Trip to Atlanta – Centennial Olympic Park

Last week I went to Atlanta, GA with a good friend in order to watch the Atlanta Braves play a series of home games. My friend, Sarah, goes every May with her dad because the Braves are her favorite baseball team. She had asked me this past winter if I would go with her because her dad had just been diagnosed with Mesothelioma and more than likely wouldn’t be able to go on the trip. I agreed because I know how much she looks forward to attending the Braves games every year.

The only thing about the trip that I wasn’t looking forward to was the flight. Here I was almost 36 years old and I’d never flown on an airplane. Why? I prefer to drive because I feel like I’m in control of my own time table and schedule. Also, I can pack as much as I want without having to worry about suitcase constraints.

Ferris Wheel - Atlanta - May 2016One of the first things that we decided to do was to take a ride on the giant Ferris wheel near the CNN Center. Every time Sarah went to Atlanta she wanted to ride it, but her dad has a fear of heights and refused. I’m not a fan of heights, but I can handle Ferris wheels so I agreed to go with her.

Looking Across Centennial Park - 5-26-16Since Sarah knows the area pretty well (she’s been going to the Braves games in May since 1996) I didn’t do any research on where we were going or what was around there. I figured I would just follow her directions. Which is why I found myself crossing a giant park to head over to the Ferris wheel. The park looked a little sparse, but it was the middle of the week so I didn’t think anything of it.

Barricaded in Centennial Park - 5-26-16Until we got to the end of the path and found that it was barricaded. Nothing seemed to be going on so we weren’t sure why the barriers were up. Then we noticed that there were more people on the other side of these barricades.

More Barricades - Centennial Park - 5-26-16We looked over and saw that there were more barricades further down. We didn’t want to retrace our steps and walk all the way AROUND the park, so we followed the example of a couple in front of us; I moved a piece of the barricade enough for us to squeeze through and then put it back. It appeared that the area from which we had just come was blocked off for possible maintenance from the rest of the park. The only problem is that whoever had decided to block it off hadn’t blocked off all access points. Thus the reason why we were able to walk through part of it. It didn’t make sense as to why they did it like that, but they didn’t ask me so I guess that my opinion doesn’t matter.

Water Feature in Centennial Park - 5-26-16We continued through the area of the park where there were more people. I snapped this picture as we were walking by the water feature in this park. It was a nice little splash area for children to play in so that they could cool down. I was tempted to join!

Can you guess where we were? At this point I had no idea…

Centennial Park Sign - 5-26-16We were in Centennial Olympic Park! I hadn’t asked and Sarah hadn’t mentioned that we would be walking through it. To be fair, I had no idea that this park even existed. When the Olympics were in Atlanta I paid very little attention to them. If you’ve read my blog for any length of time you already know that I’m not much for sports or most activities that make you sweat.

Centennial Park Gates - 5-26-16

As parks go, it was very pretty. It is well maintained and clean. The most impressive thing, though, is the water feature. After our ride on the Ferris wheel we were walking back through the park and it happened to be when they have performances at the water feature thing. They play music and through the magic of technology the water dances to it. I was gawking at it as we walked by, so Sarah stopped in the shade while I watched the music dance to the William Tell Overture. It’s such a simple thing, but it suckered me in!

Ferris Wheel Flower Planter - 5-26-16When we finally made it over to the Ferris wheel there didn’t seem to be anybody about. We looked for posted hours, but there was nothing. They had the ticket price posted, but nothing about when the dumb thing was actually open! I wondered if this was a special ride where you had to receive a cordial invitation and when you arrived at the appointed time that’s when you could get a ride on it.

Ferris Wheel Flower Planter 2 - 5-26-16Luckily I am the owner of a smartphone (it’s old, but it works for what I need) so I was able to do some internet searching. Now, I’m not exactly Amish but I feel that it’s a bit ridiculous that it’s just assumed that everybody has up-to-date technology where you can instantly look up things you might want to know such as hours of operation. When did that become something that you don’t automatically post??

