Book Review: The American Catholic Almanac

As a new Catholic I look for things to read that inspire me and help me to grow in my faith. Since I didn’t grow up Catholic I had high hopes that “The American Catholic Almanac” by Brian Burch and Emily Stimpson would satisfy the hunger that I have to learn even more about how Catholicism encourages, inspires and fulfills others.

I hate to admit it, but I was disappointed. This book reads like a dry history text book without any kind of hook to grab you and pull you into each little story. I realize that this isn’t supposed to be a long and involved tale as you only get one page to tell each story. However, if you’re a good story teller you can capture a person’s interest with just a few sentences. I kept waiting for this to happen and it never did. The writing itself is fine, it’s just that I never felt pulled into any of the stories.

For instance, I am a HUGE fan of the American Civil War so I was excited when I realized that the entry on January 2nd was all about General James Longstreet. I read a biography about him many years ago and I had forgotten that he had converted to Catholicism. This entry, though, left me feeling like I was missing something. Perhaps it’s because the entry jumped around a bit. They begin by talking about how the Episcopalians in New Orleans would have nothing to do with him, even in church. They discuss a few reasons why the people of New Orleans felt as if Longstreet had betrayed the Confederate cause, then they jump to the Catholic priest who extends an invitation to join the Catholic church. Longstreet took him up on it and all we learn is that Longstreet “remained a devout communicant to the end of his life.” They go on by listing the positions that Longstreet went on to hold with the Federal Government, and then a quick explanation of how history would clear Longstreet’s reputation. The last piece of the entry is that Longstreet died on January 2, 1904 before he had a chance to see his name cleared.

Okay. Fair enough. All of it is true (mostly – there’s still a huge portion of the South who will never ever forgive Longstreet for his betrayals), and since Longstreet did convert to Catholicism then it does count as a story about a Catholic. I guess that I was just looking for entries that wouldn’t say that this person became a Catholic after he did all of this other stuff. I had hoped that this book would give stories about people of the Catholic faith and how that faith propelled them to act. We learn that Longstreet became Catholic, but how did that impact the rest of his life?

Perhaps the issue is squarely on me. The book says that it’s “A Daily Reader of Patriots, Saints, Rogues, and Ordinary People Who Changed the United States.” Which is true because it tells lots of stories about people, and then mentions that they were Catholic or that they walked by a Catholic Church one time. Again, I think that my expectations for this book were different than what the book was really intended to be.

It is interesting to learn just who was Catholic, or converted, such as John Wayne. Or to read about how the United States has really had a huge prejudice against Catholics for a good portion of our history. There were things that I had forgotten that I had learned about in history class, so it was a good reminder in that fashion. I will keep this book more as a reference book rather than one that I pull off of the shelf when I need a bolstering of my faith.

I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.

Winter Cross Project 10-28-14

Winter Cross 9-26-14Here we are again looking at this Winter Cross project. *sigh* This is the progress that had been made as of the end of September.

Winter Cross 10-28-14At the end of October I haven’t really made a lot of progress. I’ve only managed to get a portion of another flower stitched. There used to be a time when I could have had this project all done by now. If I wouldn’t take on so many other things then I would have more time to stitch. I know how to make more stitching time! This coming year for Lent I will give up housework…

Do you think that Jay will go for it? 😉

Jay’s New Router!

Jay in his workshopFor the past several months when Jay wasn’t working he could be found in his workshop. He really didn’t do a whole lot of flying this year. Why? Well, part of it is because he is spoiled. The other part of it is because his attention has been held by some rather fascinating toys.

3D Printing 3First there was the 3D printer that he received for his birthday. I have shown you in previous posts just how busy he has been with this particular machine.

Well, one day as he was looking online at various projects for his printer he stumbled across something else. It was a kit for an open-source CNC router. I believe that I started hearing about this in April.

