Life

This has become the pictorial version of my life lately.

Here’s why…

1) It doesn’t make sense. Why can I stream Netflix, upload pictures to Facebook, and even play games online with my internet, but I can’t upload a simple picture to my blog??!!

2) At first things seem great, fine even, but as you dig down you see how it becomes more and more bizarre. Fits me to a tee. lol

3) It makes you just want to give up. *sigh* Life is exhausting me so please bear with my ranting posts until I can get this figured out. If I ever have TIME to talk with the tech people at my ISP. That’s impossible to do when you’re working 11 hour days without even taking time for lunch. Yet a certain coworker manages to find time to take his complete one hour lunch PLUS leave on time!!! I won’t get into that rant here.

Thank you very much.

Frustration, Thy Name is Windstream!!

Okay, get this… I was at Jay’s this morning and created the post right before this one. I had absolutely no problems uploading my pictures. I get home tonight and try to upload my pictures… same problem as before! They don’t upload correctly. How can I easily stream Netflix and Pandora using my internet connection, but I can’t upload a few lousy pictures to my blog?? I HATE LIVING IN THIS CITY!!!!!!

Warming Up the House

It gets cold in the winter. Really cold. I spend all day in a gray cubicle environment and then trudge out into the snow to climb into my car for the ride home. When I finally arrive at my domicile I want to walk in and feel enveloped by warmth, even if I can’t afford to heat the house to 76 degrees as I would love to do. The only thing to do is to cover up some of the hardwood floor and make it feel cozier. Let’s see if I’ve accomplished that.

Here we have my living room shortly after moving in:

Nice, right? A little plain, but what else do you expect for the first week in a new place? This is what it looks like after I’ve added some slip covers and an area rug:

What do you think? Does it look cozier? More inviting? Can you hear the love seat saying, “Come! Curl up on my burgundy softness, cover yourself with the Gettysburg afghan, and enjoy the latest Kindle book that you’re reading.” Can you hear it? Let’s ask Bob what he hears….

“I hear a can of food opening in the background… yes! It says that you need to feed me so that I don’t look like a little Ethiopian kitty… feed the kitty…”  Okay. Maybe Bob wasn’t the one to ask. Let’s ask Chester what she thinks of the new improvements.

“From this viewpoint everything looks great! Very comfy. But why is the couch upside down??” Silly Chester!

Dreams

Do you dream a lot? Do you remember your dreams?

I dream every night and I usually remember at least a few pieces of them. More often than not I remember quite a bit of them. One of the ladies at work keeps a dream dictionary in her office because she is convinced that dreams mean certain things. I agree that there is usually something behind them, but I don’t feel that you can open a dream dictionary and it will be able to tell you exactly what your dream means. I would be interested in hearing what a psychoanalyst would have to say about my dreams. lol. Would you like a taste?

This past weekend I dreamed that my ex showed up and managed to somehow talk me into having dinner with him and his mother. His mother is the sweetest lady and so I agreed. He made pasta for us and when I asked him if mine was gluten free he said that it was. I ate it and really enjoyed it. I asked him what brand of pasta that had been and that’s when he informed me that it hadn’t been gluten free. He said that if he couldn’t have me, then nobody could! So he was trying to kill me with whole wheat pasta. Luckily I woke up before the effects hit me.

The next interesting dream I had was kind of weird. It started out when I was in the middle of a run. Now, the weird part about this is that if you know me you know that I don’t run. At all. Yet I keep having dreams that I’m running as a stress reliever. This time I was on a business trip to Chancellorsville, VA. I don’t know why because there’s not a valid reason for work to send me there, but there I was. It was May and it was GORGEOUS! As I was jogging along I thought to myself, “I need to convince Jay to move here with me!”

