My Kavalier 1-25-13

Fuselage 1-21-13It has been a few days since I posted the progress on my Kavalier. Jay has managed to get a LOT done on it and so I wanted to show it off a bit.

He assembled the fuselage and rounded the edges beautifully! You can’t tell, but I placed the fuselage on the stabilizer that was drying with weight on it to keep it from warping.

Front of Fuselage 1-21-13Here’s the inside of the fuselage where the batteries will sit. You can see the supports that Jay had to machine for the motor. He’s so good with his hands!

I double checked with him and he did a good job of reinforcing where the landing gear attaches to the plane. It is fixed gear and last year I had a bit of a problem with my landings. They were a tad bit rough and so I took the gear off of the LT a few times. Oops!

Shaped Leading Edge 1-21-13Here is the wing prior to the wing tip being glued on and the edges being shaped. I wanted to show you just how sharp the edges appear before Jay attacked it with the sanding block.

Shaped Wing TipSee… it looks so much nicer now! The wing tips are blocks of balsa that you glue on and then do a LOT of sanding to get it shaped just the way that you want. This is a completely manual process and I believe that Jay did a great job with it. When you close your eyes and run your fingers over it you can’t even feel the seam where they are glued together! Yes, I did do that. lol

My Kavalier 1-24-13And here it is! Yeah!! Obviously it’s not in flying condition. It still needs to be covered, have the electronics run, and the elevator and ailerons actually attached (I believe that they are just taped right now), but look at how pretty it is already!!

Kavalier ColorsThese are the colors that will be used on the Kavalier. I was allowed to choose them myself. For some reason everybody thinks that I would choose pink. YUCK!! Why would I choose pink??! If you know me at all, you might have a bit of an idea what color scheme I’m going for with these colors. Can you guess? Do you know?

This is my inspiration:

Football Hall of Fame 001

*sigh* Isn’t he wonderful? I could just swoon right now! I took this picture when Sarah and I went to the Football Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio a few years ago. If you have no clue who this is, it’s Dan Marino! He was arguably one of the best quarterbacks during his time in the NFL. No, he never won a Super Bowl, but he broke a LOT of records and is just plain awesome. Besides, have you seen his eyes? STUNNING!! So, yes, I will have a Miami Dolphins themed plane. I’m tempted to call it Marino 13… get it? Instead of Marine 1 😉 Yes, I know that Marine 1 is a helicopter, but it’s my plane so I can call it whatever I want! :-p

Huey Helicopter

Now that we are all moved into our house and getting it to feel more like our home, Jay has begun to work on various projects. First there were my bookshelves (which I LOVE) and then he started to work on my Kavalier. He has also started to work on another project for a guy in our R/C club.

This is the Bell UH-1H Iroquois helicopter (image pulled from the Museum of Flight’s website), otherwise known as the “Huey”. Some people might think that helicopters are like tadpoles, they all look alike. Believe me, I know what you mean! Until I met Jay the only reason why I could pick out the F4U Corsair was because of the unique wings.

Anyway, this helicopter might look familiar to you because whenever you see old footage of the Vietnam War where our troops are being dropped into battle or the wounded are being pulled out of the jungle, the helicopter used was the Huey.

The gentleman from our club used to be a pilot in Vietnam and he flew this helicopter a lot. When he saw what was possible to do in the R/C world he asked Jay if it would be possible to get a scale replica of the Huey. Jay did a lot of research and finally found a kit that he felt would work for this guy. I have to admit that it looks pretty neat in person, and it’s going to look really neat when Jay gets it all put together and adds the details to it.

1-21-13 6Here it is sitting on the work bench. This heli isn’t meant to do acrobatic stunts or do a lot of flip-flopping stuff. It will be flown scale, which will really look neat.

1-21-13 5This is actually a two part helicopter. Let me explain what I mean… You buy the Chaos helicopter, and then you buy the fiberglass Huey kit that you build the Chaos into. The paint job on the original fiberglass body is gorgeous (even if a bit scary with the skull staring you in the face).