Old vs New CNC RouterAs a reward for being cigarette-free for one year I told him to go ahead and order his router. That was the middle of July. In this picture you can see his original machine (yes, I said original)… it is sitting on top of his bigger new machine. He went from about a square foot of cutting area up to a full square meter of cutting area.

New CNC Router - 9-28-14This machine is quite large. He put it together out in the basement proper area, but it has since moved into his workshop. And it has not been idle. At all.

CNC Router ScrapsIn fact, here’s a pile of the scraps from his various projects.

Poor guy! Don’t you feel so bad for him? He’s such an abused and neglected husband!

CNC Router PictureIf you’re not familiar with a CNC Router let me see if I can explain it to you. You draw something up on the computer using special software. Then you send the electronic code that your drawing produces to the router, which has a smaller computer attached to it and tells it what moves to make. The router essentially follows the instructions that the computer is feeding it to make the cuts.

Here you can see that Jay cut out a long strip of wood after having the router drill perfectly spaced holes. This is for a project that he is making for a coworker.

Hershey Bar 1This was one of Jay’s first projects that he made with the router. My dad is a diabetic, but he has a sweet tooth. This is Jay’s version of sugar-free chocolate. It looks real, doesn’t it?

Hershey Bar 4Especially when you buy a candy bar at the store and use the outer package to wrap the wooden candy bar.

CNC CoasterOr you can make a personalized coaster.

CNC Jewelry BoxNot into coasters? How about a jewelry box? Or perhaps a recipe box?

CNC Router Clamp TrayYou could make a tray that holds all of your clamps for the CNC router.

CNC Router Cat HouseYou can even make a house for the cats!

Yes, he cut the pieces for the house out using his router.

I told you, he has spent a lot of time playing with his new toys!

CNC Router Cat House 2Jay even hinged the roof so that if the cats carried out their favorite hobby in their house (throwing up) that I would easily be able to clean it up.

Chester decided that she needed to be in the picture so that you could get a better idea of the size of the house. She hasn’t quite yet decided that she actually wants to spend time IN it. She prefers her paper next to it.

CNC Router Cat House 3Bob, however, finds that it’s a nice place to curl up for a nap. Especially when momma is cross stitching and won’t let him on her lap.

There are other projects lined up for the router, but Jay just has to have time to actually get to them. He’s been busy building a router for one of his friends, plus he’s got a new position at work that tosses him around on the various shifts.

Jay and Bob NappingAfter a long day of playing with your toys, though, it’s always nice to lay down for a little shut-eye. My poor boys! What a rough life they lead!

Library – Almost Finished!

Library CafeThis is my library. At least, this is how it looked shortly after we moved into the house. It had two green walls and two white walls.

LIbrary Painted Walls 3We decided to redo it when we had a new ceiling put in (due to water damage from a leaking roof).

So now we have two purple walls…

Library Ceiling - 4Then I realized that there is real wood behind the paint….

Library Wall Stripping - 2And I created a real mess because I decided that the paint had to go. And it went, though not without a fight. It really put up lot of resistance.

LIbrary Wall Stripped - 1But I am my father’s daughter and stubborn to a fault…

All that it took was a month, a lot of elbow grease, stripper, mineral spirits, sand paper, and a dental pick. Yes, a dental pick. It worked great to get in all of the little crevices and knots. I went to the dollar store and bought a dental kit that included the pick, a tongue scraper, and a brush. I figured that for $1 I could use them on my walls.

LIbrary Wall Stripped - 2I took as much of the paint off as I possibly could. There were some spots that I just couldn’t get. And there were other spots that were different colors because nobody had removed trim when they would change the wall color.

Library Wall Stained - 2Once I had determined that I was finished removing paint I put a light coat of stain on it to match the bookshelves. It really helped to warm up the room.

Library Wall Stained - 3Here you can see that the wall doesn’t match the bookshelves perfectly, but it’s closer than what it was before I stained it.

Yes, I kept the one wall white because it is actually that cheap paneling that you buy at the home improvement stores and I didn’t know what I would get myself into if I removed it. It adds a nice contrast, though.

