Dresses for Missions Update 5-14-14

Since sending the last package out I have not been keeping up with my goal of making one dress per week. Life gets in the way and before I know it two weeks have gone by without anything to show for it. I have managed to sew together three more dresses, though.

Dresses for Missions #13 4-20-14Dress #13

My mom gave me this pillowcase and I was quickly inspired. I didn’t want it to be too froo-froo, but I knew that it had to have a hint of girliness to match the flowers. The flowers are bright yellow and orange with accents of a deep pink. I found just the right pink in my collection of binding, and then I saw the spool of green ribbon and knew that it would set off the hem beautifully. I wanted something a little different, so I added the offset bow. I think that it turned out nice.

Dresses for Missions #14 4-26-14Dress #14

I found this fabric in the red dot fabric section of JoAnn’s. It has such a fun print on it that I was worried about not getting the right look for it. With so much going on I didn’t want the poor girl to be overwhelmed. I knew that it had to have a wide ruffle to make it twirly, so that was easy. Luckily I had the right color red ribbon to set it all off.

Dress #14 HemHere’s a close-up of the material…

Ice cream cones and popsicles! What could be better? And of course, the lace on the hem to make it feminine.

Dresses for Missions #15 5-3-14Dress #15

This one was a little harder. It’s not easy to find ribbon or lace in a deep dark blue. I was given these pillowcases and I knew that I had to fancy them up a little. I have three more of these pillow cases and am trying to find different ways to dress them up. I don’t want any of them to look the same. What fun would that be??

I do worry about the pillow case dresses, though. When I was first starting to make these I was looking for ideas and came across a website for another Dresses for Missions group in the Midwest. These ladies, however, would not accept any dresses actually made out of pillow cases. They said that the pillow case dresses weren’t very fancy or pretty and so they wanted you to sew other designs of sun dresses for the girls who would receive them. Originally my group was told not to do anything too fancy because they wanted us to churn these out at a decent rate. I can completely understand that desire, but I can’t bring myself to make a dress without adding my own touches to it. I guess that I just want to give every little girl who gets one of my dresses the feeling that she has something beautiful and special. Whether I add lace or a big ol’ ruffle, I want her to put it on and have the instant desire to twirl around in it.

Ribbon & Lace StashIn order to accomplish this, I’ve managed to create an ever-growing collection of ribbon and lace. My biggest issue, though, is that I hate paying full price for them. I’m so cheap! What I do is stalk the red dot clearance fabric to score good deals on the material, and then I’ve discovered that almost every other week Hobby Lobby puts their spooled ribbon and lace on sale for 50% off. Even if it’s not on sale, if I happen across a spool of trim that I know instantly which fabric I can pair it with, it goes in the cart. If I keep adding to my collection, though, I might have to ask Jay to design something that I can use to better organize it.

Spool OrganizersLike I did with my spools of thread and bobbins. As you’ve noticed, I sew many different colors of dresses so I keep spools of thread on hand to quickly switch out when needed. I was running into the issue where I would have to rustle around to find the bobbin with the correct color thread, and when I grabbed it I would often end up grabbing the end of another bobbin and unwinding it. It was getting a bit irritating.

I asked Jay if he could please print something for me that would keep the pairs together in an organized fashion. I did a VERY rough and bad sketch of what I had in mind and he did the rest. Isn’t it great??

Spool and Bobbin OrganizerDue to the size, the rods that he originally designed to print on the platforms didn’t work out. They kind of just smudged together. Instead he designed holes in the platforms and then used some tubing that he had for airplane stuff to make the rods that spear my spools and bobbins.

Aren’t they great?!

3D Printed Cookie CuttersSpeaking of the 3D printer, I’ll post this update here for you. Remember these cookie cutters that I told you Jay had made for me?

3D Printed Cookie Cutter CookiesCat Cookies!!!! Jay did a great job with this. The tails didn’t break off when removing them from the sheet of dough. What made me laugh, though, is that if you look closely at the cat that is standing up (kind of in the middle bottom area of the picture) you can see that when it baked it browned on all of the points… just like a Siamese! Awww…. kitties!!!

