Double Wedding Ring Quilt – NSM 9-3-15

B is for BissellThis morning I have a little help as I post pictures of the Double Wedding Ring quilt that my mom made for me a few years ago.

Bissell thought it was his quilt since it had a ‘B’ on it. Unfortunately, no. That stands for ‘Bear’, which is the nickname that my mom has always used for me.

My Dbl Wedding Ring QuiltMy mom had always wanted to make a double wedding ring quilt. I’m not sure which manufacturer’s pattern she used, but I know that she used all of her scraps that she had for this.

It’s a full size quilt and I love to sit and look at it. I can pick out the pieces of fabric that were used in other quilts that she made for me or my sisters. Then there are the pieces of fabric that she had left over from various dresses she made me over the years. So it’s not just a quilt, it’s a fabric-based sheet of memories.

My BThis is also the only quilt she has ever, or will ever, hand quilt. Knowing how much time and work she put into this quilt makes it even more special to me. This is one that I hope to hand down through my family one day.

September is National Sewing Month

My Creative Space - SewingI learned yesterday that September is National Sewing Month. So in honor of that fact I am going to attempt to post every day (or almost every day) something that has to do with sewing.

I missed yesterday, but I’m going to try to be better about it from now on.

Babe, Droof and IIt wouldn’t be right for me to honor National Sewing Month without first honoring my mom, who instilled the love of sewing and crafting in me. She has been my biggest inspiration and my best resource as I began exploring the wonderful world of thread and fabric. Growing up we received many handmade gifts from my mom: dresses, Barbie clothes, baby doll clothes, quilts, afghans, scarfs, etc.

Babe's Quilting TableMy mom has branched out into quilting, long-arm quilting, machine embroidery, and knitting. Most of it she has taught herself by reading, practicing, and lots of trial and error. She always told us that she wasn’t book smart, but I maintain that if you put a piece of fabric and a threaded needle in her hand that she will be able to whip you up the most beautiful dress you could ever imagine. She can see it in her head perfectly and then she creates it. I’m book smart, but I would LOVE to be able to do what she does by just looking at something and KNOWING how it will look or what she will have to do to get it to come out as she wants it.

So, for me, National Sewing Month is a tribute to my mom and everything that she has taught me. Thanks, Babe, for passing on the love of sewing to me!

CNC Laser Stuff

CNC Router 2If you’ve read my blog before then this picture will be very familiar to you. This is Jay’s CNC router that he purchased last summer. It hadn’t even arrived at the house before he was telling me how he could buy a set-up for this router so that he can also do laser engraving or burning.

Yeah… like I was going to allow Jay to play with a laser in the basement! You have to be careful with them because you can so easily blind yourself by just catching the reflection of the laser in your eye. I didn’t want to take the chance that the cats could possibly wander into the workshop when he was running a laser.

After some compromise, though, and his promise to build a door that he would shut when the laser was running, he ordered it.

Shark with a LaserDue to how the laser fits on the router the shark had to be turned like this. However, we both agreed that if he was going to have a laser then he needed a shark to go with it. So Jay printed one out on his 3D printer.

“You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin’ laser beams attached to their heads!” ~ Dr. Evil

Dr. Evil would be so jealous…

So what can we do with a shark that has a frickin’ laser beam attached to his head?

We are still practicing and trying to get consistent results, and I keep forgetting to take pictures, but I did get two pictures of two things that I had Jay make for me.

Poor Bobs! While we are trying to get things dialed in we are trying to use pictures with lots of contrast. They seem to work out the best. I bought a clock blank at Hobby Lobby that was on the clearance rack and I told Jay that I wanted him to put Bob’s picture on it.

Bob Face ClockIt turned out really good!

I think that I put three coats of polyurethane on it and then Jay put the clock mechanism on it that I had also purchased.

How great is that?

