I Hate My Dishwasher

DishwasherI know a lot of people who LOVE their dishwashers. I’m not one of them. After talking with my mother-in-law tonight it might be possible that perhaps my dishwasher isn’t working properly. The people who lived here before us had five kids and did not even know the basics of home maintenance. So who knows if they even realized that the dishwasher wasn’t working correctly!

I try not to use it because it never gets everything clean. In fact, I used it Sunday night because I had other things that I needed to do. I put a few things in there and figured that it would do the job. I was wrong. When I went to put the dishes away tonight I noticed that EVERYTHING had a greasy film on it! I ended up washing everything by hand anyways. I should have just taken the time to wash them the correct way the other night, I guess.

Built In Drying RackJay laughs at me because I use the dishwasher like a built-in drying rack. We don’t have a lot of extra counter space so it’s nice to be able to wash the dishes, and then stack them in here to dry. I figure that if it’s going to be taking up space I might as well utilize it. Right?

I’ve had people give me tips about how you need to soak the dishes before using the dishwasher. Or you need to scrub them to make sure nothing is caked on the dishes. This makes absolutely no sense to me. Why would I wash my dishes by hand and then run them through the dishwasher?? I might as well do it all once and be done with it. After Sunday night’s mishap I guess that I’ll be washing them by hand all of the time. It really isn’t worth it to me to have somebody look at it right now to see if it needs to be fixed.

Kitchen and IslandI had been asked for pictures of my new kitchen island. It was a Valentine’s gift from Jay. I hadn’t realized that I needed one, but we had talked about it at one point. At first we weren’t sure how we liked it because we felt that it took up more room than we wanted to give up, but after living with it for a while I love it! I find myself doing a lot of my kitchen prep at the island. I fix my lunch on the island. I used it to roll out my cookie dough the last time I made cookies. I didn’t realize how much I was using it until Jay pointed it out, but he’s right. I really do love it. WAY more than the dishwasher!

Kitchen IslandIt’s nothing fancy, but I like it. Jay had to assemble it (and he proudly told me that he did it without looking at the instructions), and it’s on wheels. I move it around quite a bit. The wheels don’t lock properly so Jay has to build me some blocks to chock the wheels, but other than that it’s great. It has a cutting board top and a little leaf that folds up if you need a little more work space. It really is wonderful!

Observing First Dates

Me and JayI believe that every good marriage started with a good first date. At least, that’s what I hope happened for most people. I’m sure that there’s the odd story here and there about how horrible the first date went, but they didn’t let that stop them. Jay and I had a WONDERFUL first date so that’s what I’m basing my theory on. 😉

The sole reason that I would entertain the thought of moonlighting as a bartender would be so that I could gather enough material to write a book. I’m not sure exactly what it would be about, but it would be hilarious and a number one best seller. <she humbly said>

At least one of the chapters would be about first dates. Again, I’m not sure if this would be a How-To book or just one where I write a lot of satire about situations I have observed. For instance, Jay and I love going out to restaurants, sitting at the bar and determining if any of the other couples are on a first date. Usually it’s not too difficult to spot.

Scenario #1 – He’s giving her his A-game and she’s wishing that her best friend would hurry up and do the ’emergency’ call.

Let me set the scene for you… It’s a Saturday night, the dinner crowd has thinned out so it’s mainly the late eaters and those who are pre-gaming for the bar scene. Across the bar sits a couple who you can instantly tell are not on intimate terms. She is sitting at the bar, facing forward, with her cell phone planted directly in front of her. He is sitting to her left, facing her, and doing his best to entertain and engage her with his conversation. He is all smiles and is giving her his full attention. She barely glances at him and instead spends time playing with her phone. Perhaps she was involved in a critical game of Words With Friends… one never can tell. She didn’t completely blow him off, she did chime in on the conversation once in a while, but for the most part she was only staying until they were done eating and then she was gone.

This is actually a hard scene to observe. You feel bad for the guy because he’s trying his hardest and giving it his all, and she’s paying scant attention to him. CRASH and BURN. We wanted to go over there after the date, give him a pat on the shoulder and tell him that he’ll find somebody. Poor guy!

Scenario #2 – She’s all over him and he’s just waiting for dinner to be over so that he can get out of there.