The last really memorable dream I had involved Glenn Beck. Now, if you know me you know that I love him. I listen to him every morning and I have a subscription to his site GBTV. In my dream Glenn was in my area because he was doing some kind of a special here. For some reason I was picked as an expert for his show. I’m not sure what my expertise was, but I was just happy to be part of it. We were standing around, waiting for our cue to go out on stage, and he was complaining about all of the makeup they had put on him. I told him that at least he was comfortable in his clothes. They told me that I had to wear black slacks and a button up white blouse, and I wasn’t comfortable in them because I’m so used to wearing skirts most of the time. He was intrigued by this, but couldn’t really comment because he was being dragged off to somewhere else for a moment. In the meantime I was sent off to another room to eat lunch before the taping of the special began. I sat down at the table and the server entered the room. It was a girl who had been my high school class valedictorian! I was surprised because the last I knew she was going to college to become a statistician. She served us our first course, and it was this weird salad. We were in a pretty fancy place and apparently the chef fancied himself to be some kind of gourmet guy. I couldn’t eat it because he had used shredded wheat in it. The entree came next and it was a piece of sad-looking chicken and a piece of breaded fish. There were crumbs all over! Glenn entered the room and complained about the chicken (apparently that’s what every place served him on this tour) and so the waitress tried to explain that he could order something else. Except, she was using this really horrible fake French accent. I couldn’t take it anymore and said, “Jen! Stop it with the accent. You don’t need to try to impress us!” And that’s when I woke up. *sigh* I was enjoying the dream because a) Glenn Beck was there and b) I knew that whatever it was that I was providing to the program that it was something I was proud of and gave me a sense of accomplishment. Too bad my real job couldn’t do that for me. lol

Book Review – Learn Me Good

After I finished reading the Vince Flynn novel on my Kindle I was looking for some more light reading. I have downloaded quite a few books onto my Kindle (have I mentioned that I love this device??), but a lot of them are Civil War related books and involve heavier topics. I wanted something light and fun to read before dropping off to sleep.

As I was looking through the free ebooks at Amazon I happened across this one. I read the quick summary of the book and figured why not. I’m not a teacher, but I enjoy hearing the humorous things that kids come up with and this book definitely did NOT disappoint. I also found out that I had happened upon this book during a short period of time when the author was offering the Kindle edition for free. Bonus!

This book was HILARIOUS! There were many times when I found myself laughing out loud and scaring the cats. In fact, I tried reading a couple of passages from the book to Jay, but I was unable to make any sense because I was laughing so hard when reading it out loud. I was definitely disappointed when I came to the end.

I suppose you would like to know what it’s about? John Pearson was an engineer until he was laid off at the company that he had worked at for 3 years and 10 months. After getting laid off he decided to go back to school to get his teaching certificate. This book chronicles his first year of teaching through e-mails that he sent to one of his friends (and a former coworker). We are introduced to his many pupils (Marvin, Plakton, Sa’tun, MP, and many others), through various events that occurred during their school day. There was the day that Marvin got into a food fight in the cafeteria and ended up with fish stick in his eyebrow. lol. Or when we find out that Plakton is actually the kid’s middle name. He doesn’t like to go by his first name, Jobediah, because ‘it sounds weird’. LOL

This is definitely a book that you would enjoy to read if you happen upon it. In case you are unable to find a copy, Mr. Pearson has a blog that he keeps as well. You can find it at Learn Me Good. Definitely take a few moments to read some of his entries and even follow his blog. If you know any teachers you might want to pass it along to them because I’m sure that they will be able to identify with him at some point. Anyway, just wanted to pass along something that I had really enjoyed.

Warthog Project 1-1-12

I have been putting off the update on this project because I want to be able to show you all of the pictures, but it doesn’t appear that I can do that yet. I have NO idea why. I just successfully uploaded two pictures and now the rest of them don’t want to load.

