Sugar Control Diet – Week #1

Cupcakes 8-27-09Mood: Grumpy

Weight Change: Lost 5 pounds

New Mood: Not As Grumpy 🙂

Well… what a week! Things have been busy around here and at work. I was fairly optimistic that if I was busy at work then I wouldn’t have time to think about not being able to eat sugar. I was wrong. In fact, I was VERY wrong.

By the end of the first day I was grumpy because I can’t drink my coffee black, so I was trying to drink tea with honey instead (I’ve never really cared for honey). By the end of the second day I was completely sick of water and tea. By the end of day three I was in tears. My poor husband! He deserves a huge award for dealing with me and my craziness sometimes. He may be spoiled, but there are times that he really does earn the spoiling.

My personality is one that I like to begin projects, but I have a hard time finishing them. This diet is no exception. Like I said, by Tuesday I was done with it. It had been a rough day at work so when I got home and smelled Jay’s coffee, I broke down. All that I wanted was a tall cup of coffee with my usual amount of sugar in it. Actually, I would have settled for just a tablespoon of sugar in my 20 oz coffee cup. At work that day a lady who had been diagnosed last year with Celiac disease brought me in a gluten free brownie to try. I had helped her a lot with the diet and gave her copies of magazines that I no longer needed and so she wanted to pay me back. Those brownies are now in the freezer… waiting…

Jay loves me and doesn’t like to see me upset, so he was doing his best to be supportive. But it was a losing battle because how do you reason with a sugar-deprived, PMS’ing wife? He did a very good job in at least getting me to smile so that helped me a lot. The next morning I fired off an email to my friend and asked her for help. She came to my aide and got me back on the track of somewhat-happiness.

To be completely honest, the only reason why I didn’t cave in and have my sweetened coffee was because I had already posted on here about the diet and I didn’t want to have to tell you that I had cheated. So I persevered and kept going.

Kitchen StoveWhat I hate the most about this diet is that I can’t be as lazy as I would like to be when it comes to getting something to eat. On Sundays, between masses, I would often just grab a bowl of my Chex cereal and eat that before running out the door. Or some nights I might throw tater tots in the oven and just have those. I can’t do that as neither Chex nor tater tots are on my approved list right now. So my kitchen has been a disaster all week; dirty dishes piling up even more quickly, and the stove constantly covered with at least one pot and pan. And if I haven’t mentioned before, I HATE to cook! Actually, it’s not so much the cooking as it is the figuring out what to make. I told Jay that he doesn’t have to eat like I do, so if I make something ‘normal’ for him, I’m making something else for myself.

Friday night I made beef and gravy over noodles for Jay. For myself I made some mixed veggies (no corn, just lots of zucchini, cauliflower and green beans), then I simmered some diced tomatoes with tomato sauce and mixed it all together with a bit of the beef that I had put aside for me before adding the gravy for Jay’s meal. I wasn’t sure what it would taste like, but at this point I was just looking for ‘gut fill,’ as my dad would say. I was shocked! I really enjoyed it! So much that I had a second helping. Now, if you know me well enough you know how much I love my pasta and tomato sauce. Even though it’s gluten free pasta, it still is one of my go-to dinners. Well, I hate to admit this but I told Jay that the concoction I had made that night satisfied me as much as a bowl of spaghetti! The best part was that I didn’t feel any guilt at all for having a second helping. Usually I do because I know how many extra calories are in the gluten free pasta, and I know that it’s going to go right to my hips. Not this time!

When I got on the scale this morning I dreaded to see where the needle was going to stop. The way that my luck usually runs is that I would have gained 5 pounds instead of losing it. I really needed to see that needle move in the downward direction. In order to keep going on this diet it was the motivation that I was seeking. It was only five pounds, but I’ll take it!

One week down… three more to go…

Winter Cross Update 1-24-15

Winter Cross 12-19-14This is the piece that never ends.

Yes it goes on and on my friends.

I started stitching it, not thinking about the size…

And I’ll continue stitching it forever just because this is the piece that never ends…

(Ha ha! Let’s see if THAT doesn’t get stuck in your head!)

At the end of December this is where I was at. I had just started to stitch the words that run along the bottom right side of the cross.

Winter Cross 1-24-15And here it is today. Those words don’t look like very much, but there are a lot of stitches in there! Plus the French knots… and the spaces… and hoping that you don’t misspell a word…

Maybe I’ll actually have this done by June!

