Summer Cross Project – 1-24-16

Summer Cross 1-2-16As the new year started I hoped to have more time to sit and stitch in the morning. Winter, however, decided to finally arrive so I’ve been spending a few mornings shoveling instead of stitching.

Then I took on a new prayer group at church, so that takes up a bit of my morning, too.

Summer Cross 1-24-16Even with all of that going on I have managed to find time to make some progress on this. Actually, the past few Fridays after Jay and I have chatted for a bit, he goes downstairs and I sit in my stitching corner. I’ve been able to get a few hours in each time and it feels so nice. It’s the perfect way to unwind after an insane week!

Trivet! Trivet!

TrivetOne of my friends gave me a glass trivet for Christmas this year. It is really quite an interesting piece, but I didn’t know what to do with it. Use it as a trivet?? I don’t use trivets!

Then I hit upon an idea…

Router TableFor Christmas Jay received a router table.

Which he promptly built a platform for it to sit on. This platform, though, has a top section where he can switch out his different power tools and they will fit right on top perfectly…

Miter Saw… he created the adaptor plate for his miter saw…

Table Saw… and one for the table saw.

Trivet on Unfinished FrameMy idea was to place the trivet on a frame of sorts that would also house some LED’s so that it can light up.

Trivet Unfinished FrameJay was happy to work on this because he was able to use almost every power tool in his workshop:

CNC router

Router table

Miter Saw

Table Saw

Pneumatic Brad Nailer

Trivet LED padThen he soldered together some LED strips. If I did my math correctly there are 153 LED’s on this little platform.

Trivet Frame with LED padThe platform rests in the cavity of the frame, and the trivet will be placed on top.

Trivet Lit UpIsn’t that neat?!

I have stained it and applied the first layer of poly, so I don’t have a picture of the finished piece. I think it will be stunning, though.

Still Learning to Crochet

Final Swatch - November 215The last time I showed you any pictures about my attempts at crocheting I was working on this piece. I had no idea what it was going to be, but I was just practicing my stitches. As you can see, I’m not very good at crocheting yet. My sides are all wonky and I kept adding and losing stitches. Bob likes sleeping on it, though, so I’ve placed it on one of this sleep pads near the heat register.

Macaw YarnSo that I wouldn’t get bored I picked up a multi-colored skein of yarn when I was out shopping. I chose a very inexpensive skein so that I wouldn’t feel bad about just making swatches with it. Obviously it didn’t have the same feel as the previous one because this yarn is an acrylic and the swatch above is a cotton yarn.

I also purchased a class on Craftsy called Crochet Basics & Beyond. Kim Werker is the instructor and I enjoyed her lessons so much that I also purchased her second class, Next Steps in Crochet , despite the fact that I’m not ready to move onto it. I’m still trying to make a swatch that doesn’t have wonky sides!

3rd Swatch 1-17-15This is my third go-round on this swatch. The first time I was REALLY way off with picking up and losing stitches. So I tore it all out and started again. The second time I did a better job, but I still wasn’t happy. I tore it all out and wound up this ball of yarn. The third time’s the charm, right? Let’s hope so! This is all just double crochet right now, but I think that I will throw in some treble crochet and perhaps half-double crochet.

3rd Swatch EdgeSo far my edges are looking pretty good.

I am working on this just until I’m happy with how my stitches are going. When I feel that I’ve got it down a bit then I might switch over to the shawl that I want to make.

Remember this shawl? I still haven’t even started it. I don’t want to be tearing it out a million times so I’m trying to be patient.

Shawl YarnIt’s hard, though, because I purchased the yarn on Black Friday at a really good price! These colors look nice (at least, to me they do) and it’s a lovely-feeling yarn.

Yarn WranglerIn the meantime, I’m still plugging away on this stuff. When I tore my stitching out the second time I wound the yarn into a ball, but I was having a hard time keeping it from running away when I pulled more yarn off of it. I was trying to decide if I should buy a yarn holder thing when I thought that would be stupid as I’m sure that I have something around here that would work. And I did! There’s nothing that a good plastic dish can’t handle!