Chester the SuperviosrIf I had a picture of Bob laser engraved, then I had to have one of Chester, too. I had purchased another wooden blank on the clearance rack so I asked Jay to use that. It was just a wall hanging, not a clock, but I wanted to see how it would turn out.

Chester Laser PictureNot bad! This is a good example, though, of what happens when you have different woods mixed together or just imperfections in the wood. Looking at the blank you wouldn’t have known that there would be one patch that would come out goofy. It’s okay for this picture as Chester is a goofy cat anyway.

I’ve been doing research on the best woods to engrave with a laser that won’t have a whole lot of grain that shows through. As we do more experimenting I will try to post them on here. Currently Jay is in the process of building two more planes that aren’t his, so it might be a while before I have anything else to post regarding the laser.

Sugar Control Diet – August 2015

Me and JayStill at a total weight loss of 20 pounds.

I’ve been fluctuating throughout the month, but at least I’m maintaining! It seems that either the weather is hot and humid (miserable) or else it’s raining. I haven’t gone for any walks at all this summer except for the Chicken Run that I did in July. Other than that it’s just been a chore for me to get outside to do yard work.

However, if I hadn’t been able to lose the 20 pounds I would never have been able to wear this dress in my sister’s wedding. People kept telling me how good I looked in it, but I have to admit that every time I saw myself in a picture I couldn’t help but think that I did not look good in it at all. In my mind’s eye my hips and butt looked huge and my best assets were a bit hidden. At least, that’s how it looked to me in the pictures. I’m sure that many people would disagree, but they see flaws in the mirror when they look at themselves that I would never even see.

I believe that last month I mentioned that I was going to seriously look into joining a gym. I did seriously look, but due to other factors that might have been an influence as to whether I felt we would be able to afford it, I didn’t pull the trigger. Now that I know for sure what my finances should look like, I might actually look into joining the Y. Jay said that he would join if I would play racquetball with him. I’ve never been a runner or highly athletic, but I’m considering it. I know that it might be hard on my ankles and knees, but I’m willing to give it a try. When I was in Fifth grade I was on a Little League team and loved it, but my mom told me that after that first season was over I wouldn’t be allowed to join again. You see, after every practice and every game I would have to go home and ice my ankles because they would swell up so bad. My family just isn’t made up of athletic people. In fact, my older sister failed gym class! My dad almost failed… but he managed to barely pass with a D-.

Hopefully in September I’ll have a better update for you regarding the whole exercise thing…

I did some more experimenting this month and attempted to make paleo gummies. Gummies are my kryptonite. I LOVE gummies. I found this recipe for paleo gummies that called for blended up fruit and gelatin. It sounded simple enough and so I gave it a try. *sigh* It did not turn out well. Perhaps I had my expectations way too high because I was SO disappointed. My favorite gummies are the soft, chewy gummy bears. This stuff was more like three-day-old Jello; too dense without the right kind of chewy. So I give up on trying to make gummies.

I have had a couple of compliments, though. Yesterday when I was out working in the yard I was talking with my neighbor and she said, “You really have lost a lot of weight, haven’t you?” I think that she noticed because I had to keep pulling up my sweatpants as they drooped down. 🙂

Oh, and on a side note… the zucchini relish that I made with the stevia baking blend turned out really good! I’ll be sure to post about that sometime in the near future.

Summer Cross Updated – 8-28-15

Summer Cross 8-6-15I didn’t realize that it took me so long to do the lettering on this piece. I thought that I was making pretty good time on this piece. Apparently not as this is what it looked like twenty-two days ago. I had just finished the stitches for this portion of the cross.

Summer Cross 8-28-15And now this is how it looks after I got all of the words stitched in around the cross. At least, this portion of the cross. I’m going to stitch a few more letters in the word ‘Friendship’ at the very top, but then I will start the outlining. I can’t wait! That’s when this will REALLY start to pop!

Practicing Photoshop

Droof and I comparing NailsMy sister brought the pictures from her wedding with her and on the thumb drive were two folders: Edited & Unedited.

