Adrift

Jay on the Lake 8-8-13This past week while Jay was on shut down we decided to take a boat ride on the water. Though the day started out rainy, by the afternoon it had cleared up and it promised to be nice weather for being out.

 

 

 

 

 

Boat Landing 8-8-13We weren’t the only ones on the boat. It was a bit of a water cruise thing, so we had company. That was fine, though. All that mattered was we were going to enjoy the ride together.

 

 

 

 

 

Shoreline 8-8-13As we started out along the coast the weather started to get hazy. We were a little worried, but figured that the captain knew what he was doing. We got farther and father out so that the shore became a little spot in the distance. Jay and I hadn’t realized that the ride went out so far. It was okay, though, after all this was a professional business so they knew what they were doing. We settled in for what we hoped would be an enjoyable ride.

 

The Lake 8-8-13The boat stopped. It was getting close to sunset, despite the fact that you couldn’t see it, so we figured that was why the engine had shut off.

Little groups of people conversed about this and that… chatting away and not really thinking that anything was amiss. After all, the captain didn’t seem too bothered. He kept taking big gulps from his water bottle and happily telling ‘fishing’ stories.

 

Still Waters 8-8-13The captain said that we were going to get going. I was happy about that because we hadn’t been able to see land for quite a while. I’m not really fond of boats, and especially not those that are too far out for me to feel secure in knowing we are within arms’ reach of land.

The captain turned the key… nothing. He tried again… nothing. I was starting to get concerned. I didn’t want to be stuck out in the middle of the water! I kept looking over the side of the boat, into the deep darkness below us, knowing that what swam far below us would absolutely terrify me if I had to get into that water with it.

People started to panic. One woman clung to her friend, and another woman refused to sit in her seat any longer. She instead chose to stand in the middle of the boat, clutching the post near her for support. I clung to Jay, trying to keep warm as what remained of the sun completely dimmed, and I tried to ignore the panicking of the other women. The boat began to rock violently! The captain drunkenly stumbled to the back of the boat where we sat, he paced around, and then went back to the wheelhouse. I could hear something thumping against the bottom of the boat… I tried not to panic… The boat rocked harder… At last it pitched so violently that I was ripped out of Jay’s arms and thrown into the cold water!! As I sank the light grew dimmer and I was kicking with all of my might… reaching for the surface, but it was getting farther away! Jay! Jay!!!!

“Shhh…. it’s okay! I’m right here!” he said as he wrapped me in his arms, safe in the comfort of our own bed. I gulped for air, clung to him even tighter, and tried to stop shaking. What a horrible dream!

Church Square Update 7-28-13

Church Square Pattern 5-18-13Okay, so I’m a little behind in my posts. I don’t think that it really matters too much since this is the only way that you are seeing my progress.

Here is the original, blurry, picture from the magazine where I found the pattern. Just so that you can remember what my square is attempting to look like.

Church Square 7-29-13And here is the updated picture! As you can see, I finished filling in the continents and have begun working on the backstitching of the plane. Backstitching is my favorite part of a project. Before you add in the detail lines it’s just a blob of colors. You might be able to tell what it is, but it’s kind of hazy.

To demonstrate this I made sure to take the picture after I had outlined only one of the props and left the other one as it was. There aren’t a whole lot of lines in the prop on our left, but it looks like it’s actually spinning as compared to the one on our right. Just wait until I show you what the entire plane looks like after it’s outlined….

Night Flying

Sam's New Rascal 7-21-12This is Sam’s Rascal, but since Jay has the same one (practically) and I just realized that I don’t have a picture of Jay’s (bad wife!!!) that I had to use this. Jay absolutely LOVES his Rascal.

Thus it didn’t really surprise me when he said that he wanted to put LED lights on it so that he could fly it at night. Okay… as long as he’s happy that’s all I care about.

So he bought reels of LED lights that are already soldered onto the strips. All you have to do is hook them up and turn them on. He did a lot of research and ended up buying his lights off of Amazon. I can’t recall how much he paid for them, but it was a pretty good deal. He also bought a separate controller so that he could turn them on and off while in the sky. Yes… Jay likes to push the envelope and that includes flying completely dark at night. It turned out really good! These pictures aren’t the best, but you get a little bit of an idea how it looked.