1-21-13 3All of the mechanics end up in the doghouse of the helicopter. You can somewhat see the motor that Jay has chosen to use, a gorgeous Scorpion motor from Innov8tive Designs based out of California. If you’ve ever listened to the podcast All Things That Fly then you’ll know that Lucian on that show owns Innov8tive Designs and answers a lot of questions about power systems. The Scorpion motor comes beautifully packaged, too! It almost makes you feel bad that you’re going to be hiding the motor away underneath the fiberglass body.

1-21-13 7In order to explain the next really nice thing about this kit I have to go into a little more explanation about regular helicopters. If you already know this then please skip this picture. I’m going to assume that a lot of you who follow my blog know very little about this stuff (and I’m still learning). This is one of Jay’s other helicopters that he used to fly. I want you to notice that all of the mechanics are straight down below the rotorhead of the helicopter. The spindle that the blades spin on runs straight down into the rest of the mechanics. Okay? Does that make sense?

1-21-13 4This kit comes with a special frame for you to use so that the mechanics of the helicopter are actually offset back towards the tail of the helicopter. Normally, where you see that rounded part in the front of the doghouse (the ‘hat’ on the top of the helicopter’s body) the mechanics would come straight down from that. Which means that you would see everything that makes the blades turn when you looked in through the doors. With the mechanics being offset you have an empty cargo area where you would transport troops, medics, or supplies. This helps to make it look even more scale and real-to-life. I think that it’s a really neat detail!

1-21-13 2I had to laugh, though, at the pilots that the company tossed in with the kit. You can’t tell very well from this picture, but the pilots aren’t the same scale as the helicopter. When you place the pilots in the seats it looks like preteen kids dressed in military clothes pretending to fly. It’s actually quite hilarious. We’ll have to find some correctly scaled pilots for this.

1-21-13 1So, that’s the Huey that Jay is working on. There are some details that I’ve been able to help him with because he knew what he wanted, but not how to get there. I really can’t wait to see this fly. I’m not usually into helicopters, but this one is going to look great once it gets up in the air. I’ll keep you posted!

Finished Bookshelves!!!

Stained and Poly'd BookshelfThe last time I updated you on my bookshelves I believe that this is what I showed you. I finally managed to get all three stained and two coats of polyurethane tossed onto them. We waited until all three pieces were ready to be moved so that we would only have to open the basement doors once.

Library bookshelvesRemember, this is where they were going. This is our library where Jay’s espresso table sits. It’s where we like to sit with our coffee in the morning, or at dinner before Jay heads to work. It is a cozy room and I loved it. However, I love it even more with the bookshelves installed!

Shelves in Place!Aren’t they gorgeous!?!?! They almost didn’t make it upstairs! If Jay had made them even a quarter of an inch larger we wouldn’t have been able to get them out of the basement. We finally get two of them into the library and I’m a bit worried… it doesn’t look like we have enough room for the third shelf. Yikes! We had measured the length of the wall and we had 152″. When we had put the three pieces together in the basement they took up 149 1/2″ We knew that we wouldn’t have much room left, but we expected them to at least fit.

Finished ShelvesWe brought the third one up and I almost started to freak out. It wouldn’t fit! We were overlapping by about 3/4″! My mind started racing as I tried to figure out how we were going to make it fit without tearing one of them apart. Then it hit me, “Go get me a hammer and a flat screwdriver.” Jay found the tools and I went to town. I figured that the baseboard took up around 1″ of our space, so I took the short piece off of the wall. It took me a little bit of prying, but I managed to get it off. We were then able to slide the third piece into place. Yeah!!

Civil War BooksThe first books to go on there were my Civil War books. I have over 300 books on the Civil War, but you can’t tell. I was worried that they would take up more space than what they did. I was so happy when I finished putting them on there. I literally hugged the shelves. I’m serious. Jay witnessed it.

Civil War Books 2Don’t they look wonderful? I was so happy seeing them at this stage, but I couldn’t wait to get all of my books on there. I was still worried that not all of them would fit.