Sugar Control Diet – Day #1

Airplane CookiesI have a sweet tooth. A BIG sweet tooth! I used to joke that I wished the dentist had removed my sweet tooth instead of my wisdom teeth. Unlike most people, my sweet tooth doesn’t demand chocolate. Once in a while, but more often it demands sugar in the way of jelly beans, marshmallows, sugary cereal, cookies, sweet tea and my sweet vanilla latte every morning. Mmmm…

Since getting married I’ve put on a few pounds. I know that happens to everybody, but when you’re already on the heavier side it really doesn’t make you feel good about yourself knowing that there’s now even more of you to love. I’ve been wanting to cut down on my sugar intake in order to help me lose some weight, but there was one other reason that made me decide to get my health in control regarding my weight and my sweet tooth.

Father and GrandmaDiabetes runs on my dad’s side of the family. As long as I can remember my grandma had to give herself insulin injections and she ate a lot of really icky-tasting stuff. I’ve been told that her mother, my great-grandma, died in a diabetic coma. My dad is now taking pills to help his blood sugar and he has learned to watch his sugar intake. He has managed to lose a lot of weight and manages to keep it down around a healthier level. Knowing that this risk is quite high for me I have decided to take a proactive measure to hopefully help prevent the onset when I get older.

I am lucky because I have a friend who is helping me with this change in diet. She is currently working her way through the process of becoming a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. She originally went to school for hospitality (running hotels, restaurants, inns, catering, etc) and she has really become quite the foodie. Her passion in life is to learn about food and nutrition, and then apply it in her life to keep both her and her husband as healthy as possible. She experienced a time in her life where she realized that the junk she was putting into her body made her feel like a lump of goo, so she decided to change it.

Since I have zero interest in reading about nutrition, I decided to volunteer as one of her guinea pigs for her course work. This is going to be hard for me so I needed somebody who could guide me and encourage me along the way. After doing an initial assessment it was decided that I should go on the Sugar Control Diet for 30 days. This diet is meant to recalibrate the body’s sugar control mechanism, which is what triggers us to eat or snack or want another gummy bear. For 30 days I have to avoid all grains, almost all dairy, a good portion of fruit, and of course most sweeteners.

Once I had seen the diet restrictions I wasn’t too worried about how I was going to manage to follow it. I hate to cook, but since I have to eat gluten free I tend to do a lot of it. The diet allows me to eat as much meat as I want, as many veggies as I want, and I can satisfy my sweet tooth with limited fruit. And black olives are allowed as I can consider them part of the good fats that I get to consume. The only pitfall that I could foresee was my daily coffee… I don’t drink it black so how would I survive? I was given the option of honey or stevia, but told that stevia hadn’t yet received good reviews from my friend when used in coffee.

3D Printed Drip TrayI used this past week to try prepping for the change. Jamie, if you’re reading this… skip this paragraph…

I ate like an inmate on death row. The strictest part of this diet is the thirty days where you are eliminating a lot of things from your diet. I made macaroni & cheese for dinner, the next night we had rice, and for dessert I had ice cream. I snacked on little pieces of chocolate and ate my sugar-laden cereal for breakfast. The one thing that I tried to do was wean myself from the sweet coffee. I halved the amount of sugar I used for most of the week, and yesterday I used only a tablespoon or so in my 20 ounce cup. I stocked the refrigerator with fresh veggies and bought meat to stash in the freezer for meals. I can do this!

Today really wasn’t too bad. I didn’t expect it to be, though. I was fairly optimistic about things and keeping a good mood. Until I got home from the second morning mass (I play piano at two morning masses on Sunday, temporarily). That’s the time when normally I would make a cup of coffee and relax while telling Jay about how the second mass went, what pitfalls I fell into at the piano, and then talking about how I was going to be productive for the rest of the day. I tried making my vanilla latte this morning without the sugar and all that confirmed was that I am NOT a black coffee drinker. So I didn’t have my cup of coffee after mass. I thought about a cup of decaf tea with a little honey, but I really don’t care for honey. Also, tea doesn’t comfort me like the coffee does.

So today I drank water. Ugh. I like water, but I need something to break it up. It was so bad that I managed to eventually finish my cup of black coffee from the morning. And currently I am drinking a cup of tea with a little bit of honey. If I didn’t change it up my tongue was going to rebel. Seriously. Every time I took a sip of water it would say, “What?! Are you kidding me? We’ve already had a lot of this! I’m tired of it. Let’s have some coffee!” It would be a lot easier if the coffee/sugar made me sick like when I accidentally eat gluten. *sigh*

As I work my way through this sugar detox (as I’ve seen some people refer to it), I thought that I would blog about it. Hopefully you can at least enjoy a bit of my discomfort/misery!