I wasn’t able to visually observe this couple because they were seated to my right, but Jay filled me in on the details that I needed. However, I was able to overhear the conversation (I couldn’t help it because they were RIGHT next to me) so I know approximately how it went. It was a first date and they had met online. There was some conversation about her family and her brother in the service. They discussed their spiritual beliefs, and then they spent most of the conversation discussing past dates and how they were each doing in the world of online dating.

The saddest part of this date was that you could tell, both visually and audibly, that the guy had checked out and was just being polite. Jay says that the guy’s leather jacket was buttoned up the entire time and he kept his arms crossed in front of him. The girl was wearing a low cut top and was very open and bubbly towards him. Even if they decided to date again I don’t think it would end up working out. Why?

Reason #1 – She tells him that she was raised Baptist, but now she doesn’t attend Church at all because she’s more spiritual minded than religious. She isn’t so dumb to think that there’s not a higher power, but really what is their purpose here you know? He chimes in and tells her that his entire family is Catholic. Ooops. He agrees with her to a point, but I think it was just so that he would keep from telling her what a moron she was (and she really did sound like one, as evidenced in Reason #2).

Reason #2 – The dumbest thing I’ve heard anybody say within earshot in a long time: “Whenever I see that somebody claims to be a Conservative I usually just don’t even bother contacting them because I feel that if you’re a Conservative then it means that you’re racist and very closed minded.” WOW. Seriously? I think that she should do some research and realize that if anybody is pointing out race or inequalities or even the unwillingness to bend it’s the Progressive Liberals. Let me remind you that in the 1960’s it was the Conservative Republicans who were fighting for equal rights, whereas the Democrats (Wallace, Strom Thurmon, Al Gore Sr) who were the racists. But I digress…

Reason #3 – Per Jay’s observation he said that he felt this girl would become a Stage 5 clinger. That’s bad. She was already trying to be as close to him as possible, with extra giggles and the attempt at sounding intelligent. However, I think that where she REALLY sunk the boat was when she said, “I have to tell you that I REALLY like you!” There was definitely some meaning behind those words! If the poor guy wasn’t ready to bolt by then, I think that might have sent him over the edge.  They finished their dinner (he only ate half of his) and then they left.

There really isn’t any point to this post except to relate a few observations that I’ve made. The next time you’re out at a restaurant take a look around to see if you can spot a First Date. It can be rather entertaining!

Work Gets In the Way

Cat TalesThis is how I feel in my cubicle at work… like I’m in this tiny box and I’m stuck. Joey isn’t stuck, and in fact most cats love crawling into boxes. The thing is that they are usually in those boxes at HOME. That’s where I want to be. At home.

Have you ever been somewhere you didn’t want to be and all you could think about is all of the stuff that you need to do at home? That’s how I always feel. I used to love my job. I used to feel like I was at least doing something productive. When you stop caring about the quality of your work all of that other stuff goes out the window. And all that I can think about is what I want to get done at home and how I could be so much more productive if I wasn’t at work.

I could be doing laundry, vacuuming, dusting, sorting through the totes that I still haven’t done anything with since we moved, washing the walls that didn’t get washed, cutting up the green peppers in the fridge for Jay’s lunch, working on the sewing project that I have, working on the various cross stitch projects that I have planned in my head, getting the Club’s stuff organized so that I can find it more easily, take pictures of some of Jay’s jets so that I can do a tutorial for them on my blog, go around and pull the various staples and nails out of the floors (yes, we still have a ton of them), and I’m sure that once I got home I could find more things to do. Yet, here I sit… playing with numbers… I feel like there should be some MST3K robots watching my daily life because Pearl finally discovered the one film that would truly drive them insane.

I will have to buy a lottery ticket, I guess. *sigh*

Weight Loss Challenge: Week 4

Me and Jay 9-15-12Week 4 Weight Loss: Gained 1 pound

Total Weight Loss: 5 pounds

*sigh* I know, I know… I’m not doing very well at this whole weight loss thing. Yet again my biggest problem is motivation. That hot guy standing there in the picture with me should be motivation enough, but he’s usually more of a motivation for me to sit and cuddle with him.