Full BookshelvesFINALLY FULL!!!! I have also added more of my Civil War stuff to the top of the shelves. Can you tell? You can’t see them, but I have a battle scene going on with the little plastic figures that I bought at the flea market. Complete with a reserve unit for the Union. lol

My Full BookshelvesI can’t even begin to tell you just how happy my bookshelves make me. I don’t think that Jay can really and truly comprehend the pure joy that erupts in me every time I look at them. I am the luckiest woman in the observable universe!

Travel Bug Has Been Biting

cemetery-hill-at-sunset.jpgHave you heard the call? Are the drums calling to you? Am I the only one who hears them? I’m surprised because they have been drumming louder and louder. It feels like forever since I’ve been to Gettysburg and I would love to go back. Soon. *sigh*

SEFF 2012 036SEFF 2013 is happening April 22-28th. I want to go so bad, but due to two weeks of shut down Jay doesn’t have the vacation time available. This time I would be able to fly, too, with Marino 13 (my new Kavalier that is in the process of being built). *sigh*

I have a mug from the Stonewall Jackson house that has his last words on it, “Let us cross over the river and rest beneath the shade of the trees.” He took his last breath at 3:15 pm on May 10, 1863. Lexington is a beautiful place and I would love to go back to revisit. *sigh*

There are so many other places that I would love to visit. And where am I? I’m sitting at work. For 10 hours a day. Wasting my time. Doing nothing productive. Not enjoying myself. Hating the fact that I’m here.

Okay, so a lot of this desire to change my locale stems from the fact that I’m unhappy with my job. My new boss has been here for ten months and I’m still doing a lot of her job because she is too busy talking on her iPhone to pay attention to what I’m trying to teach her. I have a coworker who can’t even write a stupid journal entry number down correctly! Journal entry numbers are all the same length so don’t you think you would notice if you wrote something down that was way too short?? Not if you’re an incompetent moron!

*sigh* The Priest said on Sunday that you can’t love God and hate your neighbor. I would love to argue that he doesn’t have to work with my boss and coworker. Otherwise he might have to reconsider his statement. Yes, I am looking for a different job but until I sell my other house, pay off my car and student loans then I can’t take a big pay cut. Unfortunately there aren’t many jobs that require my expertise in the area where I live. I wish that I could figure out how to do something that I love and get paid for it, too. Isn’t that everybody’s dream? I had applied with a local company to be an assistant candy maker, but apparently the company didn’t feel that my accounting experience qualified me for the job. What they don’t know is that I have a lot of candy making, baking, and cake decorating experience. Plus, I’m somewhat creative. After all, not everybody has an A-10 Thunderbolt on their wedding cake topper!

Oh well. I will find something when I’m supposed to. In the meantime I will just have to get through the day until I can get home to Jay.

God Bless the U.S.A.

The news lately has had me down. Between the 2nd Amendment being under fire and then the stories about flag-stomping in high school it’s just sad. Am I one of the few patriotic people left? I know that I’m not. I know that there are a LOT of people who feel the same way that I do about my country and my flag. I would like to share a couple of songs that always gives me chills and choke me up when I hear them.

The first one, and most favorite, is Lee Greenwoods, “God Bless the U.S.A.”

The second song that gives me goosebumps is by Johnny Cash “Ragged Old Flag”

The Kavalier Project

I usually like to give Jay something R/C related for Christmas, but with the wedding and house buying that was going on I just didn’t have the extra money or time to determine which new jet he wanted. I like to surprise him and keep him guessing, so I didn’t want to ask him directly. Instead, I decided to get him a gift certificate to the hobby shop so that he could at least get something there that he liked.