Dresses for Missions Update 1-20-15

Dresses Group #1It’s been a while since I’ve posted an update for my Dresses for Missions ministry. Why? Because I haven’t hardly touched my sewing machine since June. Yikes!

Between February (when the ministry got started) and June I managed to sew 16 of my own dresses, plus I finished off about 25 additional dresses for the group. That’s a lot of sewing!

Then I got involved in redoing the dining room and library… then I had to start getting more involved in playing piano for the choir at church… and then it was Christmas time.

One of my New Year’s Determinations is to spend more time at my sewing machine. I would love to get one new dress done each week, but at this point I will be happy if I can manage to make two new dresses a month. Luckily my mom and sister have given me a TON of pillow cases for this cause. The pillow cases allow me to make a fancy little dress in a shorter amount of time. I’ll show you how in a little bit.

Dresses for Missions #17 1-12-15Dress #17 – I found this material in the clearance area at Hobby Lobby. Immediately I knew it would make a cute sundress. Also, it gave me an opportunity to use some trim colors that I normally steer away from due to the fact that they aren’t my taste.

Dress #17 DetailI even managed to find some green lace that went perfectly with it! Now, it’s a bit wrinkled because I started working on this back in August. Then I did a little more on it in November. All that I had left to do was sew on the ribbon and lace.

Dresses for Missions #18 1-18-15Dress #18 – The picture isn’t very good on this one, but I wanted to post this today so I had to make due with the lighting that I had in my dining room.

This was a pillow case that my mom had given to me. You can’t really see it, but there is some really vibrant purple and yellow in this dress. Since the pattern was already in-your-face I knew that I wanted to keep the trim simple.

I realized how long it had been since I had sewn one of these when I went to sew the trim around the arm holes. I actually had to sit and recall how to do it. At one point this was such an automatic thing that I didn’t even have to think about it. I had some wide lace to wrap around the bottom and I finished it off with an olive colored ribbon. It only took me a few hours to put this one together, but it was just as satisfying to finish as the pink one before it.

I hope to find more time in the coming weeks to sew a little more. It’s so therapeutic to use thread and needle to create such pretty dresses. I just hope that they bring a smile to a little girl’s face.

3D Printed Cats – The Purr-fect Pets!

3D Printed Cat Herd

I am always telling Jay that we need more cats. There was one time when I lived with six cats, but after my best friend adopted Bob’s brothers we were down to four. Now I just have Bob and Chester. Sometimes it’s nice to only have two cats… like when they’re fighting. Other times I wish that we had a few more. That is, until I have to scoop the potty box. That’s when I realize that Jay gave me the perfect cats for Christmas… 3D printed ones! They don’t shed. I don’t have to scoop their potty box. They never fight. They also never wake me up at 4:30 in the morning because they think it’s time for breakfast.

3D Printed Lounging CatsThese two sit on my piano. When I am practicing they actually sit there, intently listening and enjoying the music! Unlike Chester who gets grumpy and voices her disapproval as she stomps out of the living room.

3D Printed Relief Cat DarkThis one actually has a neat effect. And to be honest, it’s more impressive in person.

Jay tried printing out a relief picture of a cat. Can you somewhat see the outline of it? Obviously it didn’t really turn out like he had hoped, but he wrapped it up and gave it to me anyway. After I opened it I was looking at the detail and held it up so that I could see it better…

3D Printed Relief Cat LightThat’s when we realized that if you hold it up to the light it’s like having a monotone picture! And it looks like Chester. It really is quite neat to see it in person (I know that I’ve already said that, but I can’t help myself). I’ve asked Jay to make a box to set it in and he’s going to mount some LEDs behind it. That way I can plug it in and really have an interesting piece of décor.

CNC Router Cat House with lightsSpeaking of the cats, I had to share this picture with you. I just took all of our Christmas stuff down yesterday, but this is what our tree and the cats’ house looked like…

The cats’ house needed lights on it, too. I couldn’t have it sitting next to the tree and be envious because it wasn’t decorated. I’m not sure that Bob liked the lights on his house, though, as he refused to go in there while they were on.