Up the Street from Centennial Park - 5-26-16We had a half hour until the wheel would start turning, so we strolled up the street to the CNN Center where the Braves official store resides. Again, why you would have a baseball store in the CNN Center, I have no idea. I will reiterate that nobody asked me, so my opinion doesn’t matter. After much perusing and a little shopping we headed back to the wheel. At this point we could see that it was actually turning.

Sarah on the Ferris Wheel - 5-26-16And we actually got on it! Sarah was so excited. She called her dad while we were on it to tell him all about it.

The cars were quite nice! They had air conditioning and very sturdy-feeling floors. There was some recording that I think told you what you were looking at, but we couldn’t hear it very well and I couldn’t get the volume to go up any higher. So I just randomly took pictures and Sarah told me what I was looking at once she got off the phone (her dad was doing better that day).

Centennial Park from the Ferris Wheel - 5-26-16We could see all of Centennial Olympic Park, including the barren section that you can see in the back where the barricades were placed.

Also, the college football hall of fame is in this picture, but I don’t watch college football so I didn’t really pay much attention to it.

Oh, and can you tell that the water feature in the middle is the five olympic rings?

Ferris Wheel - Pic 4 - 5-26-16Past the park is the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coke.

And tall buildings…

Oh, and at this intersection Sarah and I kept smelling horse poop yet there were no horses in sight. Why would you smell horse poop in the middle of the city? When we were leaving I saw one sign that said it was where you boarded the buggy to do a tour around town. At least we had an explanation!

The World of Coke from the Ferris Wheel - 5-26-16

Here is a slightly closer look at the World of Coke. The greenish square in the middle of the picture (right below the tall beige building) is an acrylic-looking structure at the World of Coke which has a Coke bottle in it.

It didn’t make any sense to me why they would display it like that, and I haven’t done any research, but I wanted to let you know just in case you wanted to know.

CNN Tower from the Ferris Wheel - 5-26-16To the right of Sarah’s shoulder is the CNN Center. We probably could have taken a tour, but they don’t like my kind around there. I do know, though, that they have the nastiest public restroom. It would rival some of the rest stop bathrooms that I’ve seen. It was icky and gross.

Ferris Wheel - Pic 3 - 5-26-16Here’s one more shot down the street. It looked like the parking lot down there had solar panels, but I wasn’t sure what they were hooked to. There weren’t any electric car chargers (that I could see) and all of the cars parked under it were the good ol’ gas-hogging kind.

Kerry on the Ferris Wheel - 5-26-16So that’s my Ferris wheel adventure in Atlanta. Not terribly exciting, I know, but it made for some interesting views. I have lots more pictures and stories from my trip so don’t worry… I’ll be back!

Dreams – Satanic Aunt

Yes, I was actually sleeping!

Yes, I was actually sleeping!

When I was growing up my family would tease me about how I always had to tell them about these dreams that I’d had. They were often quite vivid with a lot of detail involved. Somebody once told me that I should have them analyzed, but I’m not sure that I would want that! After all, some of them are quite out there.

One of my friends is always asking me if I’ve had any interesting dreams lately. It’s kind of weird to have somebody who actually wants to hear about them! So I thought that I would share one of my oddest dreams with you. I had this one last fall.

****************

Jay and I were traveling with my sister and two of our aunts (though they weren’t any of our actual aunts). I don’t know where we were going, but Jay and I ran into a gas station in a tiny town to use the bathroom. I was only partially done when I received a text from my sister telling me to hurry up because something was wrong.

We hurried over to the room we were renting, but it was actually an old store front with a full glass door. As Jay and I neared it we could see that it was all fogged up. Suddenly a hand hit it and left a bloody streak as it slid down. I opened up the door and found my sister with a cut hand and one of our aunts with a cut on her forehead.

Apparently I was a nurse so I started to help my sister. I noticed that the three of them were dressed in white dresses. The aunt who wasn’t cut was walking around, agitated and mumbling a lot of nonsensical stuff. Then she started saying how our parents had deserved to be killed because they refused to accept the dark lord. I suddenly realized that my aunt was satanic and she was confessing to killing my parents.

Before I could react she took out a gun, shot my sister and my other aunt, then threatened to kill me. I was trying to save my sister, but my aunt chased me away. So I went over to the sink and tried to wash the blood off of my hands, but they were stained. My aunt kept muttering nonsense about weird things and how I was going to enjoy worshipping Satan. I told her that I refused to do that and I would rather die. She promised to make that happen.