Library Mostly Finished Wall - 3I put two coats of high gloss poly on it and I really like how it turned out.

Library Mostly Finished Wall - 2I had to hurry up and finish this wall because the weather was getting colder and we really needed the thermostat back on the wall.

It was a lot of work, but I’m happy with the results. Now I just have to do all of the trim and the doors…

Library Mostly Finished Wall - 1What do you think?

More 3D Printing

3d Printing Layer 1A few months ago I introduced you to Jay’s birthday present. It really is quite a neat little machine. No matter how many times that I’ve seen it running I still manage to get ‘hypnotized’ and end up watching it print something for 20-30 minutes.

Well, despite the fact that he has another new toy (which I am waiting to get some in-progress pictures before posting about it), his printer has not remained idle.

3D Printed CatapultHe has printed a catapult that manages to fling pennies clear across the room. And yes, I had to take a picture with one of the cats in there… it just seemed like the right thing to do.

3D Printed Phone StandHe has printed a phone stand. Actually, he printed a couple of these for his mom and one of her coworkers. It’s cute, isn’t it?

3D Printed TableJay also made me a little table to put my cross stitch pattern-holder on in order to elevate it for me. Isn’t he sweet??

He made it so that he can always print longer legs (if needed). The current legs are removable and can be swapped out.

3D Printed Drip TrayOur espresso machine drips from the frothing spout when we make coffee and so it was a bit of a mess to clean up afterwards. I asked Jay to make some kind of tray to catch the water. This is his design and it works wonderfully!

3D Printed Enable Button and TableJust for fun he made this little puzzle table.

His mother told me this summer that she needed to find my ‘enable’ button so that she could turn it off. Apparently she thinks that I spoil Jay too much! What did Jay do? He made an ‘Enable’ button to push whenever he wants something! LOL

3D Printed Enable Button PressedAnd yes, you can actually push it!

3D Printed Snowman and CannonThe latest projects coming off of the printer have been some winter decorations. Do you recognize this?

If I said the phrase ‘Calvin & Hobbes’ would that ring a bell?

Yes! It’s one of the hilarious snowmen that Calvin used to create in his front yard. When I saw this all printed out I bent over in laughter. I always loved the snowmen! Along with this one we also have the snowman swimming away from sharks, the two-headed mutant snowman and the snowman stuck in the snow after jumping off the diving board. If you’ve never seen these before do a quick image search for Calvin and Hobbes Snowmen and you’ll see a lot of them.

Enjoy!

How to Survive a Sharknado!

The world is going crazy. There are times when I don’t know if I should panic or if I should just let everything blow over and not worry. Well, I’m not good at not worrying so I decided that I should prepare myself for some disasters that could possibly befall me.

To help me be fully prepared I decided to pick up a copy of the book, “How to Survive A Sharknado and Other Unnatural Disasters.” I am so glad that I did! I had heard a lot about sharknadoes and I worried about what to do in case one hit my town. I don’t want my life to end with the “Jaws” theme playing and Mr. Shark eating Leg ‘O Kerry. I don’t eat seafood so I don’t want seafood eating me!

The best thing about this book was that it offered a lot of great advice for disasters other than just sharknadoes that could befall you. For instance, let’s say that the killer dinosaurs escape from the island where the eccentric millionaire had them cloned from an ancient piece of dino DNA that just happened to survive in a mosquito that was preserved. Let’s say that a T-Rex is after you… what do you do? On page 48 of the survival guide we get the answer: “… you won’t be carrying a weapon large enough to hurt it. If it’s intent on eating you, it will eat you. However, you will be killed by the coolest dinosaur ever. Most people go their whole lives without ever seeing a T. rex in person. Do you know how lucky you are?”

Wow. Where else would you get advice like that? Count your blessings and always look on the positive side of things! It’s a fact that in all monster movies the biggest downer and doubting Thomas is almost always killed. That just goes to show that a negative mood is not going to help you survive a disaster of any sort.