This picture is from the ‘Edited’ file. I’m sure that if I compared them I could maybe see what was done. I really like this picture, though. It’s as if we are in our own little world without a care as to who is peeking in.

Looking at my sister’s pictures piqued my interest a bit in editing pictures. I’ve downloaded a few lessons on Craftsy about how to use Photoshop, and I’ve even watched a few of them. Jay has Photoshop on his computer and I’ve tried using it a few times, but I’m usually frustrated because I have no idea what I’m doing.

Now, I have not become a pro at this by any stretch of the imagination, but I have tried it out on two different pictures.

Uncle Red Oct 1945The first picture that I attempted to Photoshop was one of my dad’s uncle. This is his service picture from WWII and as you can see there are some creases, some discoloration, and other little flaws here and there.

So I took a stab at it and tried to clean it up a bit.

Edited Uncle Red Oct 1945Not the best job, I know. I had to cheat and crop the burn mark out of the bottom. I did manage to iron out the crease and I think that I did an okay job of evening out the colors. Again, nothing too drastic.

Jay Dressed UpThis is the second picture that I’ve attempted to clean up. This is my Sweetie after I finally made him get changed into his monkey suit for my sister’s wedding. He was posing for the photographer.

I love the “Look at all this!” attitude he is displaying, but due to the light from the window it’s not really the best picture.

Edited Jay Dressed Up copyObviously I have more room for improvement. I have to do some more homework to figure out the light/shadows versus contrast. At least you can see his face better in this one!

Besides the fact that I cropped it a little bit, can you tell what else is different?

I’ll give you a hint… chair, lamp, bathroom…

I didn’t have to do any touch-ups to Jay because he’s perfect just the way he is. 🙂

What do you think? Am I doing okay? Or should I throw in the towel?

Book Review – “Lincoln In The World”

As a student of Civil War history I have read a LOT about Lincoln. I received this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for this review and it is definitely one that I’m glad to be able to add to my bookshelf. There aren’t many books about Lincoln and his foreign policies, but Kevin Peraino does a good job of bringing the history alive without making it boring.

There is a lot of information in this book, with almost one hundred pages of source notes and selected biographies to back it all up. There were a couple of times that I had to go back and re-read a section to make sure that I understood the point that the author was trying to make. There is a lot here to digest all at once! There are only six chapters, but each one is about 50 pages and is packed FULL of information.

If you love history and especially love to read about the Civil War then I would definitely recommend this book. It might take a little while to get through, but in the end it’s definitely worth it!

Concrete Cats

Bob and Chester StalkingIf you’ve read my blog on a semi-regular basis you might know that I kind of love cats. I only have two, but that is solely because of very strong willpower. I try not to cuddle kittens that are up for adoption so that I’m not tempted to put them in my pocket and take them home. However, there are times when I think that I have two too many cats. That is usually when I have to scoop the litter pan, clean up the latest pile of puke, or vacuum the cat fur tumbleweeds that reproduce like dust bunnies.

Concrete BobThus, when I saw this adorable cat I knew that I had to take him home. He was just too adorable! I still had a lot of paint left over from my dad’s calf so I thought that I would take a shot at painting another concrete statue.

This one reminded me of my Bobs, so I decided that I would paint him in a similar color scheme.

Cat BathWhat do you think? Obviously you can’t see him very well as I have him stashed behind the bush by the front porch. I’ve had him out there for a few weeks now, but I’m not sure if the birds have discovered that he’s a bird bath.

Edited Cat Bath and Bird FeederPerhaps they are worried that he’s looking at their feeder while pretending to be a bird bath. lol

And it’s not like the birds haven’t had a warning…

Beware SignJay made me this sign.

Gotta love the bite mark!

Concrete Cat 3Don’t worry, I didn’t leave Chester out. I found this adorable little kitten that I painted up like her. She now sleeps out under my Rose of Sharon bush by the back step.