Glittery NailsAlso, one other thing that I’ve discovered…

Glitter nails always improve everything!

Egads! It’s a Spad! Part 9

Ziroli A-1 Side 12-13-15Chad, the Spad, was rather sad.

It had been a while since Jay had really done much playing. The problem? Jay was to the point where he needed to work on the landing gear mounts, etc… but his mean ol’ wife wouldn’t let him unwrap the present early that contained the landing gear.

Ziroli A-1 Landing Gear Spot 1-10-16Finally it was Christmas and the box was unwrapped…

This is special gear that as the gear comes out, or is brought in, the wheel rotates into place.

After unwrapping the gear I was able to witness this quite a few times.

Ziroli A-1 Landing Gear Mount 1-10-16And sometimes when I’m upstairs I can hear them being played with in the basement.

Jay is VERY happy with his landing gear.

Ziroli A-1 Landing Gear Wheel 1-10-16Now he just needs the wheels…

I’ve been told that I MUST mention that these are not the actual wheels that will be used on the plane. They are just models for getting the size of the tire cavity correct, and also for propping the Spad up on his feet.

Ziroli A-1 Tail Wheel Gear 1-10-16We even have the special tail wheel installed.

Ziroli A-1 Tail Wheel Mount 1-10-16It’s amazing how pricey these things are.

Ziroli A-1 Tail Wheel 1-10-16The thing that kills me is for the majority of their flight time, these parts aren’t even visible!

All of the cool kids had the best sneakers in school, though, so I guess that Chad needs the cool kid sneakers, too.

That’s really all that has been updated so far on the Spad. I did receive a request for more pictures of the nose sheeting. What follows is a series of pictures that I took in order to accommodate this request. I hope that they are what the gentleman was looking for. Let me know if there’s anything else that you would like to know. Thanks!

P.S. – The plane was laying on it’s back, three wheels to the sun, when the pictures were taken…. just to get you oriented when looking at the pictures.

Summer Cross Project – 1-2-16

Summer Cross 11-6-15At the beginning of November I had finished stitching the top left corner of the cross and the background words. I had even managed to get it all outlined. It was really looking good.

Summer Cross 12-3-15With everything going on, by the beginning of December I had only managed to add a little to the top right corner of the cross. You can see a couple of strawberries, a few pieces of leaf, and part of a stick.

Summer Cross 1-2-16Apparently in December I managed to find more time than I had thought. There is now a peach carnation, some more orange pansies, and even more greenery. I think that I have more grapes that will be showing up on this quarter along with the greenery and sticks that form the right arm of the cross. Perhaps I’m not working as slowly on this as I had feared.

Food: A Pet Peeve

Cupcakes 8-27-09Considering the number of overweight individuals in this country it probably is not a surprise for people to learn that food plays a big part in a LOT of stuff.

Are you having people over? Then somebody needs to cook. Is it somebody’s birthday? Let’s go get a cake! Did somebody pass away? Don’t forget to take the Funeral Potatoes with you to console them. Is somebody sick? Make some homemade soup and drop it off for them. Your boss wants to thank you for a job well done? Order pizza for lunch! Are you meeting somebody for the first time? Let’s do it over dinner! Is there a sporting event on TV? Somebody bring the deep-fried foods!

For most people these are high points in their day. For me it ends up being an irritating, frustrating, and often, angry part of my existence. If I didn’t rely on it so heavily to keep me alive then I would happily give all food up just to avoid the hassle.

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease nine and a half years ago, and though now it’s easier to find gluten free products, it’s still just as hard for me to enjoy many social situations. At work this really comes to a head for me around Christmas time. That’s when all of our vendors want to bring lunch in for us to thank us for our business. That’s all fine and dandy, but I can’t eat anything that they bring in! One or two will offer to get me something special, but if they are getting it at the same place as the other food, I decline. The last thing that I want to do is get sick because the person making the food was busy trying to get it all done in time and didn’t change their gloves after making the giant sandwich and then making my salad. Also, as I pointed out to one vendor who offered to get me a salad since I couldn’t eat the pizza he was bringing, how about if I make a whole ton of really good smelling food… but all you’re allowed to eat is a salad as everybody else sits and partakes of the good-smelling stuff.