Now, if you’re like me and live in an area where it gets very cold in the winter you might be afraid that perhaps the creatures from the Ice Age could resurface and take up residence in your neighborhood. I’m always reading about various species that scientists had declared to be extinct suddenly show up as if it was a big game of hide-and-seek. Let’s say that you have an exceptionally cold winter. As you’re standing at your front window watching the birds at the feeder a giant saber-toothed tiger appears out of nowhere and completely decimates all of the birds. Now what do you do? How do you prevent the tiger from crashing through your window and making you its dinner? I’ll tell you how; grab your survival book and turn to page 151 “… try distracting it with a laser pointer. If the saber-toothed tiger is anything like your house cat, it will never catch on. After a while, you may even feel guilty making it chase that little red dot.” Perfect! Thank you, survival book!

If you’re worried about the future and are afraid that you won’t be able to protect your family should a megapython start terrorizing your town, then you need this book. It will help you to prepare for any unnatural disaster that you might face. When the polar storm hits, you’ll be ready!

Oh, and just so that you know, I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.

Winter Cross Update 9-26-14

Okay, so I realize that it’s actually October and not September 26th. Since that was the day that I took a picture of my cross stitch, though, that’s the date that is being posted on here. I didn’t realize that I hadn’t updated at all since the end of July!

Winter Cross 7-29-14This is where I was at the end of July. I was trying to get the background words all filled in around the cross. The words weren’t the bad part. It’s all of the knots that go between every word! I really don’t like French knots. Actually, what I do is called a Colonial knot and it’s still a pain in the butt.

Winter Cross 9-26-14During August and September I managed to find enough time to fill in the other arm of the cross and then do some more word stitching.

I also did all of the backstitching required for the right side of this picture. *sigh* This is taking me forever! At this rate I’ll be lucky to have it done and framed before Easter!

Library Project – Part 1

Library Water Damage - 2If you read my last post about my dining room, then you will already know that we had a problem with water leaking into our library. Luckily it dripped right in front of my bookshelves, but we needed to get it fixed. I was tired of living with a towel on the floor to catch the water whenever it rained.

Library Ceiling - 1It turns out that the leak in this room was caused by the same poor roofing job that caused the leak in the dining room. When water leaks in one spot you never know where it will end up. Steve, the contractor’s worker, did a good job on the seams.

Library Ceiling - 3They did not do such a good job, however, when putting the drywall up. To be fair, I don’t believe that this damage was their fault. This happened when they were taking the molding down so that they could replace the ceiling. The previous owners didn’t feel that you needed to tape anything off when painting, or even remove molding. So I have a feeling that some of the paint for the wall ended up on the molding and thus it pulled away with the molding.

Library Ceiling - 4They also marred the paint on the wall between the kitchen and the library. I hadn’t planned on repainting the library, but it looked like I wasn’t going to have a choice. Jay and I were discussing this when we noticed that it was real wood underneath this paint.

Library Wall Before - 4This looks like a tongue and groove bead board that was put on the wall at one point. I believe that this brown was the original color. Well, despite the fact that I didn’t want to take on another large project, I decided that I couldn’t bring myself to cover up beautiful wood with paint. *sigh*

Library Wall Before - 2This is what it looked like. Honestly, I never cared for this wall because it always made me feel like I was sitting in a room that had been built onto a house and they left the siding on what used to be the outside wall.

Library - Wall Before - 3Unfortunately, it’s a decent size wall and I also have two doors to refinish, too. These are the doors that lead down to our basement. One of the panes of glass is cracked so we’ll have to change that out. I will also need to figure out some kind of curtain to go on them since I don’t want to walk by and be able to see down into the ugly basement through the glass. Currently there is a really ugly piece of brown plexiglass on it.