Winter Cross Update 5-10-14

Winter Cross 4-12-14I guess that it’s been almost a month since I posted an updated picture of my project. Though I haven’t been posting, I’ve managed to get a little bit of time to stitch. It usually only amounts to about 15-20 minutes a day, but it’s helping me keep my sanity.

At work we’ve had a lot of stuff suddenly dumped onto my department so I’ve been bringing work home. All work and no sewing makes Kerry a grumpy woman!

Winter Cross 5-10-14You can see a little bit of progress. It seems like I should have had more done in a month. I remember the days when I used to be able to get a good portion of a project done in a month. Of course, that was back when I was still living at home and had three to four hours a night for cross stitching!

I guess that it’s a good thing I started with the Winter Cross. I would have been terribly disappointed if I had started with the Spring or Summer Cross and had to wait a year to display it. I think that I should have this one done by the time December 21st rolls around. I plan on changing out the seasonal crosses on the official first days of the seasons. It will be so great when all four of them are done!

3D Printing

Have you noticed that there haven’t been any new posts on my blog for Jay’s jets? That’s because there hasn’t been a whole lot of jet building lately. It’s all my fault. I will completely take the blame for this one.

Jay on the Lake 8-8-13My problem is that I love my husband so much that I tend to spoil him. Or open up giant cans of worms…

It started with the FPV kit that I bought him for Christmas. He started getting involved with electronics, programming quad boards, and figuring out how to make his current set up go even further.

To help him with this I bought a copy of Make magazine. This magazine is a bunch of DIY projects that encompass wood working, electronics, crafting, etc. The copy that I picked up had a large amount of articles in it regarding quadcopters, FPV flying, and their electronics. What I didn’t realize was that it also had enough in there about 3D Printers that it piqued Jay’s curiosity. He talked about getting a 3D printer and I told him to do the research and figure out which model he wanted (there are a bunch of them) and then we could discuss getting one.

Jay set right to work doing the research and decided that he wanted a Printrbot. I know nothing about 3D printers, so I just asked him the price range. He told me the price and then said, “But the best part is that we save $100 by buying the kit instead of getting it fully assembled. I get to put it together!!” Yes, that was one of the most exciting parts for Jay. I was informed that if he had purchased one that came assembled he would just disassemble it to see how it works anyway. *sigh* Boys…

3D Printing AreaI decided that this would be his birthday gift. His mom chipped in and helped with the cost so that he could get it even sooner. You can’t see it from this picture, but he has actually built a rack system above the printer to hold the spools of plastic filament so that they can more easily be pulled by the machine.

3d Printing Layer 1If you’ve never seen a 3D printer before, or even heard of it, I’ll try to give you an easy overview. Essentially you use a computer program to draw out parts that you want to print in plastic. The software tells the machine where to move, and thus it lays down a layer of plastic. The machine will extrude the melted plastic (very similar to how a hot glue gun works) layer by layer until it has completely built the part.

3d Printing FillerIn this picture Jay is printing out four quad arms (of his own design) and what I think are four spacers.

It will do the outline first, and then begin to fill in. It doesn’t sound very interesting, but it’s amazing how quickly you get sucked into watching it. You completely lose track of time. It’s quite hypnotizing.

3D Printing 2It doesn’t use a lot of plastic, nor do the parts get heavy, because you tell the program how much filler you want. You can kind of see it here in this picture how it has created a honeycomb pattern in the middle. This is to create the support structure for the layers that go on top of it, without using up a lot of plastic.

3d Printed Pile of Quad ArmsThis is what the quad arms look like when they are completely finished.

Are you wondering just what could you possibly use a 3D printer for? Let me give you a little preview…

3D Printed QuadYou can design and build your own quadcopter. The best thing about this is if you break an arm all you have to do is print another one. Or, Jay made a whole new plastic part for a friend’s landing gear. It worked like a charm and now the friend doesn’t have to replace expensive gear due to a tiny little plastic part that broke.

3D Printed parts boxNot into quads? Okay, then how about a compartmented box for your small hardware?

3D Printed eCig HolderPerhaps maybe a custom holder for your eCigarette?

3D Printed Gear CoastersIs there an engineer or mechanic in the family? How about a set of gear drink coasters? Yes, if you fit the teeth together they will all turn…

3D Printed FrogDo you want something fun? How about a little frog that actually glows in the dark?