Maybe I’m being oversensitive. Or, perhaps I’m not being sensitive enough to the people who have never had to deal with this before. I’ve tried it both ways. I will decline an invitation and then I get the guilt trip that everybody missed me and really wished that I was there. I’ve accepted the invitation and then sat there, eating nothing, while having to explain a billion times why I can’t eat anything there and making the host/hostess feel guilty. I’ve accepted the invitation and brought my own food to eat, again making the host/hostess feel guilty that I can’t eat anything that they’ve made. No matter what I do it seems that I either offend somebody or lay a guilt trip on them. That’s not my intention! There is nothing more that I would rather do than attend a function and be able to laugh and enjoy myself fully. But they all involve food! And not just any food, but gluten-laden food!

Here, Kerry, here are a few carrot sticks and some celery. Don’t mind me while I eat this heavenly-looking piece of cake or inhale this wonderful-smelling pizza.

Hello, Hostess, since I can’t eat your food I did bring a plate of gluten free cookies to share. Oh, but you just placed them on the same tray as the full-of-gluten cookies. Okay… never mind.. I didn’t really want to eat any of them myself.

Hello fellow party-goer. Yes, those are gluten-free cookies. No, they aren’t hard to make. No, thank you, now that you have just touched the really crumbly regular cookies and then touched the gluten free ones, I’m no longer hungry for them.

The people with nut and shellfish allergies know what I’m talking about. We can’t just scrape off the stuff that we’re allergic to and be able to consume the rest. No, we can’t have just a little because yes, it WILL hurt us. Will gluten kill me immediately? Nope, but it may cause some very undesirable consequences in polite company.

I don’t have a solution for this problem, either. So I will continue to get angry and irritated over the use of food as a motivational tool or socializing medium. I will continue to wish that everybody could experience, just for a day, what it’s like to have to be in some of these situations as a Celiac. And I shall continue to watch the gluten-free edible that I have brought like a hawk to see if it’s contaminated at any point so that I don’t eat it.

In the meantime, PLEASE don’t offer to get me a salad. PLEASE don’t offer to have a veggie or fruit tray there for me. Actually, what would make it easier is if you would just not invite me to these things. I wouldn’t be offended! Not at all. I am perfectly happy in my gluten-free house, safely hidden from the gluten-filled temptations of the outside world.

Dresses for Missions Update 1-2-16

2nd Group Dress 8 11-14-15It’s been a while since I’ve posted an update on the Dresses for Missions stuff that I’ve worked on.

I finished this a few weeks before Thanksgiving, but I’ve just now found time to actually snap a picture for the blog. After I worked on this I had to get working on my Library doors, so all of my sewing took a back seat.

Then Christmas was on the way and I had to work on projects for my brother-in-law and niece.

So my dresses waited…

Sewing Room - Christmas 2015One of the gifts that I asked Jay to get me for Christmas was a light for my ironing board area. The other part of the gift, though, was that he had to change the receptacle right there. Plugs wouldn’t stay in it for the outlet was old and wouldn’t hold them. So Jay changed the outlet and installed my light.

I hate working in the dark so now I have LOTS of light in my sewing room. I couldn’t let this room sit idle after that. Do you see the square of pink that sits on the far end of my bannister in this picture? That was a square of fleece that I had prepped to make into a blanket… over a year ago.

Dresses for Missions Blankets 12-27-15In fact, I had four blankets that were essentially ready, they just needed the satin blanket binding on the edges. I was afraid to do this, though, because I had never done it before. I watched a few YouTube videos, settled on two different ways to do it that I wanted to try, and then just did it.

Dresses for Missions Blankets Other Corner 12-27-15I’m not 100% satisfied with how they turned out. I feel that it wrinkled up too much and not all of my corners were beautifully mitered.