The time spent on the Warthog, what little there was, was spent installing servos and wiring up the wing. If I am correct in my knowledge, the servos are the electronic ‘motors’ that work to move the wing tips, pull in the landing gear (or move it back out) and other functioning things like that. They are little square things that get their own little spot in various places on the plane. These are connected to the batteries with a LOT of wire. All of this wire has to be snaked through the plane so that they aren’t hanging out like a tacky price tag that wasn’t cut off of your new shirt.

In this picture you can see the servo next to Jay’s right hand, in the little well that he created. He is in the process of snaking the wires that will run from the servo to the battery. I think (and please don’t quote me because I could have this completely wrong) that the servo he’s hooking up will run the flap behind the wheel right there.

This is the only picture that I can get to load, so please enjoy it. lol. I really loved watching Jay as he wired up his plane. This one has so many working parts and other things happening that he has to plan it out perfectly how much wire he needs for it. He was very meticulous and careful, going so far as to label the wires so that he knew what went where. I was impressed! I’m sure that you would be, too, if you could see the pictures.

Jay hasn’t had a lot of time to work on the ‘Hog, though. He’s been building planes for others as well. He has a really pretty blue Panther (I believe that’s the one) in his basement right now. It’s almost complete. One of the guys who used to fly in his RC group commissioned him to put it together. It looks really pretty and I’m sure that it will fly wonderfully as well.

Home

When you live your life in one spot for many years, and then you suddenly move, it’s hard to think of your new place as ‘home’. I subscribe to the theory that it’s not where you are, but who is with you that makes it feel like home. I have been trying to cozy up my house to make it feel like my home… where I can come home from work, kick off my shoes, and relax with my cats. As long as we are comfy and happy then we are home. What do you think? Do you think that Bob feels at home?

I can’t sit down without having Bob-the-Amazing-Velcro-Kitty on my lap. As I sit and type this I have to sit all askew because Bob is on my lap and therefore the laptop gets pushed off to the side. *sigh* Silly cat!

My home felt extra cozy this weekend. Jay came over and brought some of his airplane stuff to work on. I wish that I had taken pictures of him working on it, all spread out. My parents had an old coffee table that was beat up and they didn’t want, so I brought it over here and told Jay that he could use it as a work bench. It worked out nicely for him. I store it over by the front door (which I don’t use) when he’s not here. He has already left this afternoon so that he could go home and get ready for work, and my house feels empty. 😦 Perhaps I’m spoiling him by letting him spread all of his stuff out all over to work on, but it feels like home to me.

Growing up our house was never pristine. It was always well-lived in and comfortable. You weren’t on edge that you might mess something up. You weren’t worried if you accidentally spilled something. That stuff can be cleaned up. Even though it’s just me and my cats at my house, I follow the same philosophy. My house doesn’t have to be pristine. It has to be clean enough to be comfortable (no visible hair balls, dusting done biweekly and vacuuming done weekly), but I’m not going to kill myself trying to keep everything perfect. That’s not who I am and it’s impossible to do that with cats anyway. lol

The moral of my story? I guess that I don’t really have one. I just felt like rambling. Also, I was testing out my ability to post pictures. I could post one, but not any of the others I tried. *sigh*

Trying to Update

I wanted to let you know that I haven’t been ignoring my blog. I’ve been trying to upload pictures to my blog so that I can show you the updates on both my house and Jay’s A-10 Warthog. Unfortunately, this is what I get:

That is not how it appears on my camera nor in my file on my computer. So until I can figure out what’s going on I won’t be posting updates. 😦

Book Review – Transfer of Power

This was the first book that I downloaded on my brand new Kindle Fire. I really enjoy Vince Flynn’s writing so I knew that I would enjoy this book. If you’ve ever read any of Tom Clancy’s books, then you will probably enjoy these books as well.

Vince Flynn’s main character, Mitch Rapp, is a CIA operative whose specialty is the middle east. He spends a lot of time saving innocent Americans from the horrible plotting of terrorists. There are many close calls that keep you gasping and wondering how in the world they are going to fix the issue.