3D Printed Abraham LincolnHaven’t you ever said to yourself, “Man, if I only had a 3D printed Abraham Lincoln!”

3D Printed Lincoln for ScaleEven the cats can get some enjoyment out of Lincoln…

3D Printed OwlIs Lincoln not to your taste? Are you more of an animal person? What about an owl?

This one always looks like a white chocolate art piece… I have to remind myself not to try to bite into it.

3D Printed Cookie CuttersIf you’re utilitarian, like myself, then do something practical and print up a set of cookie cutters. After all, shouldn’t everybody have a cat cookie cutter? This set is VERY practical, too. The purple one glows in the dark so if the power goes out I can still cut out cat-shaped cookies!

3D Printed Fails3D printing is an art form and science all rolled up into one. Not every piece is going to be perfect. In fact, you will have some that don’t go very well at all for one reason or another. Here is the pile of ‘Oops’ that Jay has managed to create. They are all learning experiences, though, and luckily the cost of plastic isn’t too bad.

3D Printed Frog BlobThis is my favorite ‘Oops’. lol

Something happened while trying to print the frog. Jay had walked away from the machine and came back to what looks like a melted frog. Frog legs anybody??

3D Printed YodaMay the force be with you…

And if you would like to see what else can be created using a 3D printer please visit Thingiverse where you can get lost just looking at all of the different items out there that can be printed.

My Baptism

Kerry Baptism 1This past weekend I was baptized, confirmed and took first communion in the Catholic Church. It was a big step for me because my family has not ever been overly religious. My parents never had me or my sisters baptized when we were babies. They wanted us to chose our own faith. They had been forced to attend church when they were children and so they promised that they wouldn’t do that to their kids. After getting married and attending the Catholic Church since that time I decided that perhaps I would go down the path of joining the Catholic Church.

Church Program 1985I come from a long line of Methodists. My younger sister and I used to attend Sunday School at my mom’s church, the same one where my parents had been married. Most of the people in my hometown attended our little country church.

When I was in first grade our church received a new minister. I don’t remember much about him, but I definitely remember his kids. They were not nice girls. The oldest one was arrested for shoplifting from the department store where she worked, and the youngest one was constantly leading other kids into trouble and then pinning it on them. My sister was accused of misbehaving quite a few times due to this girls’ inability to get herself into trouble.

Kerry Church Program 1986I’m not sure what I’m reciting in this picture, but I do know that this was the last time we ever attended this church. This was our Christmas program in 1986. At this service the minister announced that he fully expected everybody to give the church at least 10% of what they had spent on gifts that year. That was the last straw for my dad; he basically forbid us from ever attending that particular church while the minister presided over it. The sad thing is that we weren’t the only family who left… this minister ended up chasing most of the people off. On Sunday morning the parking lot used to be overflowing with people having to park on the road. Now if you drive by there you’re lucky if you see a dozen cars.

I can name numerous situations where somebody has harassed me with their religion or tried to tell me how sinful I was and that God would never accept me into Heaven if I didn’t accept what they were trying to get me involved in. Oh, and then there was the Born-Again Methodist Minister who married my aunt and ended up taking her for a financial ride that cost her a lot just to get out of the marriage. The last I knew he was working on some other hot young thing who had money and no husband.

Because I didn’t have any other background, and I was going on limited knowledge, there came a point in my life where I decided that if there truly was a God and He loved me, then why would he let so many terrible things happen to me and my family? I can almost remember the moment when I gave up on Him and decided that He didn’t exist. Instead of looking for a better answer, though, I shut Him out.

Helen and IDuring college I started exploring other religions. I had this missing piece of me and I was trying to find it. For a while I explored Wicca. My closest friend in college was Wiccan and I thought that maybe I had discovered something that really felt “right”. I enjoyed going to Mediums and getting a reading done. I had a deck of Tarot Cards that I messed around with, though I never felt like I really could get anything out of them.

After college I kind of listed here and there. Wicca really wasn’t right for me, and I knew that. Yet, what was? I knew that I wasn’t an Atheist or an Agnostic. There was something much bigger than all of us, I was sure about that. But what?