I also discovered that I enjoyed sewing on the flannel more than I liked sewing on the fleece.

Dresses for Missions Blankets Corner 12-27-15I have to admit that this flannel blanket with the animals on one side and the sand-colored flannel on the backside is my favorite of the four. Again, I’m not completely happy with the way that the binding went on, but it turned out decently enough for my first time really working with this stuff. I definitely have more to learn.

2nd Group Dress 9 1-2-16After working on the blankets I decided that I should go back to my forte… trimming out the dresses. I think that I still have another three or four dresses that need the binding and trim added to them. Most of them are this same orange and golden yellow color, so I’m not really feeling the creativity when it comes to making them fancy. These aren’t my favorite colors to begin with, so it’s even harder trying to make them fancy. I’ll do it, but it might take me a little while.

Handmade Christmas Gifts

Is there anything better than spending time working on a gift for somebody and you just know that they are going to love it? Okay, perhaps actually receiving said gift is better, but it really is a toss up for me. If you’ve spent any time on my blog at all you already know that Jay and I love making things with our hands. At Christmas we really get to use that to whatever extent we want. We actually were commissioned to make two gifts for other people this year.

My DisplayThis is my display at the craft show I attended this year, but apparently it’s the only picture that I have of our Six Pack ‘O Joy that we make. Jay’s aunt saw it and wanted one for her son-in-law. We even personalized it so that it said ‘Eddie’s Six Pack ‘O Joy’. We haven’t heard what his reaction was, but prior to Christmas his aunt was VERY happy with it.

Kim Squared Sign 12-13-15One of our friends at church wanted a name sign for her daughter and son-in-law. Their names are Kimberly and Kimber, so she wanted a sign that said Kim squared. The husband is a big Civil War buff, they both like to garden and travel, so Jay personalized it a little for them.

Kim Squared Grapes 12-13-15The grapes represent not only their love for gardening, but also the fact that they come from a large grape-growing area. Above the ‘Kim2’ you can see the contrail from the jet that is flying across the sign.

Kim Squared Flags 12-13-15And then the crossed flags, rifles, and kepis for the Civil War.

I think that it turned out rather nice.

Father's ToolboxLast year for Christmas we made my dad and my brother-in-law wooden crates and filled them with goodies. Jay wanted to make something for both of them this year, but we were drawing a blank. My sister came up with the idea of making old-fashioned tool boxes for them and stuffing them with goodies. Good thinking!

Chuk's ToolboxPoor Chuk… Jay thought it would be hilarious to make it look like he had messed up when cutting the name into the box, and instead of fixing it correctly he just “crossed it out and continued with Chuk’s name”.

I also stained them in two different colors so that I could tell whose was whose when I had only the handle showing from the gift wrapping.

Chuk Opening ToolboxAs you can see, I really did a fancy job when wrapping them.

I took a king size pillow, chopped it in half and sewed up the ends. Then I cut a square out of the top so that we could grab the handle.

Father Opening ToolboxThose pillow cases actually fit quite snugly around them.

Chuk and his toolboxI had forgotten to take a picture of the boxes stuffed with goodies before I put the pillow cases on them. Once the cases were on I was NOT taking them off.

So here is Chuk modeling his snack box.

Father and his Toolbox - editedAnd my dad was very excited about his.

My Cat Clock - 2015I was the recipient of a few handmade gifts, too! First here is the cat clock that Jay made me. I had wanted a clock for our family room and the weekend before Christmas this was what popped into Jay’s head.

He did a good job staining with the different colors. He modeled it after Bob’s colors. I can’t wait to put this on the wall!

Bottle WindchimeThen my mom made me a wind chime! This was made out of a wine bottle that she modge-podged pictures of Bob, Chester, and Joey on for me.

Isn’t it cute?

What? You can’t see it. Hold on… let me bring it closer…

Bottle Windchime - BobHere’s my Bobs. Doesn’t he look adorable?

Bottle Windchime - ChesterAnd there’s Chester! She’s just watching to see what you’re doing, on the off chance there’s a possibility that she could maybe get some treats.