I know that it’s an excuse, but by the time I get home from work I don’t feel like doing anything. I’ve mentioned before that I hate exercising just for the sake of doing it. So I haven’t been exercising like I should. Once the weather improves and actually warms up then I will be more active, but in the winter all that I want to do is hibernate.

The fact that I hate my job doesn’t help. It just depresses me. And I’ve become frustrated with the choir at church, so when I get home from practice I eat emotionally. In fact, I’m sure that part of my issue this week was the fact that I indulged in two calorie-laden sandwiches because I was craving the carbs. Then I had a giant drink at dinner on Saturday, not to mention that I threw all thoughts of weight loss out the window when I ordered the wings. The bad part is that I gave blood on Monday so technically I had a pound of bodily fluids removed from me… and I still gained a pound. *sigh*

Please, can’t somebody find a way to motivate me??

Intro to EDF Part 3

My RadioAs promised, this time we will discuss radio equipment, the common mixing requirements needed, and getting reliable power to that radio system.

Starting with the simplest jets, you will only need 3 channels for control. Most small EDFs don’t have, and don’t require, a rudder. So you have real jet ‘bank and yank’ controls. Aileron, elevator, and throttle are all you need. Some jets fly with tail surfaces only, which typically are all-moving stabilizers. These provide all the control you need when mixed using the elevon mix on just about every radio out there.

As one moves up the scale the next control might be the rudder, with flaps and landing gear added. If a jet has flaps then ailerons will be incorporated as well. Some use flaperons, some are separate surfaces. Remember that as you are selecting your jet. The channels add up quick; you may be limited by your current radio. You can fly a simple 3 channel EDF with a basic radio, but even a mildly equipped ViperJet will need at least a 7 channel computer radio. The more channels you have, the less y-harnesses you’ll need. Some jets might use 2 elevator servos, and one might need to rotate the opposite way. Having an extra channel available goes a long way here. If you want the nosewheel steering to turn off when the gear goes up, add another channel and mix them in the Tx. This can go on and on. If you don’t use retracts (fixed gear or no gear) that channel can go towards lights, a bomb drop, etc, but if a jet is small enough to hand launch weight is probably pretty critical.

Reclaimed ElectronicsBe prepared to spend a bit of money on servos. EDF’s typically us micro or mini servos, a lot of them when you get into four surface wings. Standard sizes just won’t fit and are too heavy for the application. With jets the surface deflections needed are a lot smaller than one would think. The flying surfaces are more highly loaded, and thus that much more effective. Don’t go overboard here; work your way up, use dual rates and especially expo. I know, I know, “I have never needed that stuff before.”  I am here to tell you, use expo. It’s impossible to fly a high speed jet without it. The servos need to be small, but strong and accurate. You don’t want a full-flying stab to recenter to a different spot each time it moves. Hitec’s micros are a goldmine without costing as much. I use the plain jane HS-55s on everything from tailerons on smaller jets, to the flaps and rudder on larger jets. Even Hobbyking’s HXT-900s work on my MiG’s ailerons and elevators. You have to look at the surface size and the anticipated speed it’s going to see. Don’t skimp, but put enough grunt behind them. There is absolutely no reason to buy $60 digitals unless you are equipping a hot rod 90mm sport jet. Even then it’s just a matter of common sense. If the ailerons are an inch wide and 4 inches long, there isn’t going to be much load on the servos when they only move 1/8 inch each way.

Now let’s talk about powering these servos. This applies to all electric powered airplanes as well. Today’s 2.4 Rxs (ANY brand) need a steady and reliable source of power. This does not mean the ESC. You are asking the ESC to take whatever voltage system you are using and turn it on and off between 8000 and 24000 times per second. Most ESCs have a pwm rate selectable between 8, 16, and 24 khz. And you want that ESC to do this switching while pulling a large current load, say 90 Amps. Yes you’d get hot too. Then if you ask the same ESC to provide steady, reliable power to your RX and servos, your new EDF may be on borrowed time. The manufacturer says that it can do it. You see it work on the bench. You see it work a few times in the air. Then while flying one day, you watch your beautiful jet emit a pretty stream of white smoke out the tailpipe, and all of a sudden, you have no control over the jet. What just happened? Perhaps the motor had a bad winding and in the process of shorting out, the ESC, while trying to switch a shorted winding, decided that it had enough and self-destructed. Well, that one component was supplying power to your radio. It isn’t doing that anymore so your radio won’t be listening.  Or, the ESC got a bit on the warm side and hit thermal shutdown. When that happens all power going thru the ESC stops. So does your radio.