I spent quite a few years trying to figure out my faith. It was strange because in college I was surrounded by friends who were VERY strong in their faiths. All of them, except my Wiccan friend, had a very good relationship with God. They were all strong believers and I envied that. Yet, I was raised by parents who felt that to believe in God you didn’t need to attend church or read the Bible. Faith was just that… faith. You just had to believe. Not that it’s necessarily wrong, but I guess that I needed something more.

To be completely honest, my journey to Catholicism began in 2008 when I started listening to Glenn Beck’s radio program. I’ve tried to remember how I was introduced to Glenn’s program, but honestly I have no clue. It seems like I just suddenly started listening to him out of the blue. He kept talking about how we had to return to what had made us strong; Faith, Hope and Charity. Despite what many people might think, Glenn was not one to “preach” or shove his religion down your throat. Maybe that’s what caught my attention. When he did talk about God he talked in a way that made sense to me. Glenn made me think that maybe I had been wrong and maybe God actually did exist. Perhaps I should start to explore this a little more.

Since I was raised a Methodist I returned to my roots and attended a Methodist church a few times. It was nice, but it didn’t leave me feeling like I had found what I was searching for. It could have just been the church itself, and not necessarily the faith, that made me feel this way. I was in search of God, but where would I find Him?

082810pic08As soon as I heard Glenn Beck mention that he was going to hold a Restoring Honor rally at the Lincoln Memorial in D.C. I knew that I had to attend. Leading up to this event we didn’t know how many people were going to show up. It wasn’t a political rally. It was about Faith, Honor and standing up for what you believed. I remember that Glenn kept saying that he didn’t even know how many people would join him there. He worried that nobody would show up. Let me tell you, there were close to 300,000 people on the mall that day. With all of the speeches that I heard and all of the things that were experienced, the one thing that I vividly remember is standing in that crowd and hearing everybody sing Amazing Grace. It gives me chills just thinking about it.

After that rally I was on a mission. I knew that there was a God and I was determined to know Him. I bought my own Bible and began reading it. I began praying, though I wasn’t sure that I was doing it right. I talked to others about their faith and tried to determine what it was that I was looking for. Then I met Jay, and by extension, his mom. I had never attended a Catholic church and the only exposure that I’d had up to this point was to a few wedding ceremonies that I’d attended. I knew the stereotypes and I’d heard certain jokes being made about Catholic practices. Oh, and I had watched “The Exorcist.”

Curiosity got the better of me and I asked Jay’s mom if I could attend church with her one Sunday. I actually think that it was Easter Sunday that I asked to attend with her. I remember feeling intimidated by all of the things that I didn’t know about the mass. I was confused about why they were doing certain things and what it all meant. I had really been disappointed when we had walked into the church and I didn’t see a single piece of stained glass. Their church was fairly new so it wasn’t one of the old Catholic Churches that people often think of with the super-high ceilings and the saints staring down at you through their vividly colored panes of glass. This church didn’t have that austere, cold and overwhelming feel that most churches have. This one was cozy, warm, and welcoming. The people whom I met that day were very nice, too. Yet, I felt odd. I didn’t know any of the hymns, they didn’t have a choir, and the motions were alien to me. Finally, though, there was something that I could join in on… the Our Father. I knew that one!

Mr and Mrs Jay Raydo When Jay and I decided to get married part of that decision involved attending church. He had grown up in the Catholic church and we both felt that we needed God as part of our marriage. We joined his mom’s church (which absolutely thrilled her!) and we began attending regularly. I never meant to convert. It wasn’t a condition of marrying in the Catholic Church and that was fine with me. Shortly after we were married the church hired a new music director and a choir was formed. I have always loved music and this gave me a chance to be part of a choir again, so I joined. Then I found myself helping Karen, my mother-in-law, at some of the church functions. I saw the need for people to make casseroles for the Casserole ministry at church… so I signed up. The people in the parish were so warm and welcoming, and they accepted me right away. All I had to do was say, “I’m Karen’s daughter-in-law” and they knew exactly who I was.