I went into the front room, sat on the floor with Jay (not sure what he was doing up to this point in time) and we prayed the Our Father over and over as we held each other. I figured that we were going to be killed, too.

My aunt screamed at us to shut up and then there was a gunshot. I stiffened, waiting to feel the pain, but I opened my eyes and realized that I wasn’t shot. Jay wasn’t either. My aunt had killed herself. Jay called 911 to report the murder-suicide and while he was on the phone I took a paper towel to get the gun away from my aunt. I was still afraid that she would suddenly sit up and use it on us.

Then I went over to my sister and realized that she was still alive. I yelled to Jay to have them send an ambulance. Then Jay told me that he had recorded the whole thing on my phone so that the cops would see exactly what had happened.

*******************

No, I have no idea what goes on in my head when I’m sleeping. Strange, isn’t it? I have dreams like this all of the time and try to remember to write them down. Perhaps I’ll share a few more in upcoming posts.

Summer Cross Update – 5-24-16

Summer Cross 5-16-16I had just finished the grapes on my Summer Cross a little over a week ago when I took this picture. I have managed to find a little more time to cross stitch lately…

Summer Cross 5-24-16I’ve managed to add a little more greenery and I’m working on the Black-Eyed Susan on the left-hand side. There are quite a few colors involved in this project, but the shades and accents they create really makes it all worth it.

On the N-Scale Incline…

N Scale Structures - Main Street Street View - 5-16-16Jay and I have been spending most of our time working on these buildings. Actually, Jay has been spending most of his time working on these buildings. I’ve had other things going on so I haven’t been able to get down there in over a week.

Train Layout - Farm Area - 5-7-16While painting buildings, though, Jay has been trying to figure out just how he wants his layout to look. He knows that he wants a yard with lots of side tracks and that there also has to be some kind of incline and raised track around the back.

Train Layout - Building the Incline 5-23-16Jay did all of the math to figure out how much room he would need to build the incline while allowing for the least amount of struggle for the length of trains that he wants to run. He then designed his support structure and cut it out of balsa using his CNC laser cutter. To make the radius he also used his CNC laser cutter to cut the black foam board that he had purchased for the bed of the incline.

Train Layout - Bench 1 5-23-16Here you can kind of see the gentle incline that he has put into place in Section 1 of the layout. He tested it to make sure that the trains would be able to climb the grade and so far, so good!

Train Layout - Back Rise 5-23-16The top of the incline is only 3″ tall, but that’s about all we have room for on this layout. That’s okay, though, because it at least gives a new dimension to the layout so that it won’t look so flat. Apparently we are going to make this into a bit of a hill or something. That ought to be interesting!

I Was In A Band…

Me at the piano

Piano Dork

Okay, so it was the high school band.

And I was a huge dork.

You can’t tell, but in this picture I’m wearing a piano watch. I loved it! I thought it was so neat!

High school memories were brought to the forefront last week when I returned to my alma mater in order to attend the last high school concert that the band director would give before he retires. In fact, he specifically requested my presence. Not that I feel like I made much of a difference. After all, he’s had a ton of students in and out of his band room in the last eighteen years since I graduated. Two very exuberant ex-students of his were in attendance and said a few words at the concert that night. So why would I make any kind of a difference?

Kerry's Select Choir

Select Choir – The Best of the Best

When I was in school I participated in every musical thing that I could, except for the actual musical that the school put on. I wasn’t part of the ‘In’ crowd and I wasn’t the choir director’s pet so I never really felt like I was one hundred percent part of the choir groups. Even though I was surrounded by classmates who I really didn’t care for, I loved music enough that I tolerated them.

Kerry's French Horn Section

First Chair French Horn

Band, though, was a different story. In the band room we were all friends. We teased each other mercilessly, but all in good fun.

How do you know that the stage is level? Drool is coming out both sides of the drummer’s mouths.

Why did the clarinet player put her instrument case on her car dashboard? So that she could park in the handicap spot.

Yes, the brass players had quite the egos… and I loved every single joke that poked fun at the woodwinds or percussionists.