Concrete JoeyWhen I bought the bird bath I had originally gone to the garden center to purchase this adorable little guy to paint for my sister.

This cat looks so much like my sister’s Flame Point Himalayan.

standing joeyOkay, this isn’t the best picture of Joey, but it’s one of my favorites because he’s just so stinkin’ cute in it!

Let me see if I can find a better one (believe me… there is no shortage of Joey pictures on my computer…)

joey024Joey’s coloring is interesting because in some pictures it’s darker and in some you can hardly see it. No matter what, though, he’s ALWAYS cuter than words!

Concrete Joey -FinishedI did my best with this. I was disappointed in the end result, but everybody else thought that it was really good.

I figured that it would be something nice for my sister’s front porch. Also, it would be a cat that she could bring home and her husband couldn’t get upset about another cat to clean up after.

Concrete Joey - Finished SideAgain, I was very picky about the coloring. It was hard to blend it in. First it was too orange, and then it was too yellow, and at one point it looked like I had slathered orange sorbet all over it.

Concrete Joey - Finished BackAs you can see, I had a supervisor helping me when I was painting the Joey.

I figured that if it didn’t turn out okay that my sister could always put it out in her backyard where you could just see it from a distance.

I believe that this is going to be the last of my concrete painting for a while. I really am not good at painting and I end up disappointed with the end result every time. Yes, I am my own worst critic.

Joey SupervisingAnd now it’s time for a nap….

2015 R/C Air Show

Flight Line 2Almost every year our Remote Control Airplane club holds an Air Show. It isn’t as organized as regular air shows that you might have attended. Ours tends to be more of a giant fun fly where guys show up, put their models on display, do a lot of chit-chatting and then perhaps they will toss one into the air. I’ve been told that they used to draw a very large crowd, but in the past few years it has started to dwindle. It seems like there are always a LOT of things going on in the area on the same day as our air show. We ask for a donation at the gate and all of the proceeds goes to Make-A-Wish. Last year our club ended up actually donating more than what we had made on the air show.

Before the air show, though, there is a lot of set up to be done. We hold this event at the local Trades school because they have a lot of parking area and they also have indoor restrooms that we can use. At our field we only have a PortaPotty (which I refuse to use) and very little room for a large crowd. So the few days before the air show guys show up at the school to help mow an air strip into the grass, get tents set up, and bring down the flags that act as a barrier so that the general public can’t just walk right up to the flight line during the show. If you’ve never been around RC planes you can’t really appreciate the damage that they can do.

Jay's Prop Strike 6-29-13Ask Jay… he can tell you…

PreShow - Edited Spitfire Wing DragAfter set up is complete that’s when the fun begins. There is usually a decently sized group of guys who bring some models up to toss around the night before. Since they only fly there a few times a year they like to brush up on their flying skills before they are in front of the public. It’s also a good time to maiden any new models that you want to show off at the show.

PreShow - Maiden FlightThis year Jay actually flew other guys’ planes more than he flew his own.

He did three or four maidens. A few regular flights, and whatever other advice they might have needed from him. He is our club’s foremost authority on electric power systems and electric set-ups in general.

PreShow - Spitfire Gear UpIn fact, the Spitfire in this picture was one that Jay had helped our friend Sam build two winters ago. Then it sat in our basement for a year before Jay finally finished it up for Sam and gave it to him this past spring. Yes, it was ready to go this past spring and it just was maidened this past weekend. And Jay was the one to maiden it. In fact, Jay has put four or five flights on this plane. He loves the way it flies.

PresShow - Sunset FlyingThe activities will go on into dark on the night before the show. There’s a lot of conversation, refreshments, and once in a while one of the guys will actually fly something.

PreShow - Octocopter FlightThis year there was a group of college students who built an octocopter and were going to demonstrate it at the air show. With all of the talk of drones in the news lately we thought that people might like to see one close up. This one was MUCH bigger than what you see being shot down in Kentucky or causing issues around airports (idiots!), but it helps to take a little bit of the fear away. Oh, and Jay is flying the octocopter for the guys in this picture, too.