Library Wall Stripping - 1So, what did I do? I threw Citristrip on the wall to remove all of that paint. There are times when I wish that people would save me from myself. I need to give Jay a rolled up newspaper so that he can swat me on the nose and say, “No!” more often.

Library Wall Stripping - 2This is how the wall looked after the first application of the stripper. Yes, the FIRST. I ended up doing two different applications and then following behind with an application of paint thinner.

???????????????????????????????I had Jay remove the thermostat from the wall and we proceeded to have one of the hottest weeks that we’ve had all summer. We put it back on the wall to run the A/C. Once we no longer needed it we removed the thermostat again so that I could continue working on that portion of the wall.

Library Primed Walls 1In the meantime I emptied the bookshelves so that we could move them away from the wall. I asked Jay what color he wanted in here, and we compromised on a shade of that color. I didn’t want that dark green to show through, so I had to prime the walls first.

Library - Primed Walls - 2Hey! There’s actually a wall behind the bookshelves! Who would have thunk it?

LIbrary Painted Walls 1Chosen color: It’s called ‘Kissin’ Cousins’. I’m not quite sure why. I’ve been throwing out there that the name of the paint color was a bit disturbing. When asked if I had a better name for it I said, “Unicorn Snot.” LOL Be honest, wouldn’t you rather have Unicorn Snot on your walls than Kissin’ Cousins??

LIbrary Painted Walls 3I was worried that the color might be a bit overwhelming, but since you can’t see a whole lot of it the shock value should be tempered. Because I’m removing the white paint from the wood wall we needed something else to help lighten the room a bit. We didn’t want to feel like we had shrunk the room or darkened it.

Library Wall Stripping - 6Here’s a bit of an idea what it will look like. Once I get all of the paint removed from the wall I am going to stain it to match the bookshelves. I thought that would be a nice balance to the room. I also repainted the back wall using the same off-white that I used in the dining room. I couldn’t strip that wall because it is one of those cheap pressboard panels.

What do you think? Will it be worth all of the trouble? Or should I have just bucked up and repainted the wood wall? If I had just repainted then my house would no longer be a disaster area and I could move on to other projects.

Dining Room Make-Over

Dining Room Before - 2It seems like Jay and I finally get around to our home improvement projects in August. Apparently we are so busy doing other things that summer starts to end and we panic about what we needed to get done. Last year we had our new driveway put in. This year we knew that we had to get insulation put in the ceiling of the addition above our family room and dining room.

Dining Room RagThis past winter we’d had a MAJOR leak in our dining room and had to call in a repair person the Monday before Christmas. We lived with this rag until last month. I didn’t want to do anything with it until we were fixing the rest of the ceiling. As you can see, it had been patched at least once in the past. We figured that when we had the insulation put in that we would have the contractor replace this ceiling at the same time.

Dining Room Before - 1We developed a leak in our library, though, so we had somebody come out and quote the insulation work along with repairing the roof to fix the leaks. It was determined that the whole roof over the addition needed to be replaced (which I had actually considered before the contractor got there to give us an estimate). You see, whoever put the roof on had no clue what they were doing. Things were done incorrectly, which resulted in the leaks. First off, it was an engineer from a local high-profile company who built this addition, which leads me to a very important home remodeling tip: IF YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHAT YOU’RE DOING, THEN DON’T DO IT!! THIS ESPECIALLY APPLIES IF YOU HAVE A DEGREE IN ENGINEERING OF ANY SORT.

The contractor completely replaced and corrected the roof above the addition, which included the insulation that we needed (again, the stupid engineer apparently didn’t think that a house in a very cold climate would require insulation between the ceiling and the roof). Along with that we had him replace the ceilings in the dining room and library due to the water damage. It was not a cheap bill!

Dining Room Ceiling - 1I decided while we had the room empty, and the molding down, that I would also tear the old nasty wall paper off and repaint the dining room. I had been living with the previous owners’ taste in tacky wall paper. If you look in the first pictures that I posted you can see the “wood” wallpaper. It was one of the worst wallpapering jobs that I had ever seen.