One day I thought about it… here I was attending mass every Sunday, I was participating in a lot of church activities, and I really enjoyed what I was learning. If we had kids how would I explain to them why I would be part of the Catholic Church without actually being Catholic? I was allowed to choose my own faith. I had never been baptized. I contacted the Religious Education lady at church and began participating in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults classes that the church offered. It was quite the process, but one in which I was never rushed or felt like I was forced into. The women who are part of the group are wonderful and made the entire journey so enjoyable. I never felt afraid to ask a question or volunteer my thoughts on something.

The only thing that ever gave me trouble about the process was the fact that I was afraid to tell my parents. I knew that they really didn’t hold Catholicism in high esteem and I never want to disappoint them. In my heart, though, I knew that I was making the right choice for myself. So I took the “plunge.”

Easter Vigil 2014 007At the Easter Vigil I was baptized. Everybody was so excited for me. I was a bit anxious, again I was worried about disappointing my parents, but yet I was looking forward to it, too.

I don’t remember a whole lot of the detail. They did a good job making sure that the water I had to kneel in was warm. And the priest really enjoyed pouring the water over me!

Easter Vigil 2014 009I was dressed in my scrubs, with my hair pulled back into a bun, and I listened to the priest say whatever it was that he was saying while I wondered how many times he was going to pour the water over me.

Kerry Baptism 11I have had numerous people who were in attendance that night tell me that as I came up out of the water, I was glowing.

Kerry Baptism 10Glowing? Dripping wet, yes, but glowing?

When I asked Jay about it he said, “Yes, you were all smiles and doing that glowing thing that you do when you are really happy.” Another parishioner told me that her granddaughter was amazed and remarked, “Nana, how can she smile so much when she’s all wet??”

Looking back I don’t remember smiling. I remember being worried about dripping water on the church’s carpeted floor. The biggest thing, though, was the feeling of warmth and love that I felt. There were so many people there that night who were so happy for me that I felt completely surrounded by love in all of its forms. So, perhaps I was glowing.

Easter Vigil 2014 013Before kicking me out to change, I was presented with one of the priest’s robes to use as my baptismal gown. Sue, one of our RCIA leaders, was so thrilled and excited for me. She had the biggest smile on her face!

Kerry Baptism 2Decked out in my robe I was confirmed and then took part in my first communion (with a gluten free host, of course!). The priest must have thought that I needed all the help that I could get and he was VERY generous with the anointing oil. So much that I had to wipe the excess that kept running down my forehead for the rest of the service. lol  Later in the car Jay said that it smelled like ‘old priest’. LOL

Easter Vigil 2014 018It was a long journey, but one that I’m glad I took. There were two other guys in the RCIA classes with me who were confirmed and brought into the church Saturday night, too. This has been quite the experience for all of us. We’ve made some new friends and learned a lot about ourselves along the way. I will actually miss the classes now that they are done.

Oh, and I feel like I’m becoming part of the parish and am not just “Karen’s daughter-in-law.” I had a woman recognize me in the grocery store and she asked if I was part of the choir at our church. I told her that I was and she became all smiles and told me what a wonderful job that I do. It really made me feel good. I feel like I’m part of the community and that I belong there. It’s a wonderful feeling.

Dresses for Missions 4-16-14

I have an update on the Dresses for Missions Ministry that I am participating in through my church. We were able to ship 5 boxes of things to Haiti for Easter. This is what was sent:

181 Dresses!! (our original goal was 100)

426 pairs of underwear

59 receiving blankets

131 baby hats

11 boys shorts

29 t-shirts

8 blankets

How great is that??!! We are still continuing to collect things to ship. I haven’t had the time to sew lately, though, so I’m not keeping up with my goal of one dress a week. In fact, I have barely managed to average 1/2 a dress a week!

Dress #11 3-30-14Dress #11…

Because I really like the looks of the dresses with the ruffles I have decided that I will make all of them with one from now on. That adds more time because making the ruffle and sewing it on adds about an extra hour and a half to my sewing time. It really makes the dresses even cuter, though.