And that’s the tree skirt that Chester likes to lick. I’ve told her that just because it was made in China doesn’t mean that it tastes like soy sauce. Apparently she thinks that whatever that taste is, it’s pretty good. I think that she’s going to wear bare spots into the skirt from her tongue even before the lights start to burn out.

CNC Router Nativity SetWhile I’m showing off Christmas stuff, I wanted to show you the stable that Jay built for my nativity set. He used his router to cut out the pieces and add detail to the sides and roof. Then he 3D printed the star and then put LEDs behind it and in the rafters of the stable to give it some light.

I didn’t have time this year, but next year I hope to add some more finishing touches to it. I just ran out of time what with all of the other projects that I had going on.

3D Printed Bit HolderFinally, here’s the bit holder that Jay made for the bits that he received for Christmas. He used his router to drill the holes in the block of wood and then printed out the orange top with the bit sizes. He glued them together and voila… a bit holder!

CNC Christmas Gifts

New CNC Router - 9-28-14Many people think that Jay is spoiled because he received a 3D printer for his birthday and then was allowed to buy a CNC router this summer. The guys who know him think that he’s the luckiest guy because I don’t put my foot down on these kinds of purchases.

What they don’t understand is that Jay gets these kinds of toys, and then I put him to work on various projects for me. Isn’t that what a wife is supposed to do? Jay received a compound miter saw for Christmas, which will come in very handy for finishing the trim in the library and for when I need picture frames built. See… I can be devious… Mwahahahaha…

CNC Wine Rack 1Enter exhibit #1…

My Christmas present… a new wine rack! Isn’t it pretty? Yes, it can hold fourteen bottles of wine and it takes up more room than most wine racks, but I love it.

I helped with the basic design, and then let Jay take it over from there.

CNC Wine Rack 2This piece isn’t purely about function. And some might argue that it’s not a very efficient use of the space, but I like it. This is a unique and one-of-a-kind piece of furniture. I wanted something that could easily handle the weight of that much wine without toppling over or tumbling down.

CNC Wine Rack 3This is one of my favorite features of this wine rack. On each side are wine glass cut-outs that not only are decorations, but they act as part of the support structure. Oh, and Jay added the piece of decorative molding along the back, too.

CNC Wine Rack #4 12-25-14As a bonus he cut out extra wooden wine glasses and made them into coasters. His mom has already asked for a few sets of these to give out as gifts. They don’t need to be water-resistant because if you’re using them for your wine glass there shouldn’t be any condensation to gather at the bottom.

My sister gave me some wine glass markers for Christmas. I’ve already asked Jay to put hooks on the wine rack so that I can store the markers there and won’t have to hunt for them when they are needed.

Now, for this next gift I have to admit that I stole the idea and twisted it a bit to make it my own. I had heard about this site where you can order crates of stuff for the men in your life. It arrives in a crate, with a crowbar, and the guy gets to use the crowbar to open it and then enjoy all of the fun stuff inside. I looked at the site to see if I could find something for my dad. Unfortunately, I didn’t see anything that my dad would really enjoy. I was showing Jay the site and telling him that I didn’t know what to do for my dad when he said that he could build a crate for me.

Gift Crate #1We had a LOT of fun with these crates. Jay designed and built two of them, one for my dad and one for my sister’s fiancé Chuk.

For Chuk we placed two six-packs of beer that he likes plus a rubber band gun that Jay had 3D printed. These crates were sturdy enough to handle that kind of weight. I believe that they were about a foot square.

Gift Crate #2We placed a piece of bubble wrap on the bottom to cushion the bottles, and then filled most of the space with Styrofoam peanuts.

Gift Crate #4To top it off I bought some shredded paper that is typically used in gift baskets and placed that on top. Voila! A packed crate!

Gift Crate #3We did the same for my dad, except his was filled with nuts, sugar-free candy, bacon jerky, and an extra little gift (more on that at the end of this post).

Gift Crate #5We added some extra little details, too. Jay used the CNC to make a ‘Fragile’ stencil to be used to mark the crates. He also painted the up arrow on the side. We found some of the plastic envelopes that go on the side to hold the packing slip, so I wrote up a couple of packing slips to put in there. Finally, they were nailed shut and I wrapped up a little crowbar to be used to open it. Oh, and they also were wrapped just so that they couldn’t look at them beforehand.

Gift Crate #6They had Chester’s seal of approval, so we were all good to go.

I think that they enjoyed them. They were a bit confused when I had them open the crowbar first. The last I heard both my dad and Chuk were planning on adding hinges and then using the crates to hold other things.