Dining Room Ceiling - 3The contractor’s workers, Steve and Shawn, actually peeled the wall paper off for me. They also started to smooth out the walls (there was a texture on them that I didn’t understand, but it had to come off!), but I told the contractor to have them stop because I would do that once they were gone. I didn’t tell him that I just wanted him to get the job done and then go. Steve and Shawn were very nice, polite and did a great job of cleaning up every night, but I wanted my house back to myself when Jay was at work. Also, the cats had to live in the basement during the day when the guys were here working.

My HandymanI believe there were at least four layers of paint on these walls, plus the top layer of wall paper. Jay helped me to put joint compound on the walls to smooth it out (I tried sanding it off, but that didn’t work). Then I smoothed out the dried compound as best as I could before priming it.

Dining Room New Walls 4It’s amazing how much better it looked with just the walls primed.

I concentrated on getting the dining room done first because most of the furniture was sitting in the family room, and it was somewhat in the way. Also, it was somewhat depressing to walk into the house after a long day at work and see my house all topsy-turvy.

Construction SupervisorsLuckily I was closely supervised to make sure that I was doing everything correctly. Here Bob is checking closely to make sure that I didn’t get any paint on the floor and Chester is making sure that I didn’t miss any spots on the wall.

Dining Room Done 2It took two coats of paint to get the coverage that I wanted, but I am very happy with the results. I used paint that I had from the last house that I had lived in before I was married. This is a nice, warm and welcoming tan that goes well with the darker tan that is in the family room (where Jay was watching football). I also painted all of the bead board and trim an off-white so that it wasn’t a stark-in-your-face white.

Dining Room Before - 2Even though these pictures were taken at two different times of the day, you get the idea of the transformation that occurred.

Dining Room Done 1With all of the nails removed I could now decide where I wanted to hang things. I wasn’t just tossing stuff wherever there was a nail.

To refresh your memory…

Dining Room Before - 3(I know, not the best picture, but you get the idea)

Interior Design ConsultantAgain, I had help with the placement of things on the wall. He let me know if the pictures were hanging straight. Doesn’t he look so enthusiastic?!

Dining Room Done 3Jay’s metal airplane now has a proper place. I tried to tie everything in somewhat. The light fixtures above the windows came with the house and they are a dull silver metal, which is why I kept the airplane in the dining room. I also moved the dull silver metal switch plate from the library to this room. And Jay spray painted the four-switch plate next to the door a silver to make it kind of match the other one.

The only thing left to do in this room is to get some new shelves for the inset shelving (it goes to the right of the airplane). The old ones were wood and very unevenly cut. I mentioned that I thought some frosted glass shelves would look really nice in there. They would go with the frosted glass light fixtures that hang over that counter. We also have to get the molding put up. Other than that, this room is finished. And no more nasty wall paper or patched ceiling! Hopefully this winter we will notice a big difference in the temperature in the family room now that there’s actually insulation in the ceiling.

Now on to the library…

The Rascal 110 Gets His Wings (Fiction)

Rascal Box 4-6-13Once upon a time there was a Rascal 110 who had spent a large portion of his life in a box. As he sat in the box he would dream of the day when he would soar into the sky. He couldn’t wait to do rolls, flips, and dives. He imagined how it would feel to go screaming through the sky at top speed, straight up, and how great it would feel as he tipped over and dove full speed at the ground. He would chuckle as he thought about how jealous the other planes would be when they saw just how low and slow he could fly. He would fall asleep counting the number of loops that he could do.

Rascal Fuselage 4-6-13Then one day he heard a sound of something being torn open… and then there was a bright light… and suddenly he was free!

Oh, happy day! He wiggled his rudder in happy anticipation. He could almost feel the bugs smacking his propeller as it cut through the air!

As he was being assembled he openly talked to the many other planes and jets that he found in the hangar. He told them of his dreams and the anticipation of that first flight!