Bottle Windchime - JoeyAnd for cuteness overload…. there’s Joey!!

Technically he’s my sister’s cat, but everybody loves Joey! He’s just so stinkin’ adorable! Warning, he’s for decoration only! Do not expect him to play with toys or exert any kind of energy to do anything more than sleep, cuddle or eat.

But he’s still stinkin’ cute!

Cats Causing TrebleOh man… it looks like I need to get going. The cats are causing treble….

hehehehehehe

A Belated Merry Christmas!

Christmas Ornament - 2015Things were crazy for me right before Christmas. We were trying to finish up Christmas gifts, cleaning the house, and running around to various different places for an endless number of events.

I hope that everybody had a wonderful and very Merry Christmas!

Nativity Set - 2015Despite the commercialism of the season I tried to keep foremost in my mind the reason why we celebrate Christmas. Jesus was God’s gift to us, to redeem us and die for our sins so that we might live forever.

Victorian Nativity Scene - 2015My favorite Christmas song is ‘Mary, Did You Know?’

If you get a chance, listen to the song and just ponder it for a bit.

Christmas Tree 2015Merry Christmas. May God bless all of you and your families in this coming year.

A Sketchbag for Christmas

Tim-Raven WalkingChristmas is coming up and so I asked my sister what I could get her stepdaughter. It seems that this girl loves to draw so I was told anything dealing with drawing would be very much loved.

This was new territory for me. I have never been a good artist at all. In high school I had to draw a picture using pastels, so I chose a Tiger Lily thinking that it would be fairly simple. It was the prettiest orange banana peel that you have ever seen! Needless to say, I’ve never ventured down the drawing aisles at Hobby Lobby.

While perusing the goods I stumbled across a hard bound sketch book that was decently priced. I also bought a few pencils, drawing pens, and other little things to go along with it. But I couldn’t leave it at that. I wanted to do something else. I wanted to make a little bag, of sorts, to go along with it so that it would be easy to grab and go. She can keep all of her drawing things together and carry it between her mom’s and dad’s places with very little trouble.

Sketchbag PatternsI searched all over the internet, but nobody really had what I was seeing in my mind. I knew that I wouldn’t be happy unless I could make something that I thought would be perfect. I was seeing a carrying case that snugly fit the sketchbook, with a flap that opens on the outside and holds all of her colored pencils, pencils, and pens with little elastic loops.

Sketchbag Finished FrontSomething like this, in her favorite colors of black and hot pink.

Sketchbag Finished Pencil PocketThat opens to reveal her pencils all neatly organized.

This was not an easy project for me to create, so let me take you through the steps in case you are interested in trying to make something similar.

Sketchbag Shell patternI am not good at just making things up like this out of thin air. Especially when it comes to sewing. I’m still fairly brand new at this hobby so I don’t have a good feel for how I need to piece things together to get the outcome I want. It was a slow and thought-out process.

I started by measuring the book’s cover and spine to get an idea of how big the shell would have to be. I then added 1/4″ all the way around for the seam allowance. Here you can see my chicken scratch as I drew out what I wanted to do.

Sketchbag Pocket PatternI did the same thing for the front pocket. I knew how big my cover was, so I deducted some width and length for the pocket. I knew that I wanted two areas for the pencils plus the flap. Then I roughly calculated where I would have to sew the elastic to make it look even. I told you this was quite the process! I wanted to make sure that I had my game plan all set before I even started to sew a single stitch.

Sketchbag MaterialsFor my materials I used a cut of the pink swirly cloth, some black duck cloth that I had on hand (I figured it would hold up to a little more abuse), and then elastic and the handle material. I also ended up using some plastic canvas, but I’ll get into that a little later.

Sketchbag Piece PlacementI cut all of my pieces first. I used the pink swirls as an accent color on the inside. I also created essentially two pockets on each side. I had a couple different ideas swirling around as to what exactly I would do, but I ended up sliding the back cover into the top pocket (between the pink swirls and black cloth), then I slid the front cover between the second pocket (between the two pieces of black cloth). I placed the light pink material in between so that you can see they will end up being pockets once they are sewn.