Beginning the Process 7-30-13Yes, there is something in this picture. I wanted to show you how dark it was when he was getting ready to fly. You can somewhat see the white glow of the plane in the picture.

 

 

 

 

 

Interior Lights 7-30.13This is how he thinks ahead… he placed a strip of the lights inside so that when he hooked up his receiver’s battery the strip of LED’s would turn on so that he can then see to connect the flight batteries. Why didn’t he just turn on the LED’s on the outside of the plane? Because it would have blinded him to be that close to them. This really is a good idea for any of you wishing to borrow it.

 

 

Rascal Lit Up 7-30-13And then there was light! Jay used mostly blue LED’s, but they glowed a violet color when they were against that white covering. He also used green and white on the wing tips so that he would be able to orient himself when up in the air.

 

 

 

 

 

Cliff's Senior 7-30-13One of the other guys has a SIG Senior that he put LEDs on for night flying. In fact, it was this plane that really got Jay going on installing them on the Rascal. This Senior isn’t electric… it’s gas. At this point they were trying to get it started. Hey, Cliff… “Electric don’t do that!”  Also, Cliff doesn’t have his lights running through a controller. As soon as he flips the switch on his plane they are on.

Jay 7-30-13This is how a lot of my pictures turned out that I tried to take. I obviously don’t have the best camera for taking night pictures, but it’s okay. One of the interesting things about this picture is that if you remember, Jay had red LED’s on the right wing… so you know that the plane is heading towards us.

 

 

 

 

Cliff 7-30-13This is how the Senior looked in the air. A different pattern, slightly different LED’s, and a different feel altogether. It makes for a pretty picture, though. Very Christmas-y.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hovering 7-30-13Here we go… one of the decent pictures. Jay was hovering the Rascal and then slipping into a tail slide. The two white ‘feet’ are the white LED’s that wrap around the rudder. Isn’t it neat?! You really should see it in person. Especially when Jay is flying it around and turning the lights on and off. One of the other guys started freaking out and it wasn’t even his plane!

 

 

Landing 7-30-13Coming in for a landing…

Again, if you’ve never experienced night flying you should see if any of your local clubs do it. We discussed having a night fun fly just so that everybody could light up their planes. It adds another dimension to your flying. I know that I’m definitely not good enough to do it, but I really do love watching it.

Church Square Update 7-22-13

Okay, so it’s been a while since I’ve posted. I have been really busy! I spend a lot of time outside after work now that the weather is nice. Also, our computer room is upstairs and it’s sweltering! Even with the A/C on it is still quite hot so we don’t spend a lot of time up here. You will have to wait until cooler weather before you see my regularly-posted entries.

Church Square 7-4-13This is what I had done on the square right before the long July 4th weekend. It was very warm and Jay had to work that weekend, so I decided that I was going to sit and stitch. It was rather nice! I caught up on my podcasts and really got a lot done on this square. Would you like to see just how much I got done?

 

 

 

Church Square 7-22-13Woo-hoo! We have continents and the beginning of a border. Before I can outline the plane I need to get all of the stuff behind it filled in.

I have to admit that I did make a bit of a mistake when working on the continents. I won’t tell you what, but I had to do some reworking with the colors.

Speaking of colors, the one thing that really irritated me about this pattern was the fact that they called for a specialty thread for the filling in of the continents. I can’t recall which thread company they used, but it was a specialty dyed cotton. I wanted to stick with DMC so I had to figure out how I was going to do it. I ended up picking out a yellowish color that went well with the greens for the continents. I tried the yellow by itself, but it was too much of a stark contrast. I pulled those stitches out and tried again. This time I did some tweeding. Tweeding, for you non-cross stitchers, is when you mix two threads together in one needle to get a blended shade. I used one strand of the yellow and one strand of the lightest green that I had used. It worked perfectly! I really like how it came out.

Church Squre Update 7-5-13

Church Square 7-4-13Since we’ve received quite a few rainy days I’ve had some stitching time during my lunch.

Technically I am much further along than this picture, as I sit here and type, but I haven’t had a chance to take a more recent one. This at least gives you an idea of what the plane looks like (now that it’s done and just needs to be outlined). You can see that I’m starting to get the map put in behind it. With any kind of luck it won’t take me long before I’m finishing it up!

A Prop Strike

“NO MORE EDF’S!!”

