to read it <– Because apparently she’s unable to tell you what she wants in person and instead prefers to play the stupid dating games. High Maintenance. Run away!! lol

When she’s mad, hug her tight and don’t let go. <– Ummm… what?? I don’t think so unless you’re looking to get hit with my fist.

When she says she’s ok, don’t believe it <– Because you realized a few moments ago that she’s a staring, psychotic, high maintenance wench. Besides, even the good ones are crazy. It’s true.

Call her at 12:00am on her birthday to tell her you love her <– WHAT??!! First of all, I would hope that I would be in bed by that time and if you wake me up you won’t like what you hear. Why does it have to be at 12:00 a.m.?? What if he works third shift and is in the middle of a production run? Not to mention the fact that this one is just dumb. Can you tell that a dumb broad wrote this thing on Facebook??

Treat her like she’s all that matters to you <– That’s a bit extreme. Just make us very high on the priority list and we’re happy. Don’t smother us.

Watch her favorite movie with her even if you think it’s stupid <– And if she’s a decent person she will watch your favorite movie with you, even if she thinks it’s stupid.

Don’t talk about other girls around her <– Guys, you can’t win with this one. If you don’t talk about other girls around her then she might think that you are avoiding the topic because you have something to hide. If you don’t have anything to hide so you talk about girls then she’s going to wonder if you secretly have something going on with those women. Why? Women are crazy. I can’t give you the answer that will work for this one. Sorry.

Grab her and hold her while kissing her in the pouring rain <– Why do people think that rain is romantic?? My experience has taught me that it’s not a good look for me to be soaking wet. If it’s raining then I am trying to get to shelter as soon as possible. If you stop me to kiss me in the rain I won’t be happy. Rain has a tendency to get on my glasses and that’s just frustrating.

When she runs up to you crying, the first thing you say is: “Whose butt am I kicking baby?” <– Here’s the perfect example that women don’t know what they want. If you recall, at the beginning of the post it said that if she’s crying you are just to hold her and say nothing. Suddenly there is a person who needs a butt kicking?? If she’s pissing off people to the point that you have to fight her battles for her, then you need to rethink this relationship. She sounds like she’s VERY high maintenance and a trouble maker to boot. You better get while the getting is good!

Guys: repost this if you would do it  <– Call me sexist, but I would definitely question the manhood of any guy who actually did repost this.

Girls: repost this if you would love a guy like this… ♥ <– I did not repost it. I don’t want a guy who is always controlling me by hugging me tight and not allowing me to move or walk away for a moment. Also, the whole pouring rain thing. I don’t like getting wet in the rain because then I get cold and snot runs out of my nose. Not very romantic.

Well, I hope that you enjoyed my internal thoughts as I read this. Have a great day! 🙂

Kitten – Finished!

I managed to finish my kitten quilt square Wednesday night. It was kind of a let-down because I had enjoyed working on him. Now I have to wait until I move before I can unearth my packed cross stitch stuff and figure out what I want to do next.

Here is the kitten last week:

And this is what he looks like finished:

Isn’t he cute?? 🙂