So, what was the extra special gift that was added to my dad’s crate? In a previous post I mentioned that I had used Modge Podge to transfer a picture for the first time. I wanted to practice first, though, before I ruined the piece of oak that Jay had cut out for the box that I was giving to Pauline.

Father's Picture 2I used a picture of me and my dad when I was about three or four years old. It was Easter and he was decked out in the orange polyester suit that my grandmother hated, but everybody else thought was hilarious. Needless to say, this has become quite an infamous picture in my family.

When I put the picture on the scrap piece of wood I dropped it and it was on there crooked. After I had finished with it I asked Jay what we should do with it. This was his idea. You’ve all seen the beautiful work that Jay has done with various projects. He has some real skill when it comes to working with power tools and wood. His idea was to make it look like this was his first project ever, just to get a good laugh out of my dad. Do you know how hard it was to do this bad of a job? It’s so bad that it really is hilarious. At least, it is to us!

Father's Picture 3This is the back. I told you had I had used a piece of scrap wood that Jay had started to cut something out, but had to stop and readjust something. Then I used it to see what color of stain I liked best for Pauline’s box. When I was experimenting with the Modge Podge I had just flipped the board over so that I would have a flat surface. Jay cut the end of the screw and one of the nails off so that they wouldn’t be poking out. But I think that the topping on this cake is the picture hanger… upside down… and taped on. LOL.

My dad plans on hanging it in his workshop and bragging that his son-in-law made it for him. 🙂

Winter Cross Project 12-19-14

Winter Cross 11-23-14I am still working on this piece. With time flying I haven’t really had a chance to work on it. However, I have managed to make a little bit of progress.

This is what it looked like at the end of November. I was still working on the bottom leg of the cross. Would it never be complete?

Winter Cross 12-19-14Yes! It was completed at the end of December. Okay, just the major stitching part was completed. I still need to do the outlining, but that has to wait until I fill in all of the words that surround the cross. And there are a LOT of them.

It really is going to look gorgeous once I get it stitched and framed. I just hope that I get it framed in time to actually be able to enjoy it. Or perhaps I will just have to have a winter-themed picture hanging on my wall until I can start and finish the next season. Should I work on Autumn or Spring next?

CNC Jewelry Boxes

Is it really 2015 already?? Where in the world did the time go? Wasn’t it just June? Wow. Either I’ve been very busy or else I have been completely oblivious to the time passing before my eyes.

I haven’t had a chance to update my blog since the beginning of December because my time was taken up with choir duties (more to come on that in a later post) and trying to get ready for Christmas. If I didn’t have a full time job getting in my way, I would be able to make more progress on my various projects!

With Christmas fast approaching I wanted to use Jay’s talents to make some homemade gifts.

Pauline's Jewelry Box 1I decided to give my best friend, Pauline, a little box. Jay drew up the box, cut it out on the CNC router and then I took over from there.

I stained the box and put three coats of poly on it.

For the first time ever I used Modge Podge to transfer the picture to the top of the box. It didn’t come out the best, but it wasn’t bad for my first try.

Pauline's Jewelry Box #4Then I lined the inside with some green velvet that I had and used a little lace on top. It looks a little goofy, I guess, but I’m not very good at visualizing these final little details.

Pauline's Jewelry Box 5Here’s a slightly different view of the inside.

Pauline seemed very happy with it, so I guess that’s all that matters. I think that I need a better plan of attack for the next one.

CNC Jewelry BoxWhile I was staining and polying the box for Pauline I decided that I should finish the two jewelry boxes that Jay had made this past summer.

I wanted to experiment with the stains so I chose a dark and a light color to see how the high grade plywood he was using would take it.

CNC Jewelry Box Stained 1This picture definitely does not do them justice. They turned out really nice!

CNC Jewelry Box Stained 3This is the first jewelry box that he made for me. To add a little bit of decoration he used his soldering iron with a fine tip to burn the wood. This was a long and tedious process so he decided that he wouldn’t do that again. In order to really show the burned decorations I used the lighter stain with three layers of gloss poly.

CNC Jewelry Box Stained 2The other box we didn’t do anything with the decorations. They were part of the program when the router was cutting them out so I decided to see what would happen when I stained this one with a dark stain. Not only did it really bring out the grain of the wood, but it also helped to bring out the carving, too.

CNC Jewelry Box Lined 2I then lined the inside of the box and the lid with felt. It’s a good thing that you can’t get a close-up look because I was NOT precise when cutting the felt.