That’s what I think a propeller would write on a placard as it marched on strike. There has to be at least one sign that compares tyranny to whatever they are striking against, right? In this case I think that props would be striking against the use of Electric Ducted Fans (EDFs).

Oh, wait! That’s not the kind of prop strike that I intended to write about! Okay… let’s give this a try:

Jay's New Scar 6-29-13

My poor Sweetie! Last Saturday we went up to the field to do some flying. We were having a good time hanging out with the guys who had shown up; flying the Warthog, the F-16 and the Huey. Jay had yet to maiden the baby Rascal, aka “Alfalfa”, so he threw a battery in it, tested the motor by running it up a bit, and then deciding that all was good to go. It was wet enough, and the grass was long, so he decided that he would hand-launch this plane. I was standing back talking with Sam as I watched Jay hold the plane out in front of him, making sure to stay out of the line of the prop as he ran it up. Up goes the throttle… the prop starts turning at full speed… and just before Jay gets ready to let it go I suddenly see the prop bounce off of his face! He throttles down, drops his transmitter (hanging on the neck strap so that it just dangled) and grabbed his mouth and chin.

Sam and I went up to him and he starts pushing the plane and radio at us, to turn it off. He didn’t dare take his hand away because he wasn’t sure how bad it was. I wanted to see what damage had been done, but he refused to let me see. Jay mentioned that he could taste blood, and I saw it start to trickle between his fingers. I rushed over to the pin box and grabbed the first aid kit, looking for something to use to stop the bleeding. Luckily we have a well-stocked box for just such emergencies, and the first roll of gauze that I came to I ripped open, unrolled, and handed to him. Jay has been trained in first aid because at work he’s a first responder. I have not been formally trained in first aid, but growing up with my older sister and all of her mishaps has given me a lot of informal training.

After finally getting Jay to let me see the cut so that I could assess the damage, I was glad to see that it wasn’t as horrible as it could have been. When those APC props are flying at such high velocities they can do a LOT of damage. It had struck him on the chin and put a pretty deep gash below his lip. He was going to need stitches. At first he was being stubborn, but then he decided that perhaps he should go get it looked at. We packed up all of the planes and headed down to the Urgent Care (which is fairly close to the field). There wasn’t anybody waiting so we were able to get right in. He received five stitches and a tetanus shot, but I was happy that we had gone. I knew that there was no way I would be able to bandage it up enough for it to heal properly.  Once the stitches were in and we were out the door, it was back up to the field to fly the F-16 a few more times and then shoot the breeze with the guys.

Is there a moral to the story? I don’t think so. In every hobby there are going to be fairly risky situations, especially when it comes to working with motors and things that spin really fast. Heck, just vacuuming can be dangerous! I had an old metal Kirby come up and whack me in the forehead… twice! As long as you are taking precautions and you know what the risks are then you’ve done as much as you can do. Jay was holding the plane just as he should have, and we still can’t figure out why the prop came back at him when it should have gone out in front of him (thus the reason why he was holding it as he was). Despite what the other guys say, I did keep my cool and the first aid kit was utilized. Things happen. Jay knows this and he’s going to continue to hand launch his planes. He’s not afraid of the props, either. Like I said, he was just upset that it took time out of his flying to go get the stitches. *sigh*

Happy Independence Day

July 4th… what comes to mind when you hear that date? Do you think of parades, picnics and fireworks? Maybe that date reminds you of summer, watermelon, and playing in the sprinklers. As for me I automatically think of the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, and then my Civil War knowledge sneaks in there. I’ll share that with you, first.

If you were unaware, this year marks the 150th anniversaries of both the Battle of Gettysburg and the fall of Vicksburg. July 1 – 3, 1863 saw the Confederate army fighting around a little town in southern Pennsylvania. This was the farthest north that the Confederate Army had ever maneuvered, and they hoped to stay in the north for a while in order to give Virginia some respite from the ever-moving armies. General Robert E. Lee was actually winning on the first two days of the battle. On July 1st he managed to chase the Union army through Gettysburg and pin them on the ridges just east and southeast of the town. On the second day his men were doing some pretty good damage on Culp’s Hill and almost managed to flank the southern point of the Union line. Unfortunately there was some lagging being done by General James Longstreet, so by the time his Texans tried to take Big Round Top the Union army had already positioned a few regiments there who maintained their ground. It was the third day, July 3, when Lee should have been able to really sock it to General Meade and his Union army. Instead the Union army manages to hold its ground and inflicted some serious damage on the Confederates. Once Lee started his retreat back across the Rappahannock River he would never again lead his men onto Union soil.