Last weekend, gift certificate in hand, he giddily ran up to the hobby shop. I’m sure that there were images of servos, receivers, or possibly motors running through his head. When he got home from his shopping trip (I’d had to go fight with the State Licensing bureau over the fact that it WAS my original birth certificate) I was surprised to find that he hadn’t used his gift certificate for anything that I had expected. Instead, he used it on me. My Sweetie bought me my second plane! (He says that the LT-25 is mine now, so that’s my first)

SIG Kavalier 1-6-13My very dearest bought a kit for a SIG Kavalier. This is a cousin to the SIG Kobra that Jay built last winter. He feels that the Kavalier will be a good second plane for me, and also it will give him something fun to build. He loves building planes from kits and it’s getting harder to find them. Most guys would prefer to buy an ARF (Almost Ready to Fly) where they might have to glue a few things together, possibly install the landing gear, put their electronics in it and then go fly. Very few guys build from scratch anymore. Jay loves to, and he’s really good at it, so he is building my plane for me.

Plane-in-a-box 1-6-13It’s still hard to believe that this box of balsa is going to become a big plane that I will be able to fly. It’s a plane-in-a-box!

Wing Skeletons 1-8-13I can keep tabs on this project much better now that I actually live with Jay and can take a peek at his progress every day. And guess what?! I found a skeleton in the workshop. Okay, that was pathetic, but these are the skeletons for the wings. The ability to remain in the sky rests on this pile of balsa and glue. Isn’t it amazing?

27 Inches per Wing 1-8-13To give you an idea of how big this plane is going to be I laid one of the wings up next to the giant ruler that Jay had sitting there. One wing by itself is 27″ long. That means that when you glue them together to create one giant wing it’s going to be twice as long!!

One Wing Skeleton 1-8-13It looks smaller here, doesn’t it? It’s still the same length, though. I double checked. 😉

I have to decide on the color scheme for this. I am seriously tempted to do it in Miami colors since it’s my plane. I might call it Marino 13 (after Dan Marino the most awesome Miami Dolphin EVER). Since the president can have Marine 1, I can have Marino 13. Right?

Jay has managed to do more work on these wings, but I haven’t had a chance to get anymore pictures. Life has been busy! The plane isn’t the only thing that Jay has been working on, though. After he was done building my bookshelves he decided that he needed some nice new shelves, too. Aren’t they pretty??!

Bookshelf Update

It has been a little bit since I last bragged about my beautiful bookshelves. In fact, I think this is how you last saw them:

12 Feet of ShelvesJay would laugh, but even just seeing this picture makes me so excited! I can’t wait to see them installed in the library and overflowing with my books. My biggest fear is that I will have too many books for this set of shelves and therefore will have to purge my collection a bit.

Two ShelvesHere are two of the three shelves. They are all assembled. Now it’s up to me to stain and poly them. We are waiting until all three are ready to house the books before we move them. There are two reasons for this: 1) There is no way that I will be able to keep myself from starting the process of organizing my books with one or two shelves in the library. Considering I have a TON of books this will be quite the process and would require me to completely empty every tote and box so that I can correctly shelve them. That’s a mess that I only want to deal with once. 2) Jay said that he’s only opening the basement door (our outside entrance) once. Because these shelves are so large there’s no way we will be able to move them upstairs using the inside stairs. They are too narrow and short. So we will have to take them outside and bring them back in through the kitchen.

Poly'd ShelfA lot of the hardwood in our house is kind of a golden oak, so I had wanted a stain that would compliment them. I know that my mom had to mix two or three different stains together to get the right color that she wanted when she did her trim. I figured that since these will be covered with books that the stain color wasn’t *too* important. I went with what I thought looked oak-ey. After I finished staining the first case, though, it almost looks more like Walnut than Oak. Oh well. They are going to hold my books and that’s all I care about.

Stained ShelfI did one coat of stain (I didn’t want it too dark) and then two coats of poly. It’s not in-your-face glossy, but that’s okay. Again, they are going to be full of books. I just need to be able to get the dust off of them once in a while.

Stained and Poly'd BookshelfIsn’t it gorgeous??!! I can’t wait until all three of them look like this. I’m working on the second shelf, but I don’t have a lot of time to get anything done. I’m hoping to finish the second shelf this weekend. Hopefully within a week and a half Jay and I can be moving these into the library. Yeah!!! This has to be one of the best Christmas gifts that I’ve ever received. I’m so spoiled!