CNC Jewelry Box Lined 3This one has a little bit of a ledge inside because there is a tray that sits down in it. I still have to finish staining and polying that, but it will have to wait for now.

All that’s left is to put the hinges on them and maybe do something with the seams on the inside. They turned out nice!

Dining Room Update – Stemware Shelves

Kitchen from LibraryDespite the fact that we started the dining room remodel in August, we are still working on little details here and there. The latest detail to be added is our set of stemware shelves. This picture is from when we first bought the house. If you look over to the left of the cupboards, between the kitchen and dining room, you can see the white shelves that are kind of inset in the wall. These were wooden and so when I repainted the trim in the dining room I decided to repaint the shelves, too. Except, the more that I looked at it the more I thought that frosted glass shelves would look great to accent the frosted glass shades of the light fixtures right next to them.

Stemware Shelves 3I must have forgotten to tell Jay about the little detail of the frosted glass because when he ordered the shelves they were just plain glass. And they were not cheap! I still wanted the frosted look so we took the do-it-yourself kit (that I had purchased when I frosted the window that was in the shower of my previous house) and frosted them.

Stemware Shelves 4It’s a fairly easy process, once you figure out just how you want to do it. At first we tried wrapping the covering around the glass so that it was on both sides, but that didn’t work. Finally Jay decided that it would work best if we just put the wrapping on one side of the glass. It turns out that was a good idea and I like the look of it.

Stemware Shelves 5Once we had covered one side of the glass we put them off to the side so that they could dry. You have to use a solution to keep the adhesive wet while you move the covering around and get the air bubbles out. Once the solution dries, though, the wrap clings nicely to the glass.

Stemware Shelves 7Jay had to work Saturday morning, so I was surprised when I got home from running errands and found him preparing to install the glass shelves. He had to make all new brackets for the shelves to sit on and then he had to line them up better. The old ones were all askew and off-kilter. Seriously, do NOT let an engineer anywhere near a tool box. The engineer who built our addition did a HORRIBLE job!

I was barely in the door Saturday morning when Jay was talking about using purple as an accent color on the back wall behind the shelves. Now, our dining room is beige and when we redo our kitchen I want to paint it a nice, springy green. I had never once even considered using purple anywhere in my color scheme.

I was okay with using it as a light accent color, but I was afraid that we wouldn’t be able to get the paint just right and that I would end up really disliking it. I told Jay that I would be okay if he used some purple LEDs and sort of back-lit it. Jay said that he couldn’t do that, etc. I left him to figure it out because I had other things that I needed to do. As I was sorting piano music he called me into the kitchen.

Stemware Shelves 6He had managed to find a way to do it! Now, in my head it was a LOT softer and not as purple as you see in this picture. Jay was a bit disappointed that I didn’t jump up and down with excitement. He should know by now that’s not how I work! lol

I liked the effect, but I still wanted it softer. I asked if he could put a dimmer on it so that we could turn the intensity down if we wanted. He worked all afternoon on it, but finally managed to get it figured out. I am waiting for the final install to happen, but it’s hooked up temporarily so that we can get the look that we were trying to achieve.

Stemware Shelves 1So here are the shelves, installed as I wanted. Just looking at them like this makes me happy. I think that it gives them just a little bit of a classier feel than the wooden shelves that they sat on before.

Stemware Shelves 2And look at how beautifully the frosted shelves turned out! I put the covered side down so that the stemware is sitting on the actual glass and you are seeing the frosted part through it.

Stemware Shelves 9And this is how it looks at night when the LEDs are on. It really does have a neat effect. I’m sure that most people wouldn’t like it, but I think that it’s interesting. The stemware is really set off with the light, too. There’s still a little more tweaking to be done, but this is how the finished product will look. Isn’t it neat?

Winter Cross Update 11-23-14

Winter Cross 10-28-14Well, it’s been another month of stitching and I feel like I’m not making any headway. This is how it looked at the end of October. I was starting to stitch the bottom part of the cross and that poinsettia was taking forever to finish!

Before I show you what it looks like now, I want you to know why I always feel like my progress is so slow.

As I work on a project I use a highlighter to color in the stitches that I’ve done on my working copy of the pattern so that I know where I’m at. It doesn’t feel like there’s a lot of yellow on that paper. The majority of the pattern pages are filled with the words that surround the cross. As I stitch the actual cross it is filling in very little of the white space on the pages.