At this same time in the western theater of the war, General Ulysses S Grant was laying siege to Vicksburg, Mississippi. You see, Vicksburg was located at the mouth of the Mississippi River and thus the Union needed to control that town if they were going to control the entire Mississippi (which at this point in time was a HUGE advantage to have). Grant had managed to gain control of most of the rest of the river and Vicksburg was his last obstacle. Due to the fact that it sat up high on a bluff it really wasn’t the easiest place to attack head-on. Instead, Grant decided that laying siege would work a lot better. As General William Tecumseh Sherman once said, “War is hell, boys,” and so in essence Grant was starving the people of Vicksburg so that they would surrender. He cut off their supply lines and they were left to only whatever they already had in town. This went on for a few months, and finally Vicksburg had decided that it would surrender. A person who had formerly lived in the north and knew how the Northerners thought advised them to wait until July 4th, a few days away, because he figured that if they surrendered on the Union’s day of Independence they might be a little more lenient. That’s exactly what happened, and for 81 years the city of Vicksburg refused to celebrate Independence Day.

So, what is Independence Day? It is the day that our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence where they basically told King George that we weren’t going to live under his tyrannical rule any longer. We had tried for a LONG time to discuss what was happening to us colonists over here and how we thought that we needed a stronger voice in the decisions that affected us, such as taxation and other things. We were just peon colonists, however, and weren’t capable of ruling ourselves per England’s way of thinking. Luckily for us we had some of the brightest minds in history living in our country. I want to share the Declaration of Independence with you. As you read it try to keep in mind that this was an act of rebellion and any one of these men could have been hung as traitors by the crown. This was not an easy decision for these men to make; they had to consider what could possibly happen to them and their families if they put their names to this document. Fortunately for us they decided that liberty and the ability to make our own choices was more important to them. They were willing to lay down their lives for the dream of what they thought this country could become. So many more have actually laid down their lives to protect this nation, this freedom, and what it means to people all over the world. Take a moment for serious reflection, if you could.

The Declaration of Independence

In Congress, July 4, 1776: The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. – That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, – That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

House Updates 6-30-13

I have updated you regarding our bathroom progress. Have I mentioned how much I really enjoy that room now? Jay built the structure for the shelves in the linen closet so now I actually have my linens back in the closet! I have my living room back!! Woo-hoo!!

There have been some other updates, too. I’ll start with an older one…

Night standEven though Jay and I had to combine two separate households when we bought our house and moved in, we still lacked some things. One of them was a second night stand for his bedroom set. I had one night stand, but that went with the bedroom set that I brought with me. And the 70’s olive green really didn’t go with the bedroom suite that Jay owned. I thought that it should be easy to find another regular wood night stand.

I was wrong. So, in the meantime, I used this box. It worked! All that I needed was something to hold my alarm clock, glasses, and whatever other miscellaneous things I might have. As you can see, Chester didn’t seem to mind it.

 

New Night StandThen my mother-in-law was cleaning out a spare room and came across this stand. I popped into her head and she knew that she had to bring it over for me. She wasn’t using it and she knew that I could put it to good use. It is so nice because I no longer have to worry about the box collapsing. Also, it looks a lot nicer. lol

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Stemware ShelfAnother feature that we’ve added is the stemware shelf in the kitchen. We had a LOT of stemware, but very little space. Jay made a shelf, and after I had stained it the same color as the bookshelves he made me for Christmas, he poly’d it and put it up. It looks so nice and I’m very happy with it! I no longer have wine glasses sitting on the counter taking up space. Woo-hoo!

 

I think that’s all I have to update you on for now. We are discussing the fact that we have to do something with our driveway (putting down more stone vs possibly cementing it), and then we have to insulate the outside walls. Unfortunately none of those really make for good blog posts. Now that it’s summer we are out flying more, too. I’ll have to remember to take my camera with me so that I can post about that.

Church Square Update 6-26-13

Church Square Pattern 5-18-13In case you have forgotten, this is my current cross stitch project. It’s for the wall hanging at church and I’m modifying the pattern a little bit to have mine and Jay’s names on it.