Jet BatteryThat all being said, I do use the BEC built into the ESC on 3s powered jets. This is
mainly for weight and space considerations, although I have set up some foamy jets with BECs just because. The reason one can get away with this is that the voltage differential isn’t great enough to cause undo stress on the ESC, provided it has proper cooling. Jets are nice in that they have access to a concentrated, high speed flow of air perfect for cooling an ESC. Above 3s the voltage differential gets to be a bit on the high side, and one is wise to add insurance. Remember, you can run off the flight pack up to 6s with the CC BEC. Over that, the jet will be big enough to handle a separate lipo for the radio. The really good news is that electric retracts are the cat’s meow for jets, and by using a 10 Amp BEC, you are all set to use the electric gear.

Jay's ThumbsLet’s talk for a minute about using your left thumb. The throttle on most radios has either 1024 or 2048 resolution, which translates into either 1,024 or 2,048 discreet steps of proportional control. That is an extremely fine resolution in which to control something. Don’t use the throttle as an on/off switch. Throttle control in EDFs is critical to component life, flight time and the sanity of your fellow fliers. Mixed throttle flying is the key. Your ESC gets the hottest at ½ throttle, so don’t stay there too long. Jets provide the perfect platform in which to fly a varied routine.

In the next go round we’ll discuss flying techniques, some dos and don’ts, flight patterns, takeoffs and landings.

Kavalier Project 2-23-13

My Kavalier 1-24-13I realize that it’s been a while since I last posted pictures of my beautiful Kavalier. There has been one change in the theme of the plane, though, since the last time I posted. Shortly after I posted about doing it in Miami Dolphins colors and honoring Dan Marino I learned that he had just admitted to having an affair and fathering a child… seven years ago. Call me silly, but I have a huge problem with admiring somebody with less than admirable morals. I wouldn’t condone cheating by anybody, and especially not a person who is looked up to as a role model. It doesn’t matter to me that he’s a rich ex-athlete. Morals shouldn’t be shed based on dollar signs. Needless to say, there will no longer be a ’13’ placed on this plane. I still wanted to do it in the Miami colors, but it will represent the team in general. So yes, this plane will probably suck at flying. 😉

Underside of WingJay covered the plane with the colors I had chosen. You can see the underside of my wing, in all of its orange glory. There’s also a green stripe along the leading edge, but it’s difficult to see in this picture.

Gluing the StabilizerIt’s all in white… except for the underside. Jay has never covered a plane with the light color on top and the super-contrasting color on the bottom. I told him that I wanted the orange on the bottom so that no matter what color the sky was behind it I should be able to see its orientation as I’m learning to fly.

PilotI even managed to find the perfect pilot! A friend had given me a personal fan that had the Miami Dolphins colors and this little guy sitting on top. The fan didn’t work so we pried the football player off and saved him for this. I think that he will enjoy the view from here rather than my sweaty face. lol

Miami Colors! Here’s a better picture of the color contrasts. Jay really wasn’t sure what to expect when I told him that I wanted the plane covered in orange, white and aqua, but I think that after this plane he might be quicker to go with my theme ideas. (Remember the Watermelon?)

I decided that I wouldn’t be able to cut out the Dolphins logo or name in the exact way that it should be displayed, so we cheated. We went to the local sports fan shop and bought stickers that people usually put on their cars. Are you ready for the unveil??

Miami KavalierTAAA-DAAAA!!!! Isn’t it pretty?? Usually my theory is that less is better (unless we’re talking sweet tea… then ignore that previous statement). I didn’t want it to be annoying. I wanted it to be kind of like me… from a distance it looks like any other plane and it’s not until you get up close that you can see the interesting parts. 🙂

Kavalier WingI did a little happy dance when I saw all of the stickers applied and the nose on it. I can’t wait to get it up in the air!