Dress #12 4-5-14Dress #12…

This one was a bit tougher for me. I wasn’t sure if the pattern was too bold. I had the perfect ribbon for it, but something just kept telling me that it wasn’t complete. When I had finished it and stepped back… I liked what I saw. I’m still iffy on the pattern (and it looks much better in person), but my mom really liked it. She has good taste when it comes to this kind of thing so I’m not going to worry about it anymore. It’s a larger size so I’m thinking that an older girl will be more likely to get it. I hope that it makes her feel beautiful.

That’s all that I have done for now. I have some blankets in the works and more material for dresses. In fact, I just had a handful of pillow cases given to me so perhaps I will use those this next week!

Winter Cross Update 4-12-14

April is already half over! Where did it go?? I wish that I could say I had been enjoying the spring weather by cleaning up the yard and getting my gardens ready for planting. Nope. We are still dealing with snow. Yep. Two weeks ago today we received about 6″ of the sloppy, slushy and wet stuff. It was gone pretty much within the next day. Mother Nature has been very bipolar. Today we are enjoying a day where the temps are in the 60’s. By this time next week we are supposed to receive more snow. I’m so tired of the ups and downs!

Luckily, to keep myself sane, I’ve been able to find some time to cross stitch.

Winter Cross 3-16-14Here was the winter cross almost a month ago. I had just finished doing as much outlining as I could. It was time to start moving onto the rest of the cross.

Winter Cross 4-12-14There hasn’t been a whole lot added, but I guess enough to show some progress. I’ve been averaging about 15-20 minutes on it Monday thru Friday.

It’s a good thing that I started this one first. I *might* have it done by the time it should be displayed!

Am I Beautiful?

This year for Lent I decided that I wasn’t going to give up a certain type of food, my sweet tea, or anything like that. I wanted to make a real change in my life much like I did last year when I gave up swearing for Lent. It really helped to cut back the amount of swearing that I do now. Yes, I do still curse and swear now and again, but not like I used to.

Jay and Me 8-7-11

So this year I decided that I would give up calling myself fat. I know that it hurts Jay when I do that and I really don’t want to hurt him. Also, we were all made in God’s image so I am disrespecting His handiwork when I put myself down like that. I have to admit that it’s harder than I expected it to be. I never realized how many ways there were that I actually do this.

And then I saw this video:

Apparently this is an older video that Dove used for an ad campaign last year. I don’t watch a lot of TV so I never saw it. When I watched it, though, it really made me stop and think.

How many women do you know who shy away from the camera? When I was in college I watched two friends fight over a camera because one was trying to take a picture of the other. I can’t tell you how many pictures I have of friends where their hands are in front of their faces. I will admit that I’ve even done it myself.

When you do see a picture of yourself what’s the first thing that you think? “Oh, I look awful!” “My hair is sticking out all over!” “Look at how fat I am!” Do I need to go on?

Kerry As A Fashionista

Millions of dollars are spent on cosmetics, clothes, and beauty aids every year. Magazines scream at us about the latest fad diet or the exercises to do that will allow you to slim down in 10 easy minutes a day. On TV the most admired and most desirable female characters are those who are played by beautiful and very thin actresses. We are conditioned, as women, to search out our flaws in the hopes of correcting them. With all of this why is it surprising that behave as we do when a camera is turned on us?

When I was younger I loved being in pictures. My younger sister was going through our pictures during her senior year of high school because the yearbook wanted to publish baby pictures of the senior class. She had a VERY hard time finding a picture with just her in it because it seemed like I was in ALL of the pictures with her… including one that she had thought at the time she was in by herself.

Me and Kimberly

We need to realize that we are all beautiful no matter what we’ve been conditioned to think. It will take some work, but I know that we can do it. We owe it to our loved ones. It hurts them when we put ourselves down in any way. Why would you want to do that? It’s going to take longer than just a Lenten season, but I know that we can do it. Remember, God made you in His image. That alone makes you beautiful. Go ahead. Be your Beautiful self.

Dresses for Missions 3-17-14

I showed you the first four dresses that I made for the Dresses for Missions project at my church:

Dresses for Missions 1-4 2-23-14

There was a deadline of the first weekend in March to have as many turned in as possible. The ladies who are coordinating this project wanted to have as many dresses as possible to ship to Haiti in time for the girls to be able to wear them on Easter. So I continued sewing…

???????????????????????????????Dress #5

This one was harder because the material was already so busy. It also didn’t lend itself well to fancy lace. I went simple and just added a touch at the hem and then used black bias tape for the straps.