I don’t have a lot of time to stitch, though, because it’s now summer and I’m busy. Very busy. In fact, I’m not on the computer nearly as much as I used to be, as you can tell by the infrequent blog posts lately. This has definitely bitten into my stitching time.

 

 

Church Square 5-17-13The last time that I updated my blog with my cross stitching this is how my squared looked. Remember, I’m using waste canvas so that I can stitch on the felt square. That has been an interesting experience! I’m not sure how it’s going to look after I remove the waste canvas.

 

 

 

 

Cross Stitch Church Square 6-26-13Since I’m not allowed to check my personal email during my lunch break at work (which is when I typically did all of my emailing) I’ve had more time to spend working on my stitching. Most of this progress has happened in the last three weeks. Hopefully I can keep up the pace!

Work… It’s A Living

Me Carrying Jay Into the Reception - Betsy's picIf you haven’t been keeping up with my blog, I got married back in November. After being married for three weeks my new husband and I signed the closing papers on our new house and we could finally live together. I absolutely LOVE our house. The only problem with it was that my commute to work was 50 minutes in good weather. We won’t even discuss how long it was when the lake effect snows were blowing.

I started looking for a job closer to home. With my husband and I working different hours I had barely ten minutes with him in the morning, and then barely an hour with him at night when he was on ten hour shifts. People roll their eyes and mumble either, “newlyweds!” or “rookies” when we mention how much we love spending time with each other and how it makes us miserable to not be able to see each other. I was coming home miserable from work, and then being miserable for the first hour after I got home… in time to send my husband off to work. It really shows how much he loves me that he was able to put up with me during that time.

Luckily I found a job just a short 15 minute drive from home. It’s not the same type of job that I did for the last eight years, but it was somewhat familiar to me and I knew that I could learn how to do it. I needed a change. I could feel the depression taking hold and I drove to work each day hoping that I would get fired. I couldn’t afford to quit, but if I got fired then it wouldn’t have been a decision that I made. Right? Somehow I could justify that, and that’s also how I knew that it was time to get out.

This is my fourth week of work at the new place and I’m still enjoying myself. The best thing about it, though, is that Jay has mentioned how much happier I am now. The fact that he has mentioned that a few times goes to show just how miserable I must have really been before. At the new job I don’t have to do journal entries… I don’t have to worry about month end closing… I am busy ALL DAY so I don’t have to pretend to work… my coworkers are nice… the meetings are chock full of actual business-related info and very little gossip or vapid chit-chatting.

I’ll admit that the first day was a bit of a struggle. At my previous job I was the one in my department who everybody went to when they had questions. I was the one with all of the answers… I knew just about everything related to my department and people respected me for my knowledge and experience. I am not a stupid person, not by far, but at the end of my first day I felt like the dumbest person in the galaxy. I had worked with components in my previous job, but it was all on paper. Now I’m actually expected to know what they look like, what they do, and certain info regarding how they work and how they go together. I wasn’t allowed to go out on the floor and study the processes at my old job because they needed me at my desk. They could send my incompetent coworker and my boss out to inventory training in Colorado, but I wasn’t allowed to spend a week in one of our own facilities to watch how we assembled and manufactured our own products. I could have used some of that information for my new job!

Again, my husband is so wonderful and good to me. When I started to tear up after my first day at work he gave me a hug and told me that I wasn’t stupid, but that there was definitely going to be a learning curve. He pointed out that my new employers had obviously seen my intelligence and potential since they hired me with the up-front knowledge that I had never done that kind of work before. I really love my husband. He is so good to me and for me!

After three full weeks I am starting to feel more comfortable in my job. I’m still learning, but I feel like I’m not contributing to the department instead of being yet another task that my coworker has to take care of among everything else she’s doing. I really like my new boss. He’s very down-to-earth and no-nonsense. There is not even a HINT of bobble-headedness about him!

The best thing? It only takes me about 15 minutes to get home at night to see my husband. Tonight as I was driving home I was reveling in my happiness. Before I married my husband I lived only 15 minutes from my old job, but I never looked forward to actually going home to my house. I didn’t like my house. There were lots of negative feelings that I had towards that place. Now, though, I look forward to going home to my husband AND the house! Life is definitely good! I am very blessed. 🙂