Kavalier FuselageEven the sticker on the fuselage looks good. I’m currently on the search for the perfect material to use for the wheel pants. I’m going to make them like the wheel pants on the LT, but they have to go with the theme of the plane.

Miami PilotJay even made the pilot a dashboard with a couple of instruments and a steering wheel. Isn’t that cute?? I didn’t want the poor pilot to be bored and feel like he didn’t have anything to do with the flight of the plane. Let’s see how the pilot feels about his new ride…

Kavalier PilotIt looks like he’s ready to see what this plane can do!! Hopefully he has his barf bag ready for when Jay maidens it. lol

The Kavalier is just about done. There are a few little details left (like gluing the canopy to the wing), but we could take it out and fly it tonight if we wanted. I’m just so excited! I can’t wait to see it in the air. Jay is going to set up a plane on the simulator that will fly in a similar manner to the Kavalier so that I can get used to it before the snow melts and we can actually get up to the field.

Don’t worry, though, just because Jay has finished my Kavalier doesn’t mean that he’s bored. He’s currently working on a Sniper that he got for Valentine’s Day. When I get a chance I will post pictures. In the meantime, Jay is being professionally supervised to make sure that he’s doing everything purrfectly…

Weight Loss Challenge: Week 3

DC KerryWeek 3 Weight Loss: 3 pounds

Total Weight Loss: 6 pounds

Yeah! I lost a few pounds! Woo-hoo! I wish that it was more, but I will take what little that I can get at this point. Beggars can’t be choosers… lol

Despite my gloomy mood last week I somehow managed to keep from eating up everything that I could get my hands on. I definitely wanted to, but I found other things to keep my hands busy. I also completely stopped drinking diet pop. I had a dizzy spell last week that I wasn’t sure if it related to my sinuses or to the artificial sweetener in the diet pop. Either way I haven’t had a drop of it since last week. I’m not sure if that contributed to my weight loss, but it sure didn’t help!

When the dentist pulled my wisdom teeth I should have had him pull my sweet tooth at the same time! I crave something sweet right after lunch. It takes all of my willpower to keep myself from going into the payroll guy’s office where I know he has a drawer full of chocolate. It is so hard! I keep sugar free gum at my desk in fruit flavors so I usually end up chewing a couple of those in the afternoon.

I have also been trying to drink more water, but as my husband can attest, it just makes me have to use the bathroom more often. *sigh*

So exercise and willpower are still my biggest problems. I suppose that I will have to deal with one or both of them soon if I am going to continue to lose weight. I must be doing something right, though.

Any tips on how to deal with my sweet tooth?

I’m ill??

Celiac KerryYesterday at Church they held a ceremony where the sick, chronically ill, and those facing surgery could be anointed and blessed. I always feel bad for the people who stand up for the blessing because I hate to think that they are suffering. I am so blessed to be healthy and happy without having to worry about chronic illness.
Or so I thought.
Later on I was asked why I didn’t go up for the anointing. I was confused. Why would I need to go up for a blessing? Was there something going on that I didn’t know about? It seemed strange that somebody would have expected me to participate. The explanation that I was given was they expected me to go up because of my Celiac Disease. Oh. Interesting. And yet somewhat weird. Why?
Obviously I live with Celiac every single second of every single day. It’s something that I have to constantly keep in mind when I go to ingest something, touch something, or watch other people drop crumbs all over. If I don’t watch what I eat then I can become incredibly sick. It really is not fun. So why wouldn’t I have thought about this as a chronic illness? I keep it in check so well that I don’t think of it as an illness. Do people consider their diabetes to be an illness? Maybe I’ll have to ask my dad about that one. I guess that it just seemed weird to me.
Celiacs spend a lot of their time wishing that a pill or procedure could be developed that would allow us to eat ‘normally’ again. Would I love to be ‘cured’? There’s no doubt about it. I miss being able to run through a drive-thru and grab a burger. I can’t stand watching the commercials for pasta on TV because it looks so good. Most of all, though, I miss not having to worry about what I’m about to eat. I don’t like being paranoid and keeping an eye out for any symptoms that I might have been glutened after eating out or over at somebody’s house. I would love to be able to share a piece of cake at a restaurant with my husband. And I REALLY miss soft pretzels!! I don’t like having to make sure there are two separate butter containers, one for me and one for everybody else.
With all of that being said, I don’t consider myself to be sick or ill. I don’t feel like I have an illness. God has been good to me. He has blessed me with a terrific family, with the most wonderful husband I could ask for, and some very good friends. I would feel guilty for asking to be blessed just because of my Celiac Disease. I would rather His blessing be more focused on the elderly people in the congregation who are suffering more than I ever have. There are so many who are worse off than I am that I feel I would be selfish to ask for a cure for my Celiac Disease. I would live with Celiac for ever with no hope of a cure if it would cause a cure for cancer to be discovered. But that’s just how I feel about it.
So am I ill? Nope, I don’t think so. I’m just living life as I know it!