This was a book that I couldn’t put down. There were times, though, when I made myself put it down because I was so anxious over what was happening that I had to step back and take a breath. Jay laughed at me because I was on edge the entire time I was reading the peak of the action. I don’t want to write too much about it because I don’t want to give it away. All that I can say is if you enjoy a good thriller, a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, then any one of Vince Flynn’s books will do the job.

Book Review – The Friday Night Knitting Club

Before I begin this review I should probably let you know that I didn’t finish this book. You will understand why in a moment.

My sister handed this book to me and said, “This is really good. You should read it.” When it comes to books, she and I have different tastes. I typically read anything nonfiction, and mainly about the Civil War. She almost exclusively reads romance novels. One time I told her that I couldn’t read romance novels because they depress me with their implausible plots and the fact that none of that stuff would ever happen in real life. “Yeah, because 620,000 men dying isn’t depressing!” she retorted. lol

When she recommends a book I do my best to read it. I was really getting into this book. It started out really strong. Georgia is a woman who found herself pregnant, her boyfriend leaving her to raise the child by herself, and her only option appearing to be that she would have to return home to her parents’ house. Along came a woman who gave her a little nudge into another direction and before she knew it she was running her own knitting supply store. There is obviously a lot more that goes into the story, but I don’t want to ruin it if you decide to read it.

The fact that the author shows that knitting doesn’t have to be something that just old ladies do really appealed to me. Many people my age feel that my cross stitching is something that only old people do. Ha! I’ll be lucky if I can see the little holes in my evenweave when I’m old! Sometimes just because something is low-tech or ‘old fashioned’ doesn’t mean that we should let it die. I don’t know how to knit or crochet, but I would like to learn. I fear that some of these needle arts are becoming a dying craft and we can’t let that happen.

Anyway, back to the book. The women in this book are strong characters and that really appeals to me. They weren’t mousey little women like that pathetic Jane Eyre. There were a couple of things that happened that I didn’t agree with the author in how she resolved them, but they were minor things. Until yesterday. Picture this… I am sitting with Jay in his basement. He is working on one of his planes and I am kicked back on my chair, feet propped up on the washer, nose-deep into my book. Suddenly in a fit of disgust I close the book and throw it on the washer. “That’s it! I can’t read that book anymore!” I don’t think that Jay has ever seen anybody react in such a way to a book. I refuse to finish it.

Remember that I read mainly nonfiction. In order to enjoy a piece of fiction, especially if it’s not supposed to be Sci-Fi or Fantasy, it has to be plausible for me. This book went from being a good read about strong women, to an impossible romance. I mean, the father of the baby comes back into the picture and suddenly wants to be involved in everything. That’s not the part that got to me. After not seeing this woman for 13 years he realizes that he still loves her and wants to be with her. When she goes over to Scotland to visit her grandmother he follows her and ends up showing up at her grandmother’s. They were taking a walk and he was telling her how he really felt when I slammed the book shut. I don’t know if the woman falls for it or not. I don’t care, either. As soon as the author had him showing up in Scotland, even though he lives in New York City, that was it for me.

I turned to Jay and explained. I told him that I didn’t think that it was realistic for any guy to go chasing a woman overseas, especially when he knows that if he just waits she will be back. I mean, she owns a store in NYC. It’s not like she’s never coming back! So why waste the time of chasing her down just to proclaim your feelings for her? What a bunch of BS. Besides, if I was away on a trip to clear my mind and visit my grandmother whom I hadn’t seen in many years I would be PISSED to have him be arrogant enough to show up out of the blue. To me that’s not romantic. Am I too much of a realist? Am I too practical? I don’t know. Either way I will be handing the book back to my sister today and thanking her for letting me borrow it, despite the fact that I refuse to finish it.

If this type of story appeals to you, then I highly recommend it. If you’re like me and want a plausible story line then you should just skip it. I am currently reading a Vince Flynn novel (along the same lines as Tom Clancy) and I will post a review of that one when I have finished. 🙂