All of my favorite memories from high school revolve around band or the brass quintet. I can’t hear “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” without thinking about my brass group performing it. Or how we changed song titles to things that made us laugh, such as “Have a Tequila” (Hava Nagila).

Brass Quintet

Brass Quintet

I was the only girl, but yet I was one of the guys. When we got together to play we were a close-knit group and nothing outside of the room mattered. It didn’t matter that I wasn’t an athlete or that I wasn’t one of the cool kids. What mattered was that I could play the French Horn fairly well and the five of us sounded really good together. If you’ve ever been part of an ensemble then you know the exhilaration of a piece when it FINALLY comes together perfectly.

Without my band director I wouldn’t have been part of any of it. He had only been teaching for a few years when I was finally old enough to start taking an instrument in school. I think that was around fourth grade. My best friend, Pauline, and I both wanted to take flute because we tried to do everything together. Well, I did my best, but it wasn’t any fun. I explained to the band director that I would have to give it up because every time I played I got dizzy. He had an idea… and placed a trumpet in my hands. Technically speaking it was a coronet, but for you non-instrumentalists out there it’s a trumpet. He correctly figured that I was using way too much air that would be better put to use on a brass instrument. So I played the trumpet for about half of the school year in fifth grade. That Spring he says to me, “What would you think about switching to the French horn?” I was really enjoying the trumpet, though, so I told him that if Ryan (the other trumpet player in my class) didn’t want to switch then I would. Well, Ryan didn’t, which was good because he was a really good trumpet player (he’s in the blue shirt). In fifth grade I switched to the French horn and never looked back.

The band director was a French horn player, too, so maybe that’s why he took a liking to me. I remember this one day, especially, when I was in eighth grade. I was sitting in my spot in the choir room when the adjoining door to the band room opened. It was the band director. He asked if I could come over there for a second. We hadn’t begun to do anything in choir so I put my music on my chair and joined him in the band room. I was confused because Pauline and my mom were standing in there. What was going on? He pointed to an open French horn case and said that it was brand new and just for me. It wasn’t mine to keep, but it was mine to use while I was in school (our school provided the instruments for us so they weren’t always in the best shape). I didn’t know what to say! He had purchased a shiny new French horn for me! It had such a beautiful tone, too.

I wasn’t ever really proficient with the French horn. To be honest, I didn’t practice like I was supposed to and there were just some things that I couldn’t ever get like double-tonguing (not what you think!). But I was good enough to be part of the group. In a school where my classmates harassed me and I never felt like I belonged, band was my oasis. It was the one place where I could excel and not be picked on because of it. Band was the one class where I felt like the teacher didn’t have any teacher’s pets and he saw us for who we really were, not who our parents were.

So, despite the fact that I have no desire to see anybody from my old high school, save for Pauline, I went back and watched the director’s last concert before retirement. I even teared up when giving him his last standing ovation. He is a good man and I wish him all of the happiness and best of luck in this next phase of his life.

Summer Cross Update – 5-16-16

Summer Cross 4-23-16It felt really good to know that I’ve halfway done with this project.

It also felt really good to know that I’ve managed to find some time to sit and cross stitch again.

There is something very therapeutic about making little ‘x’s on sparkly linen cloth.

Summer Cross 5-16-16The picture isn’t the best, but you can see the progress that I’ve made. I’ve added a leaf and a half on the right side of the orange flower, plus I’ve been going fruity with the strawberries on the left and the grapes in the middle. I won’t go off (yet again) on why I don’t feel that grapes belong in the SUMMER cross, but to each his own…

Hitting A Wall – Painting Bricks…

Train Layout - Bench 3 4-7-16Currently the all-consuming project in our house is the train layout.

Yes, it truly has become all-consuming. Jay is furiously building track and determining just how many miles he can possibly place on the plywood without making it look too ridiculous.

N Scale Structures - 5-3-16In the meantime, I’ve been reading every article and book that I can find on how to best model N-Scale scenery on train layouts. Not only am I concerning myself with scenery, but also finishing the itty-bitty buildings that need to go into the layout, too. N-Scale is a 1:160 ratio, so if I’ve done my calculation correctly a 6′ person will be just under 1/2″ in this scale.