???????????????????????????????Dress #6

This is the matching pillow case to the other dress that I made in the first batch. I did something very similar, but with different lace.

???????????????????????????????Dress #7

I had purchased some really wide brown lace for this material. I decided to use it at the hem. I think that it gave an interesting look to it. I have more of this material and hope to brighten the next dress up a bit with different trim.

???????????????????????????????Dress #8

I was really looking forward to using this material. As I was sewing, however, I ran out of white thread and had to use an old spool. I thought it would be okay, but that thread was just VERY poor quality so it got tossed. With the frustration of that I ran out of creative steam and this is what I came up with.

Dresses for Missions #9Dress #9

The first 8 dresses had been turned in so I figured that I would have more time to work on the next group. There wasn’t a deadline (that I’d been told) so I wanted to do more dresses with the ruffles on the bottom. I really liked the look of the pink dress that I’d done that on. I think that this one really turned out cute.

Then I received a call and was asked if I had anymore dresses ready to go. They were going to ship them out in two days, but wanted to have as many as possible. I really only had one more night to work on them, so I did what I could.

This picture isn’t the best because I didn’t have a lot of bright light. I prefer to take pictures of the dresses during the day, but that wasn’t an option for this one.

I like the brightness of the material, but the lack of time and urgent need really sapped the creative juices out of me. I intend on using more ruffles in the future.

So, those are my dresses so far. I am hoping to sew at least one dress a week for now until I hear of the next deadline. I need a little bit of time for my cross stitching and piano playing… oh, and blog posting!

Winter Cross Project 3-16-14

Winter Cross 2-1-14I have been so busy sewing dresses that I didn’t have a lot of time to cross stitch.

I had just finished the lettering in the background when I took a picture of this on Feb 1st.

Winter Cross 3-16-14And this is what it looks like with most of the outlining done on the left hand side of the cross. There are still some details left to do, but I wanted to move onto the next part. I was tired of backstitching.

I have to admit that this is one of my favorite parts of cross stitching. The first picture in this post looks really good and you can tell what it’s supposed to be, but the backstitching in the second picture just really makes it pop!

Yellow A4 Skyhawk Project – #5

A4 Put TogetherHere we are, back with the A4 Skyhawk. It’s really starting to come together!

A4 Tail Glued and FilledWe have glued the tail on after priming it.

Then we did some caulking along the seam.

We promised it that if it behaves we’ll take it out flying this summer.

A4 Two Wings GluedCarefully we glued our wings on after doing a bit of priming on them.

The jet wanted a racing stripe, but Jay had to insist that the racing strip doesn’t go along the joint of the wing. Poor little jet!

A4 BellyAnd now it’s time for a belly rub!

Who’s a good jet? Hmm?? Who’s a good jet?!!? That’s right! You’re a good jet!! Yes you is!!!

A4 Strut MillingWhile the jet is napping we will begin making some legs for it to stand on. This will be mostly in girl-language, so if you’re a guy who is reading this you might want to get somebody of the female persuasion to translate for you.

First you want to put the metal rod in the big holding-thingy on your lathe. Make sure that you have the metal rod marked where you want to make your cuts.

A4 Strut MIlling 2After you have made a series of passes with the pointy-red-thingy you will begin whittling it down so that you are tapering the end that goes from the big end of the rod to the little end.

A4 Strut Milling 3

Make sure to do a dry fit with the other piece that will slide down over the rod you are milling so that you know when to stop.

A4 Strut Milling 5Voila! You magically will end up with something that looks like this –>

I might have missed a step or three… Hmm..

A4 Strut PiecesHopefully at some point you will end up with pretty pieces like these ones. If not, don’t worry. Just call up Jay and ask him to make you a set. I promise that I won’t narrate that process for you, if you do call.

Jay likes to build his own landing gear because typically they are sturdier than the silly little wires that come on the landing gear. Also, it gives him a chance to design something and use his lathe.

It’s a short post this time, but we’re getting close to the end. At least, I’m at the end of the pictures at my disposal. Stay tuned for more!