Intro to EDF’s Part 2

Maiden Flight 2Welcome back. This time we are going to start off by talking about the various classes of jets. Just like anything else in this hobby there are all sorts of flavors from which to choose. The main breakdown would be foamies and wood/composite. Both types come in all sizes and models; both scale and what are called ‘Sport jets’. Most are ARFs as this hobby has been veering in that direction for some time. There are still some kits around, but one must look for them. I, personally, enjoy building. Unfortunately I don’t have many options in the way of kits for jets.

Let’s start with the sizes. EDFs are broken down into what fan size they accept. Most are in millimeters, but there are a few inch sizes out there. By far the most plentiful is the 70mm and 90mm classes. The latest in micro technology is in the 25 to 30 mm class, while at the other end we are seeing fan sizes approaching 130mm in production. Cost is not linear. The cheapest option is the 64mm foamy. The prices are higher for both those that are smaller or larger than 64mm. The 64mm won’t have jet-like speed or performance, but it will be a jet.

The 70mm class is probably the most popular in EDF as the comparative cost is reasonable. The jets themselves rarely go to $300 as most are between $100 and $200, while the fans and motors can be anywhere from $20 on up. The 2 most popular fans are  the HET and Wemo minifan. The HET cost a bit less, but both perform within a few percent of each other. These 2 fans have been around a long time and are guaranteed performers, bulletproof, and can really take a beating. Motors for either can be had for under $70, or much less depending on the source. HET motors in the 28mm (70mm fan) class are almost the standard, especially for the price.

Kobra Fan 3-18-12

One real problem with the 70mm jets is the space available for equipment, especially landing gear. Most of my 70mm stuff is either hand launched or bungee launched. The wheels end up being too small for grass, and often the structure just can’t cope with the loads a rough field imposes in both takeoff and landing.

The 70mm size jets will use anywhere from 3s 3000s to 6s 4000s, depending on the size of the battery compartment. Typically one of these will use between 500 and 1500 watts of power with just over 1000 being a fairly good compromise. Anything more starts getting heavy.

The 90mm class is right behind the 70s in terms of volume. The larger size opens up possibilities for less than ideal flying fields, and they tend to give more presence in the air. Also, with EDFs being grossly inefficient compared to propeller driven birds, moving up to the 90mm size gains some of that efficiency back. It’s better to move a larger volume of air slower, than to move a small amount really fast. Going to the 100-120mm sizes gains that much more, but the investment goes up substantially.

Fan choices for the 90mm start with, again, HET and Wemo, RCLander, Stumax, Changesun, and a few other odd balls. There is a move towards the quieter fans that have more of the ‘whoosh’ sound over ‘screaming cat’. The tradeoff is sound versus efficiency. You get one, you lose the other. An exception is the Stumax fans, but they are in a price class of their own. With the Stus you get both.

To power an average 90mm model consider the weight range. I have seen between 6.5lbs up to 12lbs. Take 9lbs as the average, and you thus need somewhere around 2500 watts to get you going. Yes there are jets flying on much less (and much much more), we are just using an example. Anyway, you need to get 2500 watts out of your power system. A 6s gets you 22 volts, so the amp draw comes in around 110Amps. That is a bit on the high side. I try to stay with 100 amps max. The price on everything starts going up faster than I like past 100 amps and 8s. So on 7s you get 96amps, and 8s gets you 83. Remember, amps=heat and wasted power.  The higher the voltage, the lower the amp draw needed to get the same result. Every little bit of efficiency gain helps here.