N Scale Structures Kits 5-3-16That means TINY buildings with TINY details. A two-story building (figuring about 20′ tall) is about 1 1/2″ in this scale. Jay wants a small-town looking city space on the layout so he purchased a box of thirteen buildings to make up the main street.

The details are really great, but if you’re not an artist it’s kind of hard to get a realistic finish.

N Scale Structures - Brick Detailing Attempt 5-7-16We have been trying all different methods of getting the brick to look like actual brick with gray mortar. The books and YouTube videos make it look so easy!

N Scale Structures - Factory - 5-16-16This is the factory that I’ve been trying to do the dry-brushing technique on it for the brick. *sigh* I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but it just doesn’t look right to me.

N Scale Structures - Back of Hotel - 5-16-16Then I tried a different technique on the hotel, which you can see the back of it here. I painted everything the brick color. Once that was dry I dusted it with the dust from artists’ pastels to fill in the mortar.

I think that I just made a dirty-looking building.

N Scale Structures - Hotel - 5-16-16This is the front of the hotel. I hoped that maybe if I painted the rest of the details that it would make it look a little better.

I’m not done painting the itty-bitty details, though. I think that the brush I’m using is so tiny that it only has about three bristles on it and at times that feels like it’s too big!

N Scale Structures - Main Street - 5-16-16We are doing the best that we can and learning as we go. The good thing is that as we continue building (which will take a number of years to really build this correctly), we will continue to improve our skills. We can always change out buildings at a later date. Jay wanted to get the buildings assembled, though, so that he could get an idea of where the track will go for good.

N Scale Structures - Main Street Street View - 5-16-16In the meantime I’ll continue refining my painting skills. I never did very well in art class when I was in school. I tried drawing a tiger lily and it ended up looking like an orange banana peel. I have problems drawing stick figures! I even have difficulties painting walls in the house… more paint ends up on me than on the walls!

I think that this will be an exercise in perseverance….

“Train”-ing in the Basement

Jay's PlanesEverybody who regularly reads my blog should be well aware of the fact that Jay is big time into airplanes, and especially flying his RC airplanes. He has filled the basement and his workshop with assembled, half-assembled, kits, and pieces of RC airplanes.

Last summer, though, I noticed that he was losing steam with the airplanes. He spent way more time playing with the CNC Router and his 3D printer. Due to some other circumstances beyond our control at the moment, his desire to fly the RC planes has dropped even lower. I understand as my hobbies go through periods of highs and lows, too. I go hot-and-heavy with cross stitching for a while, and then that is put aside in favor of sewing, then the weather improves and I find myself playing in the dirt more than sewing.

Chester Helping with the Train TableLately Jay has started to play with his model trains more. He has always wanted to have a large layout where he can have multiple trains running all at one time.

Train Layout Stage 1 3-31-16Airplanes were moved around and lumber was purchased. Jay decided that he wanted to build the train layout in half of the space at the end of the basement.

Train Layout - Bench 1 3-31-16He started with 2×4’s and plywood.

From what I can tell in the magazines (yes, I’ve read them and now subscribe to one of them for Jay) the majority of the railroad modelers will pick a specific railroad and then model a portion of that track.

Jay doesn’t want to do this. He just wants to build a generic layout for his trains to run on.

Train Layout - Bench 3 4-4-16So we have what I refer to as Bench 3, which is where the city will be located.

And yes, these jets will remain where they are for the time being.

Train Layout - Bench 2 4-6-16In the middle we have where the yard will be going, or so I’m told.

Train Layout - Bench 1 4-4-16Then Bench 1 will hold the rural section of the tracks.

I think that in our rural setting we will have a beef farm. That way I don’t have to figure out how to make N-Scale fields with crops growing in them. I just have to create a pasture and find some N-Scale cattle.

Train Layout - Bench 1 4-6-16When Jay really started to build this layout he was working 2nd shift. I would wait until he got home from work to talk with him for a little bit and then I would go to bed. When I woke up in the morning I would go downstairs to see how much more he got done. Then when I got home from work I would take another walk down there to see what else he had worked on before having to leave the house. Let me show you how busy he was…

Day 1….