Sketchbag Front Pocket PiecesI then cut two pieces of the pink swirls for the front pocket. I made this all one piece because I wanted to avoid having to deal with hiding seams and making it look good once the pocket was sewn onto the front cover. Because I was going to sew the front pocket on, but couldn’t do it after the inside was all sewn together, I had to go to work on the front pocket first.

Sketchbag Front Pocket Elastic PlacementsUsing the pattern I had drawn up at the beginning, I made some chalk lines on the material so that I would know exactly where the two lines of elastic would go and where the pocket would actually get sewn onto the front cover.

Sketchbag Front Pocket Elastic SewingThen came the boring part… sewing on the elastic. This was actually the hardest thing for me to do. I was winging it because I couldn’t find any really good instructions to tell me how to do this. Believe me, I looked! So I did what made sense to me. I grabbed a colored pencil and used it to figure out how big to make each loop. I decided to sew both pieces of elastic at the same time so that I wouldn’t have to worry about going back to align the second piece of elastic. So I did this for every loop… pulling the elastic over and determining where it should be sewn.

Sketchbag Front Pocket Sewing ElasticThen I wanted some flat spaces between each pencil so that when the pocket is folded the two groups of pencils should (hopefully) nestle in beside one another.

So this was the process; use the pencil to figure out the loop, sew the loop, figure out the second loop, sew the loop, figure out where the flat spot ends, sew it down, figure out the loop, sew it down, etc.

Sketchbag Front Pocket Sewn TogetherIt took me over two hours for each section, but when I was done, it was somewhat lined up. Next you want to determine where the Velcro needs to go to hold it closed. Position those and sew them on. Then I put the other piece of material for the pocket on and sewed it together. Don’t forget to cut the corners before you turn it right side out. You might want to take an iron to it at this point to smooth out those edge seams.

Sketchbag Front Pocket Plastic CanvasBefore going around the edges with a top stitch I decided that I wanted to stiffen the pocket up a little bit, but also make sure that if anything got spilled on it the cover could easily be washed. So I used plastic canvas. I cut it to size, in three different sections, inserted them into the pocket, and sewed it up.

Sketchbag Front Pocket DoneIt looks like it turned out okay.

Sketchbag Front Pocket Overlapping PencilsChester was helping me to determine if the pencils were hugging between each other like I had hoped. They were!

Sketchbag Front Pocket PinnedPlace the pocket on the piece of material that is being used for the outside of the bag. I actually wrapped it around the book, too, so that I could get a better idea of where the pocket should be placed. Then pin it together. Based on the chalk lines that were put on the material earlier, sew the pocket onto the front cover.

Sketchbag Front Pocket Top StitchingBefore pinning the inner pieces in place for sewing make sure that you sew the edges over on all of the inside pieces. You want these to look nice.

Sketchbag Close Tab with VelcroI also made a flap and sewed it, along with its matching piece of Velcro, to the inside pink swirly pieces.

Sketchbag Handle PlacementOn the outside shell piece I found the middle and then put two pins on either side where I felt the bag handles should be sewn.

Sketchbag Inside Piece PlacementNow it’s time to sew it all together. It’s going to be a little bulky due to the pocket already being sewn onto the front, but just take your time and it will be okay.

Sketchbag Inner Pieces PinnedI actually pinned each layer separately. It was easier for me to line it all up one piece at a time. That made for a lot of pins, but it worked out really well for me.

I also pinned both sides on so that once I sat down at my sewing machine I could sew both on without having to get up again.

Sketchbag InsideOnce they were sewn together I trimmed the seams a little bit, cut the corners and flipped it right side out. So far, so good! Then I ironed the edges a bit (be careful about the side where the pocket is as there is plastic canvas in it). To give it a more finished look I also top stitched the edges, too.

Sketchbag Finished OpenI think that it turned out okay. I hope that she likes it. My sister thinks that she will.

Sketchbag Finished BackThe End.