SEFF 2012 042Now we are getting aircraft of a large enough size to be able to mount retracts with decent size wheels. Good for grass, and with more structure, the gear stay with the airplane thru much more abuse. The 90’s are easier to see, easier to take out a distance to line up for a burner pass, etc. Landings still can be tricky, but some practice is all one needs there. The detail work on some kits out now is pretty phenomenal and they can be had for the $200-$400 range. Keep in mind this is for an ARF with a glass fuse that is painted and finished, and the wings may be built up or sheeted foam. New kits are coming out almost every day so there is no telling what may be available in the coming weeks or months.

Next in line are the 100-120mm classes. Here the selection thins out and what is out there is getting in the pricey range in terms of the jet and the stuff you have to load into it. For example a BVM Electra kit will cost $1400 alone, and that is before $750 landing gear, $1000 fan unit, radio etc. Fan choices include Dynamax (from the old glow days, same fan, but different motive power), Stumax, RCLander, Tamjets, and a few others.

Having attended a few jet meets I have seen the various sizes of EDFs and their capabilities. One would think that with a smaller field that is rather boxed in the 90mm class is at the upper end of the range that you would want to try to fly. Most EDFs are capable of at least 100mph, and some very easily can approach 160mph. If you have a total of a half mile for a field, you can see that one runs out of room REALLY quick.

Another thing to consider: Grass fields are not the place to try and fly an F-16 with scale gear. You must choose a subject that is tolerant of rough fields by its nature. Wide stance landing gear, lots of suspension travel, larger wheels, etc are a necessity. With well manicured grass, a slight wind in the right direction, and a healthy power system, a 70mm jet can get off the grass. In this case choose a jet carefully to give you every chance for success with each attempt. I have had a few that would go one day and not go the next.

The above is not intended to sway one away from jets, but rather give some ideas to ensure the best chance of success. These lessons have been learned the hard way at times. The reward for the research and work involved in setting up an EDF is seeing it whizzing by on a low fast burner pass, pulling vertical, and watching it go straight up while seemingly not losing any speed. It is well worth the effort.

SEFF 2012 037A note on speed… The primary purpose of flying a jet is speed and smooth maneuvers. A nifty little benefit on some jets is flying them at the ragged edge of a stall in slow flight. I say some jets because a highly loaded sport jet is not the airframe to try and see how slow it will go. A light, airy foamy is perfect. There are some things you can do going slow that cannot be done while on the step at speed. Add thrust vectoring to the equation and you have a whole new dimension with which to play.

Next time we will talk about radios and some of the common mixing options needed to fly some jets.

Weight Loss Challenge: Week 2

Airplane CookiesWeight Loss Week 2: 0 pounds

Total Weight Loss: 3 pounds

*sigh* I think that these cookies were part of my downfall this week. I love baking and I wanted to make Jay something that I hadn’t made in a while. Plus I had an airplane-shaped cookie cutter that I wanted to use. A good chef will always taste their cooking, right? And cookies sound close enough to ‘cooking’ that I feel it should count. Obviously the calories did!

This past week was a bit rough. My sinuses were wreaking havoc on me and there was so much going on that I was very grumpy. I didn’t have any energy to exercise by the end of the day when I did have some time at night. This weekend I didn’t spend a lot of time on my feet, but I wasn’t idle by any stretch of the imagination. It’s just hard for me to get motivated to exercise. I worked out to my walking DVD once this week, but that’s it. I shoveled the sidewalk tonight if that counts…

Motivation is going to be the biggest factor in this challenge. I have to feel motivated to want to lose the weight. Unfortunately, the feelings that I’m experiencing that should motivate me are just depressing me instead. I don’t feel attractive… I have zero energy… I feel like a big blob… and there have even been times when I’ve just wanted to lock myself away from everybody while eating what remains in the cookie container. I do have goals and desires, but sometimes it’s hard to focus on them. I want to look gorgeous for my husband… I want to look in the mirror and like what I see… I want to think that I’m turning heads because I’m so pretty and not because I’m so big.

I’m not very happy with myself and the fact that I didn’t lose any weight. However, I will look at this in a positive way… at least I didn’t gain any! There’s always next week, right? Oh, and does anybody want some cookies?