The JetsThe MiG and the F16 just laughed at him.

“You silly Rascal! You aren’t a jet! You can’t go screaming through the sky straight up until you’re out of sight! You’re just a silly airplane! You were meant to glide high and slow!”

Plane Staging SiteThe Rascal tried not to let the jets hurt his feelings, but a tear managed to escape his eye. Okay, fine, if he couldn’t scream through the air like a jet then he would change his dream slightly. He began to dream of the beautiful knife-edge passes that he would do… of how jealous the other planes would be when he could hover longer than any other airplane in the hangar!

Jay's PlanesThe Edge guffawed from his spot on the wall.

“Seriously?! Dude! You can’t hover! And you think that you’re going to knife-edge, too?!? Wow. You are delusional! You are just an overgrown trainer. Get used to it. Here, talk to the kid, LT, about what your flying is going to be like when you get out to the field.”

Fashionable LT“Oh, Mr. Rascal! We’ll have a LOT of fun! We get to fly high and slowly drift over the field. Then we get to turn in a circle and do it again. The best part is when the girl who is flying us doesn’t set up for a good landing because then we get to go round AGAIN!! And if you’re lucky she will make you a spiffy set of wheel pants, too! You can’t have these ones, though. They are mine.”

Fun Fly - Jay's Rascal 7So, resigned to his fate of flying high and slow, the Rascal took his place on the field. He wiggled his ailerons, flapped his elevator, and began to turn his propeller.

His wheels left the ground and he was free! He was amazed by what he saw below him. He was way up there, but at least he was in the air instead of in a box. It was kind of enjoyable, and even though he wouldn’t be flying like a jet or a 3D airplane, at least he could enjoy a serene flight now and again.

My First CrashAfter he landed the Kid was there to chew his ear off.

“Wasn’t it great?! They won’t take us out very often, but when they do it’s always nice. Well, except today. She brought me down just a little too hard, so now my legs aren’t in good shape. But it’s okay. The guy is good at fixing us. He’s really a lot of fun to fly with, but he prefers the jets so we don’t get to fly with him very often.”

Fun Fly - Jay's Rascal 8It was time for his second flight. The guy was going to fly him again. That made the Rascal feel better about keeping his legs intact! He glanced over at the jets who were resting from the last exhilarating flights they’d had and the Rascal felt a pang of envy. He sighed, and prepared for his take-off. As he started to roll away he heard the guy yell, “Hey Sam! Watch this!”

Fun Fly - Jay's Rascal 2…. and he went screaming straight up into the sky! Just like a jet!! At the top of his climb he fell over, and dove straight down. The bugs were smashing all over his wings and wheel pants, but he didn’t care… HE WAS FLYING!!!

When he was doing a beautiful knife-edge pass across the field he couldn’t help but grin. If only the Edge could see him now! But the Edge was still at home, on the wall. And the Rascal was FLYING!! They said that it couldn’t be done, but he was doing it!

Fun Fly - Jay's Rascal 6After that second flight he didn’t think that he could get much happier. After the third flight he was sure that he couldn’t get any happier. Yet, each time the Guy took him up into the air he was able to do all sorts of maneuvers that he’d been told he wouldn’t be able to do.

As it got dark the Rascal started to get sad. He knew that soon the Guy would be packing him up and taking him home. Then there would be no more flying for a while.

Rascal Lit Up 7-30-13Or so he thought…

When the LEDs were turned on and he started glowing the jets finally understood what the Guy had known all along… this wasn’t just any airplane and this wasn’t just any Rascal 110. This was Jay’s Rascal 110 and it would do so many things that it typically doesn’t do (like 3D maneuvers). The Rascal 110 would go on to become one of Jay’s favorite planes to fly. The F-16’s and MiG slowly began to gather dust on their wings. Once in a while Jay would take them out to stretch their wings, but he never went to the field without the Rascal in tow. And that was just how the Rascal liked it.