Movie Review: Absolute Zero

The other night Jay and I decided to watch a movie. As I was pouring the wine, Jay went ahead and picked one on Netflix that we’d never seen. The result was Absolute Zero with a rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars on Netflix. That means somebody had to give it MORE than 2 stars to average out to the .5 star. I haven’t yet rated it on Netflix, but I would probably have to give it a 1.0. And that would be very generous on my part.

The story line, according to IMDb (which I had to read to make sure that I understood what the actual plot was supposed to be):

“INTER SCI climatologist David Koch has evidence that a shift in the Earth’s polarity triggered the last Ice Age…in a single day. Now, it’s happening again, and there’s no time to escape. As the temperature plummets, Miami is blasted with snow and ice. Evacuation routes are jammed. The only chance David, his old flame Bryn, and a few other hopeful survivors have is to hole themselves up in a special chamber at INTER SCI. A desperate race for survival is ignited as nature’s fury rages and the temperature plunges toward -459.67° F…ABSOLUTE ZERO! Written by Echo Bridge Home Entertainment  ”

This is our “hero” after he has landed in Antarctica. Everybody else walks around wearing giant coats, but not our strong hero. Nope! Just a fleece is all that he needs in this cold climate. Also, per what I saw on the movie, when you are outside talking to others you can’t see your breath! I will have to check with my friend’s husband (he has been there a few times for work) to see if there is something about the atmosphere that makes it impossible for your breath to be seen.

Have you ever watched Mystery Science Theater 3000 ? It’s a show where Joel (or later it was Mike) was forced to sit through really bad movies with two of his robot friends. Throughout the entire movie the guys at the bottom, as seen in this picture, make comments. They ad lib their own movie dialogue or make comments on what’s going on. For instance, I can’t recall the name of the movie they were watching on this episode, but during the ‘high speed’ chase on these altered golf carts one of the guys made the helmet comment. (Note to self… I have this episode on DVD… watch it with Jay).

Anyway, Absolute Zero would be a perfect candidate for MST3K! As it was, I was constantly making comments about this horrid piece of film. For instance, there’s a scene after the hero shows up in Anarctica where he’s talking to a friend, except they never look at each other. The old guy is up front and center with the hero standing behind him. They are catching up, yet not actually talking TO each other. And the hero makes the same face throughout the entire movie.

There’s the issue that “Science is never wrong,” as they say throughout the movie, and yet they got the science wrong! They claim that absolute zero is being caused by the shifting of the magnetic poles of the earth, and yet that’s now how climate works. The magnetic pull might affect the weather patterns, but it’s not going to instantly change the middle of the earth to suddenly freeze over.

When absolute zero is creeping up on them (and you can see it because the really horrible special effects shows a frosty cloud running over everything) somehow the people in this movie are safe in the hero’s work lab. I’m still not quite sure how the laws of science and nature don’t pertain to his lab, but they were safely ensconced there for a few minutes until a helicopter arrived to save them. Which brings up another question for me… I’m not very good at the whole science thing, but I thought that absolute zero means that absolutely nothing would be able to happen because this is the point where ALL molecular activity comes to a stop? So, if it’s absolute zero did the helicopter somehow have the same magic material that the lab had that would allow the helicopter to even function, let alone allow humans to continue to function? The hero should have used his science to make wet suits for ice fishermen out of the material his lab was made out of so that nobody ever would get hypothermia again.

This whole film was a rotten, stinky mess. I don’t even know what to tell you about next. How about the fact that the hero’s love interest married the hero’s best friend years ago (and the hero never knew because he was too self-absorbed to worry about his friends), then the best friend gets killed during the movie. I realize that there’s a lot going on, but when the opportunity presents itself, the wife doesn’t break down into tears over her husband’s demise (he was impaled by a palm tree… I told you, this movie was horrid). At the end of the movie when they are in the lab she’s practically cooing over the hero, and her husband has been dead for less than 6 hours!