Train Layout - Bench 1 4-7-16Day 2….

Train Layout - Bench 1 4-14-16Day 3.

I would go to sleep at night with the sound of the trains running around these tracks because this area of the basement is right under our bedroom.

Thank goodness he doesn’t have any engines that can blow their whistle!

Train Layout - Bench 3 4-6-16As soon as the last piece of track was installed for the outside loop he got out some cars and two engines to get the train going.

Train Layout - Bench 3 4-7-16Then he added a switch with some sidings… or whatever they are called.

All I know is every time I looked I think there was another section of track added.

Train Layout - Inside Loop - 4-14-16And more loops placed in the layout…

I thought that was bad until I got home and discovered this…

N Scale Train - CarsPerhaps that pile doesn’t look very big, but all of those boxes are for box cars. One per box. When I saw that pile it looked like there was at least 100 boxes there. Of course, I think that you can see about half of his inventory on the tracks in this picture.

Train Layout - Yard - 4-7-16He gets one train going on the outer loop in one direction, and another going on the inner loop in the opposite direction and he just watches them. Like fish in an aquarium.

Train Layout - Yard - 5-7-16He has changed the layout a few times, but I think that we’re getting close to what will finally make him happy.

Then we get to start on the scenery. He has called his Finishing department in for help on that. Yikes! I can slop some stain on wood and poly it, but I don’t think that I’m very good at this scenery stuff. It should be quite the learning curve!

Dresses for Missions Update 5-8-16

Singer 301A CoverMy poor sewing machine! It has been so neglected that I think it probably feels like it’s been forgotten. It really hasn’t! I just haven’t had time to get up here and do some sewing.

Although, I did make a little bit of time for it a few weekends ago.

Dress #30 4-24-16Dress #30 – 4-24-16

I actually purchased this material last summer, but I’ve just now finally had a chance to do something with it. This is material that I managed to get at Wal-Mart for $1/yard! I bought all that was left on the bolt… 10 yards!

I’d been dreaming about using it as I wanted to see just how cute it would turn out. The great thing is that I didn’t add any embellishments to it. I thought that it was busy enough without adding more to it. I made this one big enough that it should fit an older girl in her teens. I’ve been told that they could use more in that size. Ask and you shall receive! Hopefully I can get more sewn before too long.

Fleece Blankets for Charity – 4-24-16

Fleece Ready for BlanketsIn a previous post I had mentioned that I wanted to continue crocheting, but I had decided that I would make slightly more useful things like blankets for the babies where our Dresses for Missions are sent.

First Fleece Blanket Attempt - 4-8-16My first attempt would be using this robot printed fleece that I had found for a great price at Hobby Lobby. I had then picked up some really bright green yarn that I thought went nicely with the greens in the material.

Fleece Blanket #1 4-16-16And here it is! Blanket #1.

I found a blocky border that I liked since the robots are so square and blocky. The problem was that I had to do some extra stitches around the corners, which the pattern didn’t mention, but I didn’t do enough stitches on the corners. Thus, they cup. It was my first try, though, and other than that I think it turned out pretty good.

Fleece Blanket #2 4-24-16Blanket #2

This was another good deal that I scored at Hobby Lobby. I love variegated threads so when I came across a bright variegated skein that really went well with most of the colors on this material I snatched it up. I wanted to try a lacier border on this one. Due to the natural ruffle that is created when this border is stitched I didn’t have to worry about the corners. I’ll be using that pattern again!

Rotary Cutter Blade for Crocheted EdgingsI used this blade to make the holes in the edge of my fleece and it has worked wonderfully! I was a bit unsure at first because my mom had mentioned that she had tried one and didn’t like it at all. When using this I just made sure to keep about 1/2″ away from the edge of the material. Also, on another blog a lady had mentioned that you should place a pin at your starting spot so you know when you’re coming up to it. What a great idea! I have been lucky in that so far the first two blankets I’ve done I’ve managed to end in the same hole where I started. Just take your time, go slowly, and when you have to move your material place your blade in the very last hole that you made so that you can continue to evenly space the base stitches you will make around the blanket.