IRONY:

PreShow - Radio Programming

A group of college students who are majoring in electronics, computer programming, robotics, and information systems… having to wait until a foundry supervisor (without a college education) is free so that he can program their radio to fly the octocopter.

TRUE STORY

PreShow - Octocopter 2

Once Jay had programmed their radio for them they got it up in the air for a little bit. Actually, Jay put it up in the air for them for a little bit. Only a couple of them are confident enough to even attempt to try flying it.

They are good kids, though. Very polite.

Jet Maiden

The morning of the air show came much too quickly, but we got both cars packed up and headed out.

Once Jay had unpacked the car he was asked to maiden another guy’s EDF jet. Jay did this, helped to get it trimmed out, and then gave the guy a few pointers for when he goes to fly it.

Jay's AssortmentOnly eight of these are Jay’s. The kid next to us owns four of these, although one of them used to be Jay’s. Kenny is a good kid. He just needs a little more flight time under his neck strap.

Kenny's SenoritaSpeaking of Kenny… here’s the Seniorita that Jay built for him. Jay did a nice job, didn’t he?

Airplane AssortmentThere were all different kinds of planes at the air show….

EDF

Gas

Nitro

Turbine

Turbine JetEvery year one of our members brings a turbine jet to demonstrate for the crowd. We can’t fly turbines at our field, but there’s enough room at the school that it’s not an issue.

These aren’t cheap, either. Jay guesses that this particular jet would cost around $15,000. Unfortunately, the guy ended up taking it home in pieces. Something happened, it got away from him and went in. Luckily there wasn’t any fire to put out, but the entire thing was destroyed. I have told Jay that turbines are one thing that he is NOT allowed to get into. Not only would we have to drive an hour away just for him to fly them, but they are too much of an investment. He is okay with that.

Readying For FlightThere are enough makes and models out there to keep Jay busy for quite a while. Especially if he keeps picking up kits that he actually has to build. Since he enjoys doing that I’m not too worried.

Sam's SpitfireBesides, with the other guys in the club asking him to fly their planes he shouldn’t ever get bored!

All he has to do is tell Sam to bring the Spitfire up to the field and he gets to fly it all he wants.

Rascal Ready for Flight

His Rascal might feel a little left out, though.

Poor little Rascal…

Candy DropSo, despite the fact that the candy drop ended up putting the kids in the field (again), and the turbine jet went in… it was a great time. I’m not sure how much of a profit that we made for Make-A-Wish, but it was a good day. Thankfully we have another 364 days before we have to worry about the next air show…

Summer Cross Update – 8-6-15

Summer Cross 7-15-15Is it just me, or has this summer FLOWN by?? Where did it go? Wasn’t it just Memorial Day weekend? I was telling Jay the other day that I feel like I haven’t done anything this summer as I didn’t manage to knock hardly anything off of my To Do list. *sigh*

This is my Summer Cross as of July 15th. As I was stitching I felt like I wasn’t getting a whole lot done. I was just working on two little areas.

Summer Cross 8-6-15I guess that maybe I did do quite a bit on this in a few weeks! Again, this is the exact reason why I enjoy writing these posts. I go from feeling like I didn’t make much headway at all to feeling like, “Wow! Look at how much I did in just a few weeks with what little time I had!”

At this point all of the regular stitching is done on the northwest part of the cross. I have started working on the words that surround this area. I need to get the wording done because some of it runs right into the cross, so I can’t do any outlining until I don’t have to worry about missing something that should be going underneath the outline. If that makes sense…

I can’t wait to start the outlining because that’s when the picture will really start to pop! Oh, and the good thing about doing the wording on this cross, as compared to the Winter Cross, is that there aren’t any French knots between the words! I get to make ‘+’ instead! Woo-hoo!!!