Oh, and that’s another thing! Apparently this guy is so smart that he can tell you that they only had four hours and some odd minutes before absolute zero hit Miami. After he discovers this you get flashes of the clock counting down as they spend the rest of the movie trying to get back to the lab. They leave one room and they have an hour and thirty minutes left… next thing you know they have to go a different way to get to the lab and they only have twenty minutes before absolute zero arrives. They were only four floors away! This isn’t the Mall of America! It’s an office building in Miami. Even if they were on the top floor, it wouldn’t take over an hour to run that distance.

What confuses me is that with most disaster movies once the disaster hits there’s a lesson to be learned, or they have a new goal to attain. At the end of the movie Twister you knew that the next step was to learn more about these tornadoes thanks to the little doo-dads they had invented and put up into a tornado. What happens at the end of Absolute Zero? They wait to be rescued. That’s it. The whole movie is about them figuring out that it’s going to happen, and then they spend the second half trying to get to the lab so that they can hang out until they get rescued. That’s it. What happens next? You have no idea except that you’re pretty sure that the wife is not going to mourn for her husband long. Heck, the girl college student was more upset at her classmate falling to his death than the wife was about her husband being killed!!

Jay says that we need to watch more of these horrible movies. So, dear reader, it looks like you’ll have more blog posts to read about them in the future. Lucky you!

Happy New Year!

SupervisingHopefully you have fully recovered from your holiday hangover. As you can see, Chester is starting to come around, but she’s wondering whose pants she is laying on! I told her to be careful, that she couldn’t handle her licker, but nope… she just had to lick the Christmas tree skirt! Jay said that she must have licked the entire top because he saw her start on the bottom of it. *sigh* Silly cat!

Well, it’s been another year! There were lots of sad things that happened, but there were also a lot of very good things. I choose to concentrate on those instead of lamenting about the disappointments. You can’t change them so why worry or stress about them?

A lot of people make resolutions, but I don’t. Instead, I make intentions. This way they feel more like a To Do list that if I don’t accomplish all of them then at least I don’t feel like I’ve failed. After all, how many people actually keep their resolutions? Not many. Here are a few of my intentions for 2013:

1) Shower Jay with love and affection

2) Continue working on our home to make it feel more like ‘us’ and get a little more settled into our new life together

3) Become more involved in the Church, join some of the committees or participate in a few of the group things

4) Find a new job that is much closer to my new house and hopefully it will be a job that I can love. I miss loving my job. I miss liking my boss. *sigh*

5) Become a better housekeeper. I’m not that bad of one, but I could be better.

Anyway, those are some of the intentions that I have for this upcoming year. They will keep me busy, but they are projects that will be well worth the time spent on them.

What are some of your intentions for the new year?

Christmas Bookshelves

In my previous post I mentioned that Jay was building me bookshelves for Christmas. It has been my wish to have a library in my house where I could display all of my books at once. When you have over 300 books just on the Civil War, a lot of space is required in order to pull it off.

Library bookshelvesOur library has a giant wall without any heat vents or windows. It’s perfect for bookshelves! I believe that Jay measured it and we discovered that we have 152″ of wall space.

One BookshelfYeah for bookshelves!!!

This is Jay’s own design. They are roughly 4’x6′! This is one section. There will be three, total, next to each other against that wall. I can’t wait!

Jay in his workshopHere is my Sweetie, working hard to put the shelves together so that I can stain and polyurethane them.

Building the bookshelfThe second one is in progress. Almost done!

12 Feet of ShelvesThe three phases of shelf building. I can’t wait to get them stained and into the library! I am hoping that all of my books fit on there. If not, I guess that I will have to decide what stays and what goes. This was the best Christmas gift that Jay could have ever given to me. I can’t wait to see all of my books lined up on these shelves where I can see them every day. I’ve never seen all of my books out all at one time. It’s so exciting!!
